In this paper we discuss a preliminary study which is one of a series of studies conducted to design a computer software system which helps self-educate spoken English learners. This software system detects English language syllable stress and uses the results to guide the prospective learners towards a successful learning of spoken English. When learners are learning another language, they confront a number of problems as each language is unique and carries particular aspects. learning to speak a new language is more than just learning words, phrases and sentences. The difficulties of a spoken language student become worse when an adult student whose vernacular tongue belongs to a syllable-time language such as Mandarin, makes an effort to learn a stress-time spoken language such as English. In a stress-time language, it is the utterances with correct word stress and thereby sentence stress which is usually a problem among adult learners. Using the right sentence stress is the key point in proper communication. For a learner whose vernacular tongue is syllable-time, making mistakes in this area is very common. Following these patterns, a case study was conducted with 50 final year university undergraduate students whose vernacular tongue is syllable-time such as Sinhalese or Tamil. The final year undergraduate students who learn English aim to spot the difficulties they face in using correct intonation in the process of learning another language. The results of the study indicate that there is a considerable amount of sentence stress problems among the students of spoken English.

The goal of this research was to study the attitudes of English language teachers of intermediate level schools in the Al Madina region with respect to the effectiveness of computer assisted language learning (CALL) in teaching and learning English, and to seek their views on various issues pertaining to readiness for implementation of teaching using CALL. The views of intermediate level teachers had not been studied prior to this research. A mixture of qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in the data collection process. The researcher designed a questionnaire and an interview to ascertain the teachers’ attitudes, and also the status of computer usage in teaching English in the classrooms, and the teachers’ readiness to use computers to teach English and move away from ‘traditional’ face-to-face *** study aimed to inform stakeholders of what might be needed to empower teachers with the skills and equipment necessary for the introduction of this innovation and provide information that could facilitate implementation of computers in teaching English in intermediate level schools, in Al Madina, Saudi Arabia, with the hope that such practice could be generalised throughout the Kingdom at *** results of the research disclosed that teachers felt that Saudi Arabia was not technologically advanced in teaching English but most teachers had knowledge about using computers and the Internet in teaching English and would welcome the implementation of computers in intermediate schools, but overall they felt that more training and information was needed. It was found that students also have knowledge of using computers and the Internet but some did not have adequate access to either. Also, there were already ICT systems in some (mainly private) schools and that teaching and learning English via computers was believed to be entertaining, enjoyable and more effective than traditional methods and could provide access to remote students, enabling distance e

It has often been proposed that computer programs simulating written conversation could be effective in language teaching and remediation. This paper presents a theoretical rationale for this approach, and reports empirical studies of its potential. Although the studies were concemed mainly with language-impaired children, their findings should have some relevance for the wider field of computer assisted language learning in general.

The use of computers has revolutionized the learning and teaching process. In case of learninglanguages its contribution is very important due to the availability of various multimedia tools. computer assisted language learning (CALL) is a well established area of research. This has lead to a shift of focus from the teacher to the learner by giving the learner a greater level of autonomy. CALL focuses on the receptive skills of reading and listening which are very necessary for learning a language. In this paper we will analyze the features and advantages of CALL. A lot of people do not take up learninglanguages like Japanese inspite of their interest in that language only due to its entirely different pictographic writing system that is not easy to master. Classroom and textbook teaching alone would not suffice for learning the essential basics of Japanese language. Therefore in this paper we shall also be presenting an e-learning tool that can be used to learn and teach basics of Japanese language in a more interactive manner.

The article deals with the ways of application of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology to computer assisted language learning (CALL) systems. Speech technology can be effectively used for such methodological purposes as pronunciation training, drilling communication skills, checking students' vocabulary and training listening comprehension skills. Despite some limitations, it is now possible to apply different types of speech technology to teaching which is effective for simplification of teaching process realization. Integration of ASR to a CALL system developed by Speech Technology Center is presented in the article.

Virtual Special Issues (VSIs) are a new format introduced to System to highlight previously published articles that made a particular impact on the field. This introduction to the first VSI, "TELL us about CALL", shows developments of Technology enhanced (TELL) or computerassisted (CALL) languagelearning represented through often-cited articles. As one of the most prominent and long-standing journals dealing with technology in languagelearning and teaching, System is well placed to represent the development of the field. For this purpose, twelve articles from issues of System between 2004 and 2015 were chosen based on the frequency of citations they received, weighted by number of years in publication. The selection shows that CALL and TELL have come a long way over the past decade: trends towards more ecological and long-term studies are identified, and speculation about future developments is presented. A broader view of the field also ascertains that CALL has become normalised, in practice as well as in research, and the implicit use of computers for language teaching as well as for data collection and data analysis has led to a widening of publication outlets and an uptake of TELL articles in applied linguistics publications, in general. This study investigated ESL teachers' perceptions regarding the use of computer assisted language learning (CALL) in teaching reading to children. A random sample of 145 teachers participated in the study by completing a survey developed by the researchers. To explore the situation in depth, 16 teachers were later interviewed. Results indicated that the main purpose of using CALL with children is to help them develop reading strategies and increase their motivation. The most common strategies teachers reported using were computers to: enhance children's reading skills, support children's reading, listen to stories read aloud, recognize letter/sound relationships, and identify letters and beginning sounds of words. Teachers reported that CALL has some benefits, such as providing opportunities for active interaction and differentiated instruction. The main barriers of using CALL are the lack of resources and suitable software and hardware. The study ended with recommendations for further research and instructional improvements.

computer assisted language learning (CALL) uses computers in the languagelearning process. The design and development of CALL resources is difficult and sometimes the potential of HCI in the process is overlooked. This paper provides an overview of how the CALLIPSO (CALL for Irish for Parents Students and Others) system uses animated visualisation to demonstrate words are pronounced in Irish. Irish is an orthographically deep language and the pronunciation of a word is sometimes not immediately obvious to a learner. The CALLISPO system combines research findings from HCI and user-modelling to provide an interactive learning resource for Irish.

This paper discusses the importance of the use of new technologies as part of the pedagogy of language teacher training courses. It examines how wikis were used in a computer assisted language learning (CALL) course, which constituted a fourth-year compulsory component of a Bachelor of Arts in English language and Literature course. The method of examination used is presented and the data is discussed to establish students’ perceptions of the usefulness of the use of new technologies in their learning, and more specifically the contribution of wiki in their CALL teacher training.
