Identity test is a hypothesis test defined over the class of stationary and ergodic sources,to decide whether a sequence of random variables has originated from a known source or from an unknown source. For an identity test proposed by Ryabko and Astola in 2005, that makes use of an arbitrary pointwise universal compression algorithm and π, the null distribution to define the critical region, we have studied the rate at which type-2 error goes to zero as sample size goes to infinity. A formal link is established between this rate and the redundancy rate of the compression algorithm in use for the class of Markov processes by an application of the method of types.

Recent processors utilize a variety of parallel processing technologies to boost its performance, and thus it is required that multimedia applications can be efficiently parallelized and can be easily implemented on such a processor with parallel processing features. We implemented parallel algorithms for VQ compression on a shared-memory parallel environment and evaluated the effectivess of the parallel algorithms. On such a system, we evaluate two parallel algorithms for the codebook generation of the VQ compression: parallel LBG and parallel tPNN and find that the parallel tPNN is superior in terms of space complexity, whereas the parallel LBG is superior in terms of time complexity and parallelism. On the other hand, for a codeword search, the p-dist approach and the c-dist approach with the aggregation of synchronizations are suitable for a small codebook, and the c-dist approach and the p-dist approach with the ADM or the strip-mining method are suitable for a large codebook. However, since the aggregation of synchronizations and the strip-mining method increases the space complexity of the algorithm, the p-dist approach and the c-dist approach are more suitable for a small codebook and for a large codebook, respectively

This paper presents a study of transforms method used in lossless text compression in order to preprocess the text by exploiting the inner redundancy of the source file. The transform methods are derived from the Star (*) Transform. LIPT, ILPT, NIT, and LIT applied to text files emphasize their positive effects on a set of test files picked up from the classical corpora of both English and Romanian texts. Experimental results and comparisons with universal lossless compressors were performed, and set of interesting conclusions and recommendations are driven on their basis.

In this paper we propose an efficient approach to the compressed string matching problem on Huffman encoded texts, based on the BOYER-MOORE strategy. Once a candidate valid shift has been located, a subsequent verification phase checks whether the shift is codeword aligned by taking advantage of the skeleton tree data structure. Our approach leads to algorithms with a suhlinear behavior on the average, as shown by extensive experimentation.

In this article, a new algorithm-NABBHM based on HVS masking effect to assess blocking artifacts without reference is presented. We consider the brightness and complexity masking effect through defining two factors of masking to revise the original blocking artifacts value to make it more consistent with the human visual. Experiments show that NABBHM has strong feasibility and is highly fitting the subjective assessment value. ©2009 IEEE.

Header compression techniques can improve the speech quality of VoIP applications. However, its deployment over wireless mesh environments may not offer much improvement, since the wireless and multi-hop characteristics of such a network impose a high packet loss rate. In this work, we propose a new approach for header compression, using packet aggregation to cooperate with the header compression scheme. Simulation results show that the new cooperative approach can decrease significantly the packet loss, impacting positively on the speech quality.

Data compression algorithms are used to reduce the redundancy and storage requirement for data. Data compression is also an efficient approach to reduce communication costs by using available bandwidth effectively. Over the last decade we have seen an unprecedented explosion in the amount of digital data transmitted via the Internet in the form of text, images, video, sound, computer programs, etc. If this trend expected to continue, then it will be necessary to develop a compression algorithm that can most effectively use available network bandwidth by compressing the data at maximum level. Along with this it will also important to consider the security aspects of the compressed data transmitting over Internet, as most of the text data transmitted over the Internet is very much vulnerable to an attack. So, we are presenting an intelligent, reversible transformation technique that can be applied to source text that improve algorithm ability to compress and also offer a sufficient level of security to the transmitted data.

This paper applied the Methods which based on GEP in compress multi-streams. The contributions of this paper include: 1) giving an introduction to data function finding based on GEP(DFF-GEP), defining the main conception of Multi-Streams, and revealing the map relation in it; 2) putting forward the compression Algorithm for Multi-Streams according to map relation lied in data between data streams; and 3)providing an experience with the real data and find that (3.1) the compression ratio of the new methods is 120~150 times as the traditional wavelets method, and 35~70 times as the wavelets and coincidence method; (3.2) the relative error of the new method is about 3%, yet maximum relative error is 0.01 by using the traditional relative error standard, the precision is improved from 7% to 15% as compared with the traditional method.

We present a lightweight lossless compression algorithm for realtime sensor networks. Our proposed adaptive linear filtering compression (ALFC) algorithm performs predictive compression, using adaptive linear filtering to predict sample values followed by entropy coding of prediction residuals, encoding a variable number of samples into fixed-length packets. Adaptive prediction eliminates the need to determine prediction coefficients a priori and, more importantly, allows compression to dynamically adjust to a changing source. The algorithm requires only integer arithmetic operations and thus is compatible with sensor platforms that do not support floating-point operations. Significant robustness to packets losses is provided by including small but sufficient overhead data to allow samples in each packet to be independently decoded. Real-world evaluations on seismic data from a wireless sensor network testbed show that ALFC provides more effective compression and uses less resources than some other lossless compression approaches such as S-LZW. Experiments in a multi-hop sensor network also show that ALFC can significantly improve raw data throughput and energy efficiency.

The proliferation of malware has been causing great harm to computer and information systems. Traditional signature-based approaches fail to detect obfuscated malware and unknown malware. We present a preliminary study on classifying with compression of program instructions for malware detection. The code structure information was utilized to compress. The disassembled code is converted to its intermediate representation. We extract the opcode to form the stream for prediction by partial matching (PPM). The binaries are classified with this statistical compression algorithm. The preliminary experiment shows that our method can efficiently detect malware with high accuracy and low false positive rate.
