Renewable energies are deployed worldwide to mitigate climate change and push power systems towards sustainability. Nevertheless, the weather-dependent nature and variability of renewable energy sources often hinders their integration to national grids. The combination of different sources to profit from their beneficial complementarity has often been proposed as a partial solution to overcome these issues. This paper introduces a novel method for quantifying total temporal energetic complementarity between three different variable renewable sources, based on well-known mathematical techniques: correlation coefficients and compromise programming. It has the major advantage of allowing the simultaneous assessment of partial and total complementarity, as well as allowing for a linear assessment of complementarity. The method is employed to study the complementarity of wind, solar and hydropower generation on different temporal scales in a region of Poland. Results show that timescale selection has a determinant impact on the estimated value of the total temporal complementarity index. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A composite indicator to measure sustainable water use in Portugal: A compromise programming approach

Clean water is an important resource for maintaining human life, economic activities, and ecosystems' survival. Nevertheless, its irregular distribution and occasional scarcity lead to the need to promote its sustainable use. To assess the current situation and the dynamics of sustainable water use, it is crucial to identify the main factors affecting it and to propose monitoring indicators. This paper develops an approach based on compromise programming to analyse water use sustainability at the municipal level, with a methodology that comprise a framework designed in five steps: 1 - indicators' choice;2 - indicators's weights;3 - definition of sustainability rankings with the application of a compromise programming approach;4-application of a GIS analysis;5 - identification of the main factors affecting sustainable water use. As a first result, the consensus weights of the chosen indicators were defined, indicating that the most important internal factors affecting sustainable water use are safe water, the percentage of housing served by water supply and water distributed by inhabitant. Then sustainability rankings at the municipality level were defined considering these factors. Finally, it was possible to conclude that tourism activity, income level, and young age population have a significant negative effect on sustainable water use, and municipal revenue has a positive effect. Irrigated farming shows a non-significant negative effect on sustainable water use. Population density, elderly population and education level did not show the expected effects on sustainable water use.

The pollution of fossil fuels uses and low efficiency performance of energy systems are the main issues which threaten the environment and cause extra cost. Many solutions are presented and the one which is performed in this study is using energy hub which is composed of several parts. Sub energy hub and combined cooling, heating and power combining with the renewable energies such as wind turbine and photovoltaic are the component parts of this novel energy hub. The optimum flow of energy plus using energy storage devices brings coordination and reliability to the system. The model proposed is multi-objective and the goal is to investigate the effects of accomplishment real-time based demand response program in reducing operation cost and CO2 emission. The mathematical methods like compromise programming and fuzzy approach are implemented to gain the Pareto solutions and obtain trade-off between economic and environmental performances. Two cases which are investigated in this paper are without and with demand response program. The linear model with mixed-integer programming is implemented in general algebraic modeling system to solve the proposed model. The comparison results illustrate that the operation cost and CO2 emission is decreased 4.05% and 1.52% respectively due to demand response program. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A compromise programming Application to Support Forest Industrial Plantation Decision-Makers

The conflicts that arise between natural resources consumption and the desire to preserve them make the multicriteria decision theory necessary. Brazil, one of the 10 largest timber producers globally, uses optimization models that represent the growth of forests integrated with decision support systems. Brazilian forest plantation managers often face conflicts when continuously seeking efficiency gains (higher productivity at lower costs) and efficacy (higher profits with minimum social and environmental impacts). Managers of leading producing countries on timber, pulp, and fiberboard constantly interact to fine-tune industry processing demands vis-a-vis the demands of highly productive fast-growing forest plantations. The decision process in such cases seeks a compromise that accommodates short-term industry productivity optimization and long-term forestry production capacity. This paper aims to apply a forest management decision support system (FMDSS) to a case study that represents the challenges that industrial plantations in Brazil usually face. A vertically integrated pulp company situation was simulated to provide a real scenario. In this scenario, forest managers tend to shorten the rotations due to Brazil's usually high-interest rates;meanwhile, industrial managers tend to ask for longer ones due to the positive correlation between age and wood density. Romero(R), a Forest Management Decision Support System, developed by following the multi-criteria decision theory, was used to process the case study. Expressly, the hypothesis that mill managers initially have, that older ages rotation could improve mill production, was not confirmed. Moreover, mill managers lean towards changes in the short term, while the case study shows that changes in rotation size and genetic material take time, and decisions have to be made involving both interests: forest and mill managers.

Development of ecological indicators—a methodological framework using compromise programming

Ecological assessments often rely on indicators to evaluate environmental conditions. An ecological indicator integrates discrete pieces of information representing condition of resources, magnitude of stresses, exposure of biological components to stress and related impacts and consequences. This paper describes our efforts to develop an ecological indicator based on information routinely collected during irrigation systems operation from projects in Greece. compromise programming is used for the development of ecological indicators. The indicators can be used for decision making in order to evaluate different irrigation policies for irrigation water management when the water is limited. The results of the alternative policies are compared and conclusions for the application of the methodology are drawn. The study indicated that ecological indicators could be incorporated to select alternatives concerning water delivery. Conclusively, the methodology can be incorporated in ecological assessment and program studies.

A compromise programming approach for cross efficiency measurement in basic two-stage network system

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a technique that allows each decision-making unit (DMU) to calculate efficiency using the most favorable weights for inputs and outputs. The resulting efficiency scores are incomparable and difficult to discriminate. Cross-efficiency is a concept for solving the problem of incomparability among the efficiencies of a set of DMUs that are calculated from different weights and is helpful for ranking. In basic DEA, several cross-efficiency evaluation methods with various secondary purposes have been presented, however, the internal mechanism of the DMUs in cross-efficiency evaluation is often neglected. In this study, we use the composition approach for a basic two-stage structure, so that the efficiencies of the divisions are estimated first, and then the overall efficiency of the system is obtained. To solve the linear bi-objective model in the combination approach, we consider a compromise programming problem to find the solution that is as close as possible to the ideal point. Finally, a secondary objective model is proposed to select a weight among the optimal weights of the compromise model, which also guarantees the efficiency of the optimal weight for the bi-objective problem. We use the optimal solution obtained from this model to evaluate cross-efficiency and rank DMUs for a series two-stage system. The proposed approach enables us to rank the DMUs by assessing the performance of each DMU and each of its separate divisions. The validity of the suggested network cross-efficiency evaluation is demonstrated by a numerical example from the literature.

Nowadays, utility theory and compromise programming (CP) are considered very different paradigms and methodologies to measure preferences as well as to determine decision maker's optima on an efficient frontier. In this paper, however, we show that a utility function with separate variables (presented in the form of a Taylor series around the ideal point) is reducible to a weighted sum of CP distances. This linkage between utility and compromise (based on a main assumption in which the usual utility functions hold) leads to (i) a method for specification and optimization of usual utility functions by operational technique and (ii) a reformulation of standard CP with the advantage of determining the best CP solution from a utility perspective. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This study determines the suitable general circulation models (GCMs) for the prediction of future precipitation of Upper Godavari sub-basin, India. Five performance indicators (PIs) namely correlation coefficient (CC), normalized root mean square deviation (NRMSD), absolute normalized mean biased deviation (ANMBD), skill score (SS), Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and three different combinations (Case 1: all performance indicators, Case 2: CC, SS and ANMBD, and Case 3: CC, SS, and NRMSD) were considered to evaluate the performance of 38 GCM models for the study area. The observed precipitation data for 12 grid points covering the Upper Godavari sub-basin along with eight districts of Maharashtra were used for the selection of the suitable GCMs. The weights of the indicators were determined by the entropy method. compromise programming (CP) and the technique for order preference to the similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) methods were used for ranking the GCMs. The group decision-making approach was employed to make a collective decision about the rank of 38 GCMS considering all the grid points. In view of all the three combinations of PIs, the study suggests that the effect of the performance indicator NSE on the ranking of GCM models is the most significant (weights for the grid points varying in the range 22.75%–78%) followed by ANMBD, CC, NRMSD, and SS. Including the maximum number of PIs and considering their combinations is found to be much helpful to enhance the credibility of the ranking of GCMs. From the group decision-making approach, it was observed that the ensemble of MPI-ESM-P, CNRM-CM5-2, and CNRM-CM5 is suitable for the prediction of precipitation for the study area.

he university course timetabling is a tactical level problem that almost all academic departments encounterbefore each semester. Nowadays, in order to meet some standards, set by educational accreditation agencieswithin the scope of higher education quality assurance, it is required to generate efficient course timetables,which ensure optimal distribution of basic capabilities. Actually, these capabilities should be first specifiedbased on the learning outcomes defined by lecturers for each course that are also associated with programoutcomes and are aimed to be acquired by all of the students. Based on this motivation, a multi-objective mixed-integer non-linear programming model is developed for a novel capability-based course timetabling problem. Its validity and practicality are tested on a real-life application in an Industrial EngineeringDepartment. When the balanced solutions provided by compromise and fuzzy goal programming techniqueswere compared with the existing schedules of the previous years, it was revealed that significantimprovements could be achieved in terms of several conflicting objectives (i.e., optimal capabilitydistribution over the timetable, acquisition of maximum number/variety of different capabilities by thestudents, meeting expectations of lecturers by minimizing total temporal difference between the periodshis/her courses are assigned, total penalty cost related to soft constraints).
