This paper addresses the problem of using a team of UAVs to cooperatively monitor multiple forest fires (called hotspots) in a region. We deploy two types of agents: service agents that locally monitor the state of the hotspots and detector agents that search for hotspots and assign service agents to those that are detected. We develop an assignment scheme based on auctions to perform the assignment of a hotspot to a group of service agents. While monitoring a hotspot, service agents are required to be equally spaced around the perimeter. In order to achieve equal spacing around the hotspot perimeter, we develop a splay state controller that ensures the convergence of the service agents to the equally spaced configuration. We also address the problems associated with tracking hotspots that expand in size and possibly combine together. Simulation results are presented to validate the assignment and control algorithms.

We propose several stochastic approximation implementations for related algorithms in flow-control of communication networks. First, a discrete-time implementation of Kelly's primal flow-control algorithm is proposed. Convergence with probability 1 is shown, even in the presence of communication delays and stochastic effects seen in link congestion indications. This ensues from an analysis of the flow-control algorithm using the asynchronous stochastic approximation (ASA) framework. Two relevant enhancements are then pursued: a) an implementation of the primal algorithm using second-order information, and b) an implementation where edge-routers rectify misbehaving flows. Next, discrete-time implementations of Kelly's dual algorithm and primal-dual algorithm are proposed. Simulation results a) verifying the proposed algorithms and, b) comparing the stability properties are presented.

A stability proof of a recently introduced supervised adaptive control algorithm is presented. The novel premise of the algorithm is its dual model architecture. The approach addresses the well known parameter burst and infinite drift phenomena. The stability result demonstrates that the dual model supervised adaptive control algorithm is robust with respect to small model/plant mismatch and bounded disturbances. Ydstie's Switching Lemma and Lyapunov stability results constitute the foundations of the theoretical results. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate the algorithm's potential.

This paper examines control of rotational permanent-magnet mini- and microscale electromechanical motion devices focusing on control of complex electromagnetic-electromechanical-vibroacoustic phenomena, energy conversion, torque production, motion dynamics, etc. The studied devices, integrated with controlling/driving ICs, are referenced as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). We research design concepts and synthesize control algorithms to improve overall performance and enhance MEMS capabilities. Data-intensive analysis and coherent synthesis are accomplished by: (1) Examining device physics;(2) Deriving, validating and applying high-fidelity models;(3) Performing heterogeneous simulations, consistent experiments and sound evaluation;(4) Developing an adaptive performance-seeking design concept;(5) Implementing enabling minimal complexity control laws. It is possible to optimize performance and expand MEMS capabilities by designing sound closed-loop systems. The synthesized minimal complexity control laws ensure a near-balanced operation. Processing, controlling and driving circuitry with high-switching-frequency (approx10 MHz) PWM amplifiers can be implemented by monolithic ICs. We control the duty cycle of transistors varying the phase voltages applied to the permanent-magnet synchronous minimotors. The results reported enable one to apply fundamental concepts to design high-performance mini- and microsystems. Complex electromagnetic, electromechanical and vibroacoustic phenomena are controlled and optimized in the behavioral domain. The experimental results are reported for proof-of-concept systems.

This paper presents a new Digital Self-Oscillating Modulator (DiSOM) for DC/DC converters. The DiSOM modulator alllows the digital control algorithm to sample the output voltage at a sampling frequency higher than the converter switching frequency. This enables higher control loop bandwidth than for traditional digital PWM modulators given a certain switching frequency. A synchronised version of the DiSOM modulator is derived for interleaved converters. A prototype interleaved Buck converter for Point of Load applications has been designed and built to test the performance of DiSOM modulator. The DiSOM modulator and a digital control algorithm have been implemented in an FPGA. Experimental results show that the converter has a very fast transient response when a loadstep is applied to the output. For a loadstep of 50% of nominal output current the output voltage overshoot is less than 2.5% of the nominal output voltage and the settling time is just 8 switching periods.

Considering the special characteristic of a cable-mesh deployable antenna, the adjustment method for the cable-mesh reflector is studied in this paper. The cable-mesh model first is developed based on Lagrange principle and its stiff matrix is deduced. Then, an adaptive control algorithm is presented based on the stiff matrix to only require coordinate values of part nodes. Finally, numeral result shows the validity and effectiveness of the algorithms.

Matrix Converters present several advantages in some power electronic applications, but their control is a complicated task. Matlab-Simulink is a very useful tool for the developing of control algorithms for power converters. In this paper, an exhaustive analysis of Double Sided Space Vector Modulation for a Matrix Converter is presented. The synthesis of the complex Space Vector Modulator is done using a single S-Function, thus simplifying and accelerating the implementation and debugging of the controller of a Matrix Converter. The implementation procedure of the modulation strategy presents several important advantages, mainly, an acceleration of the time dedicated to the implementation of the modulator, a more reliable design, because the debugging is straightforward, and faster simulation times of the entire platform. The simulation method allows an easy way to synthesize the modulation algorithm in a FPGA, in this way, this paper contributes to the development of the IPMs. Finally, the results of applying the present Space Vector Modulator for the control of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator DFIG are presented, showing that complex control of Matrix Converter is minimized.

The systematic comparison of the atomic structure of solid compounds has become an important task in crystallography, chemistry, physics and materials science, in particular in the context of structure prediction and structure determination of crystalline solids. In this work, an efficient and robust algorithm for the comparison of periodic structures is presented, which is based on the mapping of the point patterns of the two structures into each other. This algorithm has been implemented as the module CMPZ in the structure visualization and analysis program KPLOT.
