Methods are given for computing extended maximum likelihood estimates in which one or more parameter estimates are infinite at the supremum of the likelihood. The results are given for a broad class of regression-like models based on independent observations with linearly related parameters including, in particular, the generalized linear models. The estimation consists of two steps: A linear programming step to identify the infinite components and a more conventional function optimization step to optimize the remaining finite components. Provision is made for nuisance parameters. Two algorithms are presented and examples illustrating their use are given.

Biometric features such as fingerprint images can be authenticated by not only computer algorithms but also optical systems. In previous works, double random phase encoding (DRPE) optical lens system is employed for fingerprint verification. However, such a system can yield authentication failure when the key is generated from a slightly distorted fingerprint image. In this work, a fingerprint image pre-processing scheme for DRPE fingerprint optical authentication system is proposed. Simulated experimental results demonstrate the proposed method has significantly better robustness to shift, rotation and scale variance than some of the conventional DRPE-based approaches.

Karawo is a traditional embroidered cloth for the people of the Gorontalo region. Currently karawo has been widely used by the surrounding community and the outside community in the form of souvenirs or other things. On the one hand, the Gorontalo Region is an area that has many cultures and customs. We need to protect and preserve this culture so that this culture does not quickly become extinct. The lack of karawo motif designs that have a Gorontalo regional cultural philosophy causes karawo craftsmen to lack ideas to design karawo motifs in various design variations. This can be overcome by creating a system that can make several variations of the karawo motif design with the help of computer algorithms. The development of this karawo motif design uses several object or image transformation functions, namely rotation, translation, mirror, flip and zoom functions. To enrich the object so that it looks varied, arithmetic operations and boolean operations are also used to value the color component of each point in the image. The usability measurement results show that the eligibility value of usefulness is 85.71%, ease of use is 100%, ease of learning is 85.71% and satisfaction is 92.86%. The average of all dimensions is 91.07% or it is included in the very satisfied category.

Hardware and software improvements make it likely that biological size networks, i.e., networks with more than 10 10 couplings, can be simulated in the near future. In order to support education in distributed system fundamentals and to elucidate the function of distributed algorithms and protocols, we apply animations of formal models which concentrate on the mediation of aspects of the dynamic system behavior. For this purpose we adapted and extended approaches and tools supporting the animation of sequential algorithms. Besides sets of special animations, the results comprise a set of view types providing for the convenient presentation of dynamic properties. Furthermore, we report on experiences we gained from a series of corresponding educational experiments.

Measurement of aortic input impedance in the rat is complicated by a high basal heart rate but is possible if appropriate compensation is made for frequency-dependent errors in modulus and phase resulting from analog filters in the equipment and from nonalignment of pressure and flow sensors. Because input impedance is a complex quantity, accurate values for both phase and modulus are required before meaningful interpretation of the data can be made. We measured aortic pressure and electromagnetic ascending aortic blood flow in mature, ether-anesthetized, open-chest male Wistar rats. Pressure and flow waveforms were averaged in the time domain and converted to Fourier series. Flow moduli were corrected for the measured frequency response of the flowmeter. Phase spectra were corrected by the classic frequency-domain and two new time-domain methods. Compensation for instrumentation errors was assessed at two different flowmeter filter settings in five animals. Reproducibility, variability, and the effects of vasoconstriction were assessed in 43 animals. Three methods of estimating characteristic impedance from the impedance spectra were evaluated and found to produce comparable results at baseline and following pharmacological elevation of blood pressure with graded methexamine infusion. Physiologically equivalent values for phase, as assessed by comparing oscillatory power calculated from the impedance spectra, were obtained with each of the phase-correction techniques. The new time-domain methods facilitate the assessment of aortic input impedance in this small animal model because they do not require measurement of the spatial separation between pressure and flow transducers and pulse wave velocity in the proximal aorta.

We investigate numerically totalistic cellular automata rules in four and five dimensions that have been recently proposed by Chaté and Manneville and that show periodic or quasiperiodic time sequences in the magnetization. We show how to implement such rules fast on a Connection Machine. We confirm the proposed behavior by analyzing the time and size dependence of the distance from the attractor. Also the dependence of the initial configuration, the behavior of very small systems and mean-field calculations are presented.
