Modeling, simulation and design of a portable wastewater treatment plant: A new mechanistic dependent sedimentation model and computational algorithm

The integration of various industrial wastewater treatment processes into a compact and efficient system aimed at reducing space and operational costs is economical for environmental stakeholders in this domain. This research focuses on the development of a kinetic-dependent sedimentation model and a simulation framework to enhance the efficiency of treating industrial wastewater in compact systems. The study used experimentally determined operating conditions, wastewater characteristics, and sludge concentration as parameters to study reaction rates and hydrodynamics for optimizing the dimensions of the treatment plant. The impact of varying reaction conversion on the performance indicators of the flocculation mix tank and clarifier basin was investigated at varying detention periods of 1.5-3 h, temperatures of 20-30 degrees C. The results showed that mechanistic and water parameters have a significant effect on the sludge hydrodynamics of the sedimentation model. The optimization statistics established a high correlation between reaction conversions, mixing power dissipation, and functional dimensions (radii and depths inclusive) of the flocculation mix tank and clarifier basin to 0.9490 < R-2 >= 0.9630 at a 95 % confidence interval. An increase in the reaction conversion (X-A < 0.9) was significant on the performance of the flocculation mix tank and clarifier basin to guarantee biodegradation of organics, colour removal, and the total solids to settle with 90 % efficiency in concentric circular tanks. The optimized design geometry satisfied the design criterion: surface overflow rate < settling velocity, clarifier radius > radius of the flocculation mix tank to allow coagulation-flocculation aided sedimentation treatment to satisfy effluent discharge.

Numerical modeling of partial integrodifferential equations of fractional order shows interesting properties in various aspects of science, which means increased attention to fractional calculus. This paper is concerned with a feasible and accurate technique for obtaining numerical solutions for a class of partial integrodifferential equations of fractional order in Hilbert space within appropriate kernel functions. The algorithm relies on the reproducing kernel Hilbert space method that provides the solutions in rapidly convergent series representations for the reproducing kernel based upon the Fourier coefficients of orthogonalization process. The Caputo fractional derivatives are introduced to address these issues. Moreover, the error estimate of the generated solutions is established as well as the convergence of the iterative method is investigated under some theoretical assumptions. The superiority and applicability of the present technique is illustrated by handling linear and nonlinear numerical examples. The outcomes obtained are compared with exact solutions and existing methods to confirm the effectiveness of the reproducing kernel method. (c) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this paper, let the backorder rate be a control variable to widen applications of Wu and Tsai's model [J.W. Wu, H.Y. Tsai, Mixture inventory model with back orders and lost sales for variable lead time demand with the mixtures of normal distribution, International Journal of Systems Science 32 (2001) 259-268.]. And, we also assume that the backorder rate is dependent on the length of lead time through the amount of shortages. In addition, we assume that the lead time demand follows a mixture of normal distributions, and then we relax the assumption about the form of the mixture of distributions for the lead time demand and apply the minimax distribution free procedure to solve the problem. Further, instead of having a stock-out term in the objective function, a service level constraint is added to the models. Finally, we develop two computational algorithms to find the optimal order quantity and the optimal lead time. Furthermore, two numerical examples are also given to illustrate the results. In this paper, we suggest a least absolute deviation (LAD) method for the determination of the number of upper or lower outliers in normal sample by minimizing its sample mean absolute deviation. In consequence of computation of the criterion for LAD method need to use iterative numerical analysis, we also give a computational algorithm of LAD method to find the number of upper or lower outliers in normal sample. The computational algorithm and tire Prep-LEAR program have been performed on the basis of the LEA model of chromatography. This program intends for calculation of peak profiles in non-linear high-performance chromatography and uses unsimplified adsorption isotherm equations The computational algorithm and program have been tested by applying these to experimental data of thymine adsorption under conditions of reversed-phase highperformance liquid chromatography. The results of numerical calculations for different sample size introduced agree satisfactorily with experimental data and show the characteristic properties of high-performance chromatography, The usefulness of the Prep-LEAR program was confirmed by predicting peak profiles in preparative adsorption chromatographic processes

This paper presents a new computational algorithm for reliability inference with dynamic hybrid Bayesian network. It features a component-based algorithm and structure to represent complex engineering systems characterized by discrete functional states (including degraded states), and models of underlying physics of failure, with continuous variables. The methodology is designed to be flexible and intuitive, and scalable from small localized functionality to large complex dynamic systems. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) inference is optimized using pre-computation and dynamic programming for real-time monitoring of system health. The scope of this research includes new modeling approach, computation algorithm, and an example application for on-line System Health Management.

Numerical algorithm for solving dynamic problems of the theory of viscoelastic medium of Kelvin-Voigt is worked out on the basis of Ivanov's method of constructing finite difference schemes with prescribed dissipative properties. In one-dimensional problem the results of computations are compared with the exact solution, describing the propagation of plane monochromatic waves. When solving two-dimensional problems, the total approximation method based on the splitting of the system with respect to the spatial variables is applied. The algorithm is tested on solving the problem of traveling surface waves. For illustration of the method, the numerical solution of Lamb's problem about instantaneous action of concentrated force on the boundary of a half-plane is represented in viscoelastic formulation.

An effective computational algorithm for rate-independent crystal plasticity based on a single crystal yield surface with an application to tube hydroforming

Up to now, several computational methods have been proposed for crystal plasticity models. The main objective of these computational methods has been to overcome the problem with the non-uniqueness of active slip systems during the plastic deformation of a single crystal. Crystal plasticity models based on a single crystal yield function have been proposed as alternative algorithms to overcome this problem. But the problem with these models is that they use a highly non-linear yield function for the crystal, which makes them computationally expensive. In this paper, a computational method is proposed that would modify a single crystal yield function in order to make it computationally efficient. Also to better capture experimental data, a new parameter is introduced into the single crystal yield function to make it more flexible. For verification, this crystal plasticity model was directly applied for the simulation of hydroforming of an extruded aluminum tube under complex strain paths. It was found that the current model is considerably faster than the previous crystal plasticity model based on a power-law type single crystal yield surface. Due to its computational efficiency, the current crystal plasticity model can also be used to calculate the anisotropy coefficients of phenomenological yield functions. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Stability investigation of velocity-modulated gear system using a new computational algorithm

By considering the lubricant in gear system, one degree-of-freedom model is set up which incorporates the pinion's speed and the drag torque as the excitation sources. By introducing a permissible error (), a new computational algorithm using double-changed time steps is proposed in order to reduce the ill-conditioning arising from the numerical stiffness of the gear system and validated by comparison with Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg integration scheme. Then, the influences of the lubricant on the vibration of the gear system are analyzed. The results obtained in this paper indicate that the proposed numerical algorithm not only improves the accuracy of the solution, but also accelerates the calculation speed of the whole system. And according to the collision feature, the contributions of the lubricant on the system are totally different with different pinion's speed and drag torque. Next, by introducing the proposed computational algorithm into the Floquet theory, the stability analyses of the gear system are investigated under the different excitation sources, which demonstrates that the excitation sources significantly affect the operating instability regions. In practice, particular instabilities can be minimized by the proper selection of pinion's speed and drag torque, which can be adjusted according to the working requirements in advance.
