This paper examines the opportunity of using compression for accelerating the (re)configuration of FPGA devices, focusing on the choice of compression algorithms, and their hardware implementation cost. As our purpose is the acceleration of the configuration process, estimating the decoder speed also plays a major role in our study. We evaluate a wide range of well-established compression algorithms and we also propose two methods specifically developed for compressing FPGA configuration bitstreams, one based on a static dictionary and the other on arithmetic coding. For the arithmetic coding we propose a statistical model that takes advantage of the particularities of the configuration bitstreams of the Virtex 4 FPGA family. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed methods along with state of the art compression algorithms on a number of benchmark circuits, some selected from the available open source implementations and some synthetically generated. Our evaluations indicate that using modest resources we can achieve parity and even exceed comercial software in terms of compression ratio, and outperform all other traditional algorithms. All our implemented decompressors are shown to use less than 1.5% of the slices available on the FPGA device.

In this paper we present the MyMultimediaWorld Internet- based platform relying on the MPEG-4 standard and designed to benchmark 3D compression algorithms. We implemented an easy-to-use API designed to make the integration of the 3D compression algorithm of third-party researchers agnostic to and independent of the global system complexity. Benchmarking results are automatically updated accordingly and presented quantitatively by displaying the 3D compression performance fields.

This paper presents a practical and effective image compression system based on wavelet decomposition and contrast sensitive-SVR (support vector regression) for compressing still images. The kernel function in an SVR plays the central role of implicitly mapping the input vector (through an inner product) into a high-dimensional feature space. We study the different wavelet kernel for image compression application. Image quality is measured objectively, using peak signal-to-noise ratio, and subjectively, using perceived image quality. The effects of different wavelet kernels, image contents and compression ratios are assessed. A comparison with JPEG, SPIHT compression system is given. Our results provide a good reference to choose a suitable kernel for image compression application.

In this paper, lifting scheme is adopted for aerial image compression and modified CDF97 (MCDF97) wavelet is put forward as wavelet kernel. MCDF97 lifting algorithm improves defect that five lifting coefficients of CDF97 wavelet are all irrational numbers. The compression performance of MCDF97 wavelet is almost the same as that of the CDF97 wavelet, but the algorithm based on MCDF97 wavelet reduces operation memory, decreases complexity and accelerates the processing speed. After wavelet transform of aerial images, set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) coding is adopted to quantize and code the wavelet coefficients. Experimental results indicate that this compression algorithm greatly improves compression efficiency of aerial images, and meets the requirement of aerial compression system for storage, operation time and hardware implement.

The rapid growth of Universal Remote Controls, Interactive Remote Controls, electronics Products and Infra-red (IR) Database business has increased the need for effective and standardized IR Database compression techniques. In order to support a large number of Remote control models in a Universal remote, one must compress the available IR database as best as possible. This paper presents a new algorithm for representing optimized key-masks for model command sets. This technique changes the normal key mask into reduced key masks depending on the correlation between the Remote Control keys. In the normal key mask a unique flag represents each remote button/key. In this new technique, all the related buttons/keys can be combined together so that a single flag can represent these set of keys and thus leading to optimized and compressed IR database.

One of the main concerns of the wide use of video surveillance is the loss of individual privacy. Individuals who are not suspects need not be identified on camera recordings. Mechanisms that protect the identity while ensuring legitimate security needs are necessary. Selectively encrypting objects that reveal identity (e.g., faces or vehicle tags) is necessary to preserve individualspsila right to privacy. This paper presents a compression algorithm independent solution that provides privacy in video surveillance applications. The proposed approach is based on the use of permutation based encryption to hide identity revealing features. The permutation based encryption tolerates lossy compression and allows decryption at a later time. The use of permutation based encryption makes the proposed solution independent of the compression algorithms used. The paper presents the performance of the system when using H.264 video encoding.

The paper presents a new text transform algorithm suitable for embedding in compression algorithms. The strategy the new algorithm employed to increase performance of text compression is to replace words with predefined codes. Instead of using a huge dictionary containing exhaustive words as in previous works, the new algorithm uses a list of stoplists and/or frequent words. The research devised different encoding schemes for such a list. It then made experiments of using these schemes with different compression algorithms on standard texts. The result shows that each scheme gives increasing compression when using with specific compression algorithms.

A new lossy compression algorithm for RF ultrasound signals (A-scan) is presented, which stores only the largest variations of the original signal. The largest variation (LAVA) algorithm is a two-step, constant bit-rate (CBR) algorithm, using only simple addition/subtraction operations, which is very suitable for FPGA implementation. The algorithm is targeted for automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) systems where a significant data reduction has been obtained while preserving the important characteristics of the signal. Comparison to other existing compression techniques is provided using the PSNR metric.

The burrows-wheeler transform (BWT) is a combinatorial algorithm originally created for text compression such as bzip2, and that has been recently applied to image compression field. This paper focuses on the impact of compression scheme based on the combinatorial transform on high-level resolution medical images. It overviews the original scheme and some improvements that have been develop in post processing of BWT in this context. The performances of these techniques are compared and discussed. Moreover, considerations on the imagepsilas sizes and data formats are also considered.

This paper proposes an improved lossless compression algorithm based on the spatial-spectral hybrid *** choose the prediction modes between the spatial and the spectral domains by computing the local correlation *** such coefficient is larger than the pre-designed threshold,the spectral linear predictor is adopted,which is able to capture more spectral correlation by re-estimating the ***,MED predictor is ***,prediction error images are coded by RICE *** are carried out on AVIRIS *** results show that the proposed method outperforms 3D-CALIC algorithm,MED and GAP spatial lossless prediction algorithms.
