Adaptive controllers are often criticized for the lack of clear and easy verification procedures that relate design parameters to time domain performance especially during transients. For this reason it is a challenge to rigorously certify existing adaptive control algorithms. To that end, we propose a validation framework where stability and performance requirements are formulated in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities. This brings the advantage that adaptive controller design and verification can be analyzed and optimized via the solution of a convex optimization whose objective is to guarantee the evolution of the error components within an a-priori specified domain. This approach was cast to verify the performance of the recently introduced Frequency-limited adaptive control scheme. A detailed case study is presented to show the efficacy of the proposed verification architecture.

This paper presents a comparative analysis between three control techniques based on the Direct Power Control (DPC) algorithm for grid-tied Voltage Source Inverters (VSI). These techniques are used to regulate the injection of instantaneous active and reactive powers in a power system for renewable generation system applications. The first technique corresponds to the Classical DPC (C-DPC) and it is based on the definition of a Virtual Flux (VF). In the second one, the instantaneous active and reactive powers are estimated by using the time derivatives of the injected currents, without any voltage sensors. The third algorithm uses the Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique to generate additional space vectors and it considers the minimum square error of the instantaneous active and reactive powers to determine the switching states. Simulation results of the three control techniques are presented and their performance is compared based on some criteria such as maximum steadystate power error, the current total harmonic distortion and the rise time.

The bidirectional DC-DC converters (BDC) is extensively promoted for numerous applications. Dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter is preferred among all other BDC converters for medium and high power application. There are some key challenges of isolated boost based BDC converters. Isolated boost based BDC converters offer high voltage spike, high current stress, and additional conduction losses due to flowing the freewheeling current in the switches of the low-voltage-side bridge of DAB converter. The auxiliary clamping circuits have been required to mitigate freewheeling current. The BDC converter with dual-switch forward (DSF) snubber has been presented in this paper. The converter operation of the BDC converter has been discussed. The various auxiliary clamping circuits have been explained. The control algorithm of the BDC DSF snubber circuit has been conferred. The comparative analysis has been considered among all BDC converters with the auxiliary clamping circuits. The PSIM simulation tool has been chosen to verify the effectiveness of the converter in the closed-loop control of the converter. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the converter.

This paper discusses the servo control system of three-axis stabilized video tracking platform. The system mechanical structures, and the hardware of servo control system are introduced. In order to achieve tracking accuracy, an improved square control algorithm and feed forward scheme are implemented in the system. Both the debugging and tracking experiments have been carried out. The results demonstrate the designed servo control system and its control algorithms for three-axis video tracking platform are effective.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have received considerable attention from the academic community and technology solutions companies, given their civilian and military applications. The autopilot system shall be thoroughly tested in lab because an accident may cause irreversible damage to the UAV. This article presents a proposal of a Hardware-In-the-Loop platform for testing and validation of a small fixed-wing aircraft. Besides a communication system, it was developed a deflection measurement platform of the aircraft control surfaces. This measurement platform was validated, enabling future work on implementing embedded control algorithms.

Distributed energy resources (DERs) are becoming an important part of distribution systems, because of their economic and environmental benefits. Although their inherent intermittency and volatility introduce uncertainties into the electric power system, they have the potential to provide controllability to the system under proper coordination. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical control algorithm for distribution systems with DERs so that they have controllability similar to a generator bus. The upper level scheduler solves a chance-constrained optimal power flow (OPF) problem to plan the operation of the DERs based on forecasts, and the lower level distributed DER controllers leverage the extremum seeking approach to deliver the planned power at the feeder head. The proposed algorithm is tested on a modified IEEE 13-node feeder, demonstrating its effectiveness.

An increasing number of distributed generation units (DG units) are connected to the distribution network. These generators affect the operation and coordination of the distribution network protection. The influence from DG units that are coupled to the network with a power electronic converter (PEC) is different from that of conventional DG units with an electrical machine directly coupled to the network. This contribution shows that PEC-based DG units can be controlled in such a way that the negative influence on the distribution network protection is limited. A decision tree and a flow-chart are presented that show how a PEC-based DG should respond to network faults. The flow-chart can be used in real time to bring the proper control algorithm in operation during a fault.

This paper proposes a new control algorithm to run a Volt/VAR optimization (VVO) scheme. The expected benefit of the proposed VVO control algorithm is to increase effectiveness of the VVO scheme by identifying optimal times when VVO scheme needs to be turned On and Off. The VVO effectiveness is measured in terms of saved kWh. A NN (Neural Network) based prediction model is used to identify optimal VVO strategy. A NN is designed to provide day-ahead hourly energy prediction at each substation with VVO scheme by using a number of predictors, such as hourly ambient conditions, day of the week, time of the day, etc. A NN is used for its ability to model nonlinear and complex interactions of predictors to provide accurate day-ahead predictions. The proposed approach is illustrated using an actual case study.

The realization of small, unmanned, automatic airplanes is a significant project at Obuda University. Essential results have been achieved regarding automatic take-off and navigation. Another important research field is development of design methods for adaptive controllers as alternatives to the Lyapunov function technique. For guaranteeing global stability this method means the realization of a complicated process that does not reveal subtle details of the trajectory tracking of the controlled system. These details depend on the numerous adaptive parameters of the Lyapunov function the optimal setting of which can be achieved e.g. by evolutionary techniques and ample numerical investigations. The suggested alternative primarily concentrated on these details and has only a few parameters. Without complementary parameter tuning only local stability can be achieved, but for a wide set of physical systems tuning only one of its parameters can maintain global stability. Our aim is to integrate these researches. The here presented results, i.e. that of simulation investigations on the "Robust Fixed Point Transformations (RFPT)" based control of the linearized model of a small airplane mean the first definite step in this direction. The convergence of the controller is stabilized by independent agents (model-independent observers) that are able to recognize whether the tuned control parameter approached the boundary of convergence and intervenes the tuning process accordingly. The expectation is the improvement of the already existing control algorithms.

This paper presents a novel method of modeling SRM including mutual coupling effect based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Once the machine geometry and design is completed in FEA, it is required to analyze the performance of the machine at different operating conditions with different control methods. Designing control algorithm with FEA in the loop is not convenient because of the complexity and simulation time involved. An analytical model performing similar to the FEA model and including the mutual coupling effect is desired during tuning of the control algorithm at different modes and variable speeds of operation. The self and mutual λ-i-θ characteristics of the machine can be derived from the FEA model and stored in a look-up table. A state space model based on the λ-i-θ characteristics of the machine is developed which can be readily coupled to any controller model. The method incorporates the mutual coupling effect which cannot be neglected for accurate modeling and good controller performance.
