language immersion from birth is crucial to a child's language development. However, language immersion can be particularly challenging for hearing parents of deaf children to provide as they may have to overcome many difficulties while learning American Sign language (ASL). We are in the process of creating a mobile application to help hearing parents learn ASL. To this end, we have interviewed members of our target population to gain understanding of their motivations and needs when learning sign language. We found that the most common motivation for parents learning ASL is better communication with their children. Parents are most interested in acquiring more fluent sign language skills through learning to read stories to their children.

The teaching model based on Multimedia network is proposed to improve the efficiency and effect of mechanical English learning, the advantages of computer-assistedlearning is analyzed. By means of comparing the results of the experimental teaching model, conclusions are drawn that the experimental type (ET) can stimulate students' motivation much more than the control type (CP) can do. To elaborate the theoretical foundations of both task-based language teaching (TBLT) and computer assisted language learning (CALL) for mechanical engineering students, it shows the necessity and feasibility of TBLT based on Multimedia-Network for mechanical English. A teaching model for mechanical English is constructed which includes an experimental research in its application in teaching mechanical engineering students. The result of the experiment proves that the task-based teaching model based on multimedia network changes the students' passive attitude in traditional teaching process and makes them more active in the class. In this case students' interest and creativity are stimulated and their autonomous learning ability can be trained.

The British and American English are the most common target accents. British and American English have different phonetic symbol and pronunciation system. These two accents have many learners. And some learners have mixed phenomenon of British and American accent. Based on the mixed phenomenon British and American English accent for English learners, this paper put forwarder a model of American and British accent fusion method, improve the quality of the pronunciation evaluation performance system, and realize the embedded compressed acoustic model. This method divide acoustic model into alternative model, fusion model and encourage model by replace probability. The alternative model could be removed, and isolated model could be reserved. The fusion model could be merged based on model interpolation and model clip. Pronunciation quality evaluation results showed that the correlation of speaker level increased by 14.1%, compared with single accent model and in fusion model,;fusion model was similar to the performance of the hybrid model, the figure of gaussian component compressed by 10.7%.

Posterior probability measure is widely accepted as the most promising feature for automatic pronunciation quality evaluation. However, this measure is not phonetically consistent. This work presents a novel trainable phone-dependent transformation of posterior probability to deal with the problem. Both linear and non-linear transforms are investigated. Close form solution is found for linear transformation and gradient-based method is derived for nonlinear transformation. Experimental results on the database of 3685 people showed significant improvement. The cross-correlation between human and machine scores increases from 0.582 to 0.760.

The rapid development of computer assisted language learning (CALL) has exerted a highly significant influence on college English teaching and learning. This paper intends to explore a brand new listening teaching model-Interactive Self-Access Listening (ISL) teaching model in MCALL (Multimedia CALL) environment and test its effectiveness in practical teaching implementation. After the quantitative data-collection and analysis, a conclusion is reached that most of the students show positive attitudes towards ISL and this model is effective to a large degree in the process of listening.

In this paper, we present our multiple parameter cluster analysis in our multiple languagelearning system. Towards this direction, we have used algorithmic approaches residing in the field of machine learning. Multiple parameter cluster analysis is conducted by the k-means clustering algorithm which takes as input seven important users' characteristics in order to initialize the process. The clustering is conducted by k-means clustering algorithm, which takes as input multiple user characteristics. The incorporation of k-means clustering is used to address several barriers posed by the heterogeneous learning audience of educational systems. After determining in which cluster each new student belongs, the system can reason about this specific student, adapting its behavior to the student's needs, performance and preferences.

This paper investigates using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based vowel duration features for automated assessment of non-native speech. Two different types of models were compared: a single GMM trained on a reference corpus of native speech and separate GMMs for different proficiency levels trained on a large corpus of scored non-native speech. 13 vowel categories were evaluated separately (after normalization by rate of speech), and a multiple regression model was used to evaluate the performance of all vowel categories combined. Experiments on an English language proficiency assessment show that the non-native speech GMMs outperform the native speech GMMs, and that all 13 vowels have significant correlations with human scores when the non-native speech GMMs are used. The multiple regression combination obtained correlations with human scores of 0.71 when transcriptions were used to extract the vowel durations and 0.64 when the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) output was used. The experiments demonstrate that the vowel duration feature based on non-native speech GMMs is a useful predictor of L2 proficiency and is robust to different datasets and situations.

While vocabulary learning is one of the challenging tasks of languagelearning, it is considered indispensable for language mastery. Vocabulary learning presents similar challenges for professionals who need to master new terminology and definitions. The use of technology has been seen to effectively support learners in the vocabulary learning challenges. In this paper, the usability and learnability of a bespoke web app, VLASTWA, is assessed in terms of usability, effectiveness and pedagogical efficacy. VLASTWA was designed and implemented utilizing effective and extensively researched vocabulary learning technique, the keyword method. In this experimental study, participants (n=160, age = 18-60) learned to use the keyword method and employed it in new vocabulary learning (Persian-English) using VLASTWA. VLASTWA experimental web app performed well in a usability study using System Usability Scale with a rating of 91.5%. Results demonstrated the web app as a usable and efficient instrument in acquiring new vocabulary and future research will investigate the inherent use of the designed web app for different population, other languages and sets of words and emerging technologies such as augment reality and virtual reality and electroencephalogram.

computer assisted language learning (CALL) is defined as any process in which a learner uses learning materials by means of a computer to improve his or her language (Ken Beatty, 2003). In China, with the rapid development of computer technology, computer assisted language learning has attracted lots of people's attention and it will soon be widely used in college English learning and teaching program. The aim of this thesis is to investigate college students' level of adaptability to the computer assisted language learning environment. Three aspects will be studied in this thesis to get an overall picture of students' adaptability to CALL. The three aspects are autonomous learning ability in CALL environment, affective factors in CALL, computer experience and its effect on affective factors in *** quantitative and qualitative research methods are adopted in this thesis to get overall and detailed understanding of current college students' adaptability to *** of this study are as follows:Firstly, students' general autonomous learning ability is acceptable. However, their autonomous learning ability in CALL is not very satisfying.
