Over the past decade, computer assisted language learning, any kind of languagelearning or teaching activity conducted by using computers, has increasingly become an important part of the language-learning process. As computer assisted language learning has been an integral part of education, it is inevitable that it attracts the attentions of pre-service English as Foreign language (EFL) teachers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes of pre-service EFL teachers of English as a Foreign language towards computer assisted language learning. The participants of the study include 112 pre-service EFL teachers studying in the English language Teaching Department of Dokuz Eylül University. The data collection instrument consists of a questionnaire which measures the participants’ attitudes towards computer assisted language learning. The data obtained from the questionnaires are analysed. It is expected that pre-service teachers of English as a Foreign language have positive attitudes towards the use of computer assisted language learning. In the light of the findings, some practical recommendations are presented.

In this paper, we will describe a system for evaluating the intonation of English utterances made by Japanese native speakers using synthesize speech for the rapid development of a computer-assistedlanguagelearning (CALL) system To evaluate the intonation of learners utterances, reference utterances are needed, for which native English speakers' utterances should be used However, it is costly to gather native speakers utterances for all sentences in the system Therefore, we examined an intonation evaluation method using synthesized speech generated by text-to-speech systems instead of real speech. The intonation evaluation system calculates scores between a learner's utterance and corresponding utterances by the teachers We first compared the reliability of intonation evaluation using native and synthesized utterances, and found that the reliability of evaluation using synthesized utterances could be improved by suing the weighted. Mahalanobis distance for calculating the evaluation score Next, we investigated a method of combining multiple scores of different teachers In addition we incorporated a feature for evaluating rhythm into intonation evaluation As a result, the correlation between scores by human evaluators and the system was improved Furthermore, we analyzed the tendency of intonation evaluations made by the system through limiting the valuation utterances to find out for degradation of the system's performance

A compelling problem for language pedagogues is teaching foreign languages to students so they can retain and use the language skills in real communicative situations. One way to help students learn these skills is to understand and improve current pedagogical approaches to languagelearning. New technology such as computer-assistedlanguagelearning (CALL) provides pedagogues with rich, multimedia environments for presenting instruction. At the same time, deciding what to present and how to organize the instruction in CALL provides a new challenge. In response to this problem, we discuss preliminary results of a research effort for developing an instructional design environment (IDE) that is uniquely tailored to the needs of developing foreign language instruction. Hypertext features in the IDE software are used to capture and organize into one coherent framework the corpora of theoretical, instructional, and content material that affects foreign language instruction.

computer assisted language learning (CALL) has attracted increasing interest in language teaching and learning. In the computer-supported learning environment, both pronunciation correction and expression modulation are certified to be essential for contemporary learners. However, while mispronunciation detection and diagnosis (MDD) technologies have achieved significant successes, speech expression evaluation is still relied on expensive and resources consuming manual assessment. In this paper, we proposed a novel multi-modal multi-scale neural network based approach for automatic speech expression evaluation in CALL. In particular, a multi-modal sparse auto encoder (MSAE) is firstly employed to make full use of both lexical and acoustic features, a recurrent auto encoder (RAE) is further employed to produce the features at different time scale and an attention-based multi-scale bidirectional long-short term memory (BLSTM) model is finally employed to score the speech expression. Experimental results using data collected from realistic airline broadcast evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving a human-level predictive ability with acceptable rate 70.4%.

Programs for computer-assistedlanguagelearning (CALL) are becoming more complex. On one hand, courseware designers develop programs of a more open-ended character, e.g. adventures, hypermedia courseware. On the other hand, courseware in the traditional drill and practice vein is more and more elaborate and offers extensive feedback to the learner. Developing this last type of courseware, in which feedback generally is based on an error analysis of a large group of learners, demands an enormous investment in time and energy. The question is whether this investment pays off: do learners indeed learn better by programs with a considerable amount of feedback? This question was addressed in a research project at the French Department of the University of Amsterdam. Students' reactions to feedback were studied in two ways. First, log files were analyzed containing the series of tasks-responses-feedback of each student. In addition, think aloud protocols were analyzed. The results from the log files, which were confirmed by the analysis of the think aloud protocols, show that there was no overall successful strategy. While some students made optimal use of the feedback provided, others seemed to avoid using it in several ways.

With the use of computer technologies in many fields, computer assisted language learning (CALL) has been playing an increasingly important role in the teaching of English. Multimedia do show their great potential and advantages in English teaching, bringing great convenience and power to English lessons, especially in enhancing the knowledge input and making the English classes interesting, lively. However, the above-mentioned advantages of using multimedia are based on the premise that multimedia are properly used. In the paper, good and bad effects of computer assisted language learning on English teaching are analyzed so that English teachers can make full use of computer in there teaching.

Despite the enormous potential of computer assisted language learning (CALL) in teaching and learning foreign language, no serious action has been taken to develop this phase of education at schools and universities in Iran. A group of 52 students were divided into two experimental and control groups. During the study, both groups were trained 15 grammar points and related examples. The result of data analysis showed that experimental group outperformed the control group. The result of study can have pedagogical implication for language teachers, in that they can use e-mail as a useful way of teaching large numbers of grammar points.

Faculty of languages and linguistics at university of Malaya in Malaysia has invested substantially to introduce students to computer-based languagelearning materials and to integrate technology into existing curriculum. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of students towards use of computer-assistedlanguagelearning (CALL). Data was collected from 100 students using a survey questionnaire. Findings of this study indicated that students had moderate attitudes towards CALL. Moreover, study results indicated that perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and subjective norms were significant predictors of computer attitudes. Implications for student training and suggestion for further research were provided.
