The field of graphical environments for the computer-aideddesign of controlsystems is surveyed in this paper. It is shown that the principal developments have occurred in the past decade, during which the computing power available, in terms of both hardware and software, has increased rapidly. The salient features of the work of major contributors to the field are described and discussed. Characteristics of a modem graphical environment are identified, and their influence on the design process for controlsystems is considered. Possible future developments are outlined, and it is concluded that graphical environments will have profound effects on the design, simulation and implementation of controlsystems, and on the philosophical basis of the whole of control engineering.

This paper proposes a multi-objective evolutionary automated design methodology for multi-variable quantitative feedback theory (QFT) controlsystems. Unlike existing analytical and convex optimization-based QFT design approaches, the evolutionary 'intelligent' technique is capable of automatically evolving both the nominal controller and the pre-filter simultaneously to meet the usually conflicting multiple performance requirements in QFT, without going through the sequential and conservative design stages for each of the multi-variable subsystems. In addition, it avoids the need of manual QFT bound computation and trial-and-error loop-shaping design procedures, which are particularly useful for multi-variable or unstable plants where stabilizing controllers may be difficult to synthesize. The effectiveness of the proposed QFT design methodology is validated upon a benchmark multi-variable system, which offers a set of low-order Pareto optimal controllers satisfying all closed-loop performances under practical constraints.

An interactive multiobjective optimisation method was introduced in this study to tune satisfactory modes of a PID controller. An interval process was modelled by a set of transfer functions in this study. In general, such processes could not be handled by a PID controller which was tuned by a single-objective optimisation method. A trade-off tuning rule based on multi-objective optimisation methods was introduced to overcome this drawback. The robust stability for this multi-modelling controlsystem performed by the multi-objective optimisation approach was automatically guaranteed. Extension to cascade controlsystems was also developed.

The paper focuses on how the object-oriented paradigm can be exploited as a valid modelling technique in many engineering fields and, in particular, in advanced automation engineering. The most typical features of object-oriented modelling techniques include encapsulation of data, functions to access such data into objects, and hierarchical composition of objects. On the other hand, the large majority of complex systems, like industrial plants and distributed controlsystems, can be decomposed into a hierarchical structure that facilitates system comprehension, design and control. Consequently, the object-oriented modelling technique is suited to real-world modelling, in particular in representing the hybrid dynamics (continuous-time, discrete-time and discrete-event) of industrial plants.
