Collecting data from a tremendous amount of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices for next generation networks is a big challenge. A large number of devices may lead to severe congestion in Radio Access Network (RAN) and Core Network (CN). 3GPP has specified several mechanisms to handle the congestion caused by massive amounts of devices. However, detailed settings and strategies of them are not defined in the standards and are left for operators. In this paper, we propose two congestion control algorithms which efficiently reduce the congestion. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can achieve 20～40% improvement regarding accept ratio, overload degree and waiting time compared with those in LTE-A.

Reducing the carbon footprint of data centers is becoming a primary goal of large IT companies. Due to the intermittency and unpredictability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, it is quite challenging to utilize them in data centers. In this paper, we explore the opportunities offered by delay-tolerant workloads and thermal storage to facilitate the renewable energy integration in data centers and meanwhile, reduce the cost of using brown energy (i.e., energy from the utility grid). A stochastic optimization problem is formulated to tackle the stochastic renewable generation and workload arrival processes. Then, an online control algorithm based on the Lyapunov optimization approach is proposed to solve it. Simulation results based on the real-world traces show the effectiveness of the algorithm in practice.

This paper introduces a novel Web-based laboratory for the design and real-time implementation of networked control experiments. By adopting a three-tier architecture, i.e. Webbrowsers, server clusters and test rigs, the laboratory connects experiment device located globally and provides control experiment options such as local control structure, Intranet-based control and Internetbased control structure. Users can design networked control algorithms in a diagram-based way and validate their algorithms using test rigs easily on the laboratory with a simple Web browser. Networked control blockset is developed to facilitate the configuration of network and the design of controller in the lab. Web-based simulation and practical experiments of networked predictive control scheme are performed to illustrate the functionality of the Web-based lab and the effectiveness of networked predictive control method.

Cameras are often controlled by algorithms adapting the image capturing process parameters (like exposure or gain) to the present scene. In most cases these algorithms have to be parametrized by a parameter set in order to define the behavior of the control. The issue of selecting the best parameter set for a specific application or environment arises. The parameter selection is not a simple task since the internal structure of the control algorithm is often not sufficiently known by the user. Only the inputs (parameter sets) can be specified and the outputs (images) can be analyzed. This paper presents a generic workflow for the determination of a parameter set which achieves good image quality for a chosen application with specific light conditions. The developed workflow is able to deal with any control algorithm and any chosen application. In general, the four main steps of the developed workflow are: 1. Build a database of images with their related parameter sets, 2. Evaluate which image criteria are best to assess the image quality for the particular application, 3. Choose an optimization method, 4. Optimize the parameter sets. The presented workflow is developed and examined based on the example of real-world automotive scenarios. At the end of the paper experimental results confirm that the optimized camera parameters achieve a meaningful and useful optimization result regarding the images captured by the camera.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) aim to monitor and control complex real-world phenomena where the computational cost and real-time constraints could be a major challenge. Many-core hardware accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs) promise to enhancing computation, leveraging the data parallelism often found in real-world scenarios of CPS, but performance is limited by the overhead of the data transfer between the host and the device memory. For example, plasma control in the HBT-EP Tokamak device at Columbia University [11, 18] must execute the control algorithm in a few microseconds, but may take tens of microseconds to copy the data set between the host and the device memory. This paper presents a zero-copy I/O processing scheme that maps the I/O address space of the system to the virtual address space of the compute device, allowing sensors and actuators to transfer data to and from the compute device directly. Experiments using the plasma control system show a 33% reduction in computational cost, and microbenchmarks with more generic matrix operations show a 34% reduction, while in both cases, effective data throughput remains at least as good as the current best performers.

This video presents practical realizations and comparison between three different haptic tele-control algorithms of aerial vehicles. These strategies, besides addressing the classical issues of stability and transparency, provide different alternatives for overcoming challenges that are peculiar to haptic teleoperation of aerial vehicles. The experimental results show the performance and effectiveness of the proposed control algorithms even in the presence of significant time delays.

The paper presents a fixed-point realization of non-minimum phase system inversion for inversion based control algorithms such as feedforward, repetitive controller, and iterative learning control. Based on the author's previous work on efficient dynamic inversion using stable pole-zero cancelation and non-minimum phase zero inversion using Kurosu filter, this paper employs the use of the Delta Operator filter realization to mitigate quantization effects in fixed-point computations. The Kurosu filter based inversion, where the difference of two IIR filters are used to approximate a high order FIR filter and switches are used to perform time reversals for phase compensation, is computationally efficient and well suited for low level fixed-point realization by digital signal processors or field programmable gate arrays. However, substantial quantization noise is evident in high sampling rate implementation. The Delta Operator realization increases computational complexity only slightly while providing substantial reduction of quantization noise. The method is employed in the feedforward and repetitive control of a piezoelectric actuator and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Recently, operators have resorted to femtocell networks in order to enhance indoor coverage and increase system capacity. Nevertheless, to successfully deploy such solution, efficient resource allocation algorithms and interference mitigation techniques should be deployed. The new applications delivered by operators require large amounts of network bandwidth. Whereas, some customers may want to pay more in exchange for a better quality of service (QoS), some others need less resources and can be charged accordingly. Hence, we consider an OFDMA femtocell network serving both QoS constrained high-priority (HP) and best-effort (BE) users. Our objective is to satisfy a maximum number of HP users while serving BE users as well as possible. This optimization problem is multi-objective NP-hard. For this aim, we propose in this paper a new resource allocation and admission control algorithm, called Q-FCRA, based on clustering and taking into account QoS requirements. We show by extensive network simulation results that our proposal outperforms two state of the art schemes (Centralized-Dynamic Frequency Planning, C-DFP, and Distributed Random Access, DRA) as well as our previous proposal, FCRA, in both low and high density networks. The results concern the number of accepted users, the fairness, the throughput satisfaction rate and the spectrum spatial reuse.

Voltage instability occurs when a power system is unable to meet reactive power demand at one or more buses. Voltage instability events have caused several major outages and promise to become more frequent due to increasing energy demand. The future smart grid may help to ensure voltage stability by enabling rapid detection of possible voltage instability and implementation of corrective action. These corrective actions will only be effective in restoring stability if they are chosen in a timely, scalable manner. Current techniques for selecting control actions, however, rely on exhaustive search, and hence may choose an inefficient control strategy. In this paper, we propose a submodular optimization approach to designing a control strategy to prevent voltage instability at one or more buses. Our key insight is that the deviation from the desired voltage is a super-modular function of the set of reactive power injections that are employed, leading to computationally efficient control algorithms with provable optimality guarantees. Furthermore, we show that the optimality bound of our approach can be improved from 1/3 to 1/2 when the power system operates under heavy loading conditions. We demonstrate our framework through extensive simulation study on the IEEE 30 bus test case.

This paper applies time delay approach to control the active power in a grid connected distributed generation unit under varying load conditions. The control algorithm is developed in time domain;therefore, it is (almost) independent of the frequency and phase of the grid voltage. As a result it does not require frequency measurement, phased locked loop (PLL) system, and dq-transformation which reduces the complexity of the control algorithm. However, it is still possible to control the output voltage, or reactive power, at the common coupling point, independent of the dispatched active power.
