Smart home environments require tight coupling between different types of sensors, actuators, and computer algorithms. To address the challenges in building a robust and effective smart home environment, it is essential to develop a systematic approach to handling a large number of components and their interactions. We describe a wholistic, multi-layered, and service oriented approach to smart home environment design that will enable abstractions needed for deploying system applications and analyzing individual modules. This paper presents our approach and modules, sensors, and actuators that are required for intelligent services in smart home environments.

Congestion control and avoidance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is a subject that has attracted a lot of research attention in the last decade. Besides rate and resource control, the utilization of mobile nodes has also been suggested as a way to control congestion. In this work, we present a Mobile Congestion Control (MobileCC) algorithm with two variations, to assist existing congestion control algorithms in facing congestion in WSNs. The first variation employs mobile nodes that create locally-significant alternative paths leading to the sink. The second variation employs mobile nodes that create completely individual (disjoint) paths to the sink. Simulation results show that both variations can significantly contribute to the alleviation of congestion in WSNs.

Control technique that utilizes the advantage of parallel processing to increase the computational speed has been widely studied. A parallel non-linear MPC by using a decomposition method with feedback compensation is proposed to provide a faster control algorithm that is feasible for real time application. To guarantee the effectiveness of proposed algorithm, numerical simulations of two-tank level control system are illustrated. Simulation results shown that the proposed method consumes less computational time than conventional C/GMRES method.

This book summarizes the state-of-the-art in unsupervised learning. In order to evaluate ventricular assist devices in heart failure (HF) patients, an optimised lumped parameter model of cardiovascular system (CVS) in conjunction with left ventricle assist devices (LVAD) was used to investigate different control strategies. This paper presents the design of an advanced physiological method for the control of average pump flow in LVADs. The purpose of the proposed control method is to automatically adjust the pump speed to meet for changes in physiological demand. We propose an innovative approach combining a feed-forward and a dynamic sliding mode control (SMC) to determine an appropriate pump flow. Sensor-less measurement of pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is used as inputs to the dynamical model for pump flow estimation previously developed and verified in our laboratory using dogs data. The performance of the proposed control method is tested by carefully examining the immediate response of the controllers to short term of circulatory changes ranging from rest to exercise in CVS - LVAD interactions. Simulation results demonstrate that the developed controller properly tracks the desired reference flow in presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances for LVADs.

This paper presents a prototypical implementation of WSN-based daylight-responsive lighting and shading systems control in buildings that utilizes real-time sensing. This system can control the position of window blinds and the states of the luminaires to achieve the desirable visual comfort and energy efficiency based on the weather conditions and occupant activities. We first present the system architecture. Subsequently, the prototypical implementation is demonstrated. The outcome of this effort is expected to further articulate the system functionality and control algorithm towards implementations in real-life built environments.

The paper(1) is concerned with the operation in dynamic regime of an induction motor drive operated into deep flux weakening operation. Based on the induction motor's mathematic model, an algorithm for sensorless direct flux vector control (SDFVC) was implemented. The control schematic for SDFVC is described. The stator flux amplitude is controlled by the ds axis voltage component, while the load angle (and thus the torque) is regulated by the q(s)-axis voltage component. The proposed algorithm is suitable for low cost induction motor drives where accuracy in the speed estimation is not mandatory and is based on a closed-loop stator flux observer. The vector control block is realised with two PI regulators, the output of this regulators being the reference voltages in the stator coordinates oriented along the stator flux. The authors studied the behavior of a drive system in the field weakening zone, in order to get a maximum torque considering the limitations imposed to currents and voltages. The system was also tested in transient regimes of acceleration and deceleration, the stationary regime being studied too. The experimental data gathered during the accomplishing of the drive system tests when the control algorithm was employed are presented and discussed in the end. The tested three phase induction motor has a power of 4 kW.

In the future, it may be possible to employ large numbers of autonomous marine vehicles to perform tedious and dangerous tasks, such as minesweeping. Hypothetically, groups of vehicles may leverage their numbers by cooperating. A fundamental form of cooperation is to perform tasks while maintaining a geometric formation. The formation behavior can then enable other cooperative behaviors. In this paper, we describe a leader-follower formation-flying control algorithm. This algorithm can be applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional formations, and contains a degree of built-in robustness. Simulations and experiments are described that characterize the performance of the formation control algorithm. The experiments utilized surface craft that were equipped with an acoustic navigation and communication system, representative of the technologies that constrain the operation of underwater autonomous vehicles. The simulations likewise included the discrete-time nature of the communication and navigation.

In this paper, a novel assembling omni-directional mobile robot is designed for assemble work and adapting to confined space in the automated factories. In order to complete the assembly operation tasks more precisely, a new trajectory tracking method based on infrared array module is proposed in the control system of the robot. The different patterns of the infrared array and trajectory width are optimized for getting more trajectory tracking accuracy. Further, the trajectory tracking control algorithm is achieved. And trajectory tracking experiment is performed on the robot prototype to verify the proposed tracking method.

There is presented a method for calculation of inertial model for an open-loop oscillating system based on the system step response. Presented method is simple and can be easily used in automatic control practice. Identified model can be applied in control algorithms more advanced than the PID controller, for instance in the predictive control.
