The rapid advancement of digital technologies has significantly influenced the landscape of language learning, introducing innovative tools and methodologies to enhance educational experiences. Among these developments, the integration of artificial intelligence and chatbot technology in language education offers a unique approach to teaching less commonly taught languages. This paper introduces "DarijaGenie," an early version of a task-based, multimodal chatbot system designed to facilitate the learning of Moroccan Arabic. Characterized by its spoken nature, non-standard structure, and the scarcity of its resources, Darija presents distinct challenges for learners. DarijaGenie aims to address these challenges by leveraging natural language processing and artificial intelligence to simulate real-life scenarios, providing users with an interactive platform for practical language learning.

Many children in South Africa cannot read for comprehension. This finding came from a recent international reading literacy study in which South Africa was placed last out of all 50 countries who participated [12]. During the study, it was pointed out that 75% of the learners participating came from disadvantaged backgrounds, a contributing factor to the overwhelming majority of Grade 4 learners that had already been deprived of proper school instruction. The development of automatic oral assessment applications could potentially alleviate this tragedy. A core component required by such foreseen software solutions is automatic pronunciation error detection (APED). Such APED capable of evaluating the speech produced by school learners in turn requires the development of local language child speech recognition (CSR) to succeed. CSR system development in the South African context may be attempted by refining adult pre-trained models. To this end, the paper provides a detailed breakdown of child data sets as well as reading assessment categories used to build and evaluate APED. While it is possible to select APED thresholds that do not penalise sentences read correctly, the more subtle reading disfluencies remained challenging to identify.

Italian speakers learn lexical stress of German morphologically complex words

Italian speakers tend to stress the second component of German morphologically complex words such as compounds and prefix verbs even if the first component is lexically stressed. To improve their prosodic phrasing an automatic pronunciation teaching method was developed based on auditory feedback of prosodically corrected utterances in the learners' own voices. Basically, the method copies contours of F0, local speech rate, and intensity from reference utterances of a German native speaker to the learners' speech signals. It also adds emphasis to the stress position in order to help the learners better recognise the correct pronunciation and identify their errors. A perception test with German native speakers revealed that manipulated utterances significantly better reflect lexical stress than the corresponding original utterances. Thus, two groups of Italian learners of German were provided with different feedback during a training session, one group with manipulated utterances in their individual voices and the other with correctly pronounced original utterances in the teacher's voice. Afterwards, both groups produced the same sentences again and German native speakers judged the resulting utterances. Resynthesised stimuli, especially with emphasised stress, were found to be a more effective feedback than natural stimuli to learn the correct stress position. Since resynthesis was obtained without previous segmentation of the learners' speech signals, this technology could be effectively included in computer assisted language learning software. Spoken language understanding (SLU) in human machine conversational systems is the process of interpreting the semantic meaning conveyed by a user's spoken utterance. Traditional SLU approaches transform the word string transcribed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system into a semantic label that determines the machine's subsequent response. However, the robustness of SLU results can suffer in the context of a human-machine conversation-based language learning system due to the presence of ambient noise, heavily accented pronunciation, ungrammatical utterances, etc. To address these issues, this paper proposes an end-to-end (E2E) modeling approach for SLU and evaluates the semantic labeling performance of a bidirectional LSTM-RNN with input at three different levels: acoustic (filterbank features), phonetic (subphone posteriorgrams), and lexical (ASR hypotheses). Experimental results for spoken responses collected in a dialog application designed for English learners to practice job interviewing skills show that multi-level BLSTM-RNNs can utilize complementary information from the three different levels to improve the semantic labeling performance. An analysis of results on OOV utterances, which can be common in a conversation-based dialog system, also indicates that using subphone posteriorgrams outperforms ASR hypotheses and incorporating the lower-level features for semantic labeling can be advantageous to improving the final SLU performance.

Comparing different approaches for automatic pronunciation error detection

One of the biggest challenges in designing computer assisted language learning (CALL) applications that provide automatic feedback on pronunciation errors consists in reliably detecting the pronunciation errors at such a detailed level that the information provided can be useful to learners. In our research we investigate pronunciation errors frequently made by foreigners learning Dutch as a second language. In the present paper we focus on the velar fricative /x/ and the velar plosive /k/. We compare four types of classifiers that can be used to detect erroneous pronunciations of these phones: two acoustic-phonetic classifiers (one of which employs Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)), a classifier based on cepstral coefficients in combination with LDA, and one based on confidence measures (the so-called Goodness Of Pronunciation score). The best results were obtained for the two LDA classifiers which produced accuracy levels of about 85-93%. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The role of social presence in learner-centered communicative language learning using synchronous computer-mediated communication: Experimental study

This study aimed to clarify the relationship between media, learners' perception of social presence. and output in communicative learning using synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC). In this study, we developed four types of SCMC: videoconferencing (image and voice), audioconferencing (voice but no image), text chat with image (image but no voice), and plain text chat (no image and no voice). Each system allows learners to be conscious of and utter a target formulaic expression. I investigated the effect of each system on psychological perception and productive output as well as the relationship between perception and output. The results show that image and voice promote consciousness of natural communication and relief, while a text-mediated system enhances confidence in grammatical accuracy. In order to clarify the relationship between media, affective side, and output, path analysis was conducted using SPSS Amos 7.0. The results indicated that voice communication strongly affects both learners' affective side and output. The existence of a partner's image enhances the consciousness of natural communication, which leads to a number of self-corrections, an aspect of learning performance. However, voice communication has a negative effect on confidence in grammatical accuracy. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Neclle: Network-based communicative language-learning environment focusing on communicative gaps

This paper focuses on the problem of language transfer in foreign language learning. The transfer often leads to a communicative gap, which is caused by the difference between a learner's mother language (ML) and the target language (TL). This paper first analyzes the semantic relations between the ML and the TL. Then it proposes a CGM (Communicative Gap Model) because of the meaning difference between both languages. We have developed a computer assisted language-learning system called Neclle (Network-based Communicative language-learning Environment) in order to support foreign language learning through communication using a text based chat tool. Neclle has a software agent called Ankle (Agent for Kanji learning), which observes the conversation between a learner and a native speaker, looks up a communicative gap in the learner's utterance automatically according to CGM, the student model and the word dictionary of both languages, intervenes into the conversation, and gives an instruction for bridging the gap. Then, the learner can not only be aware of the gap but also acquire its cultural background from the native speaker. In our case study, Chinese students used Neclle for Japanese language learning. Japanese language had incorporated with Chinese kanji but the meaning of a kanji sometimes differed between two languages. Therefore, the Chinese learners who want to study Japanese language have to pay much attention to the meaning gap between Chinese and Japanese language. In the evaluation of Neclle, nine Chinese students talked with Japanese students about three topics with Neclle for 1 h 30 min. A new formant feature and its application in Mandarin vowel pronunciation quality assessment

In order to improve the Mandarin vowel pronunciation quality assessment, a nox/el formant feature was proposed and applied to formant classification for Chinese Mandarin vowel pronunciation quality evaluation. Formant candidates of each frame were plotted on the time-frequency plane to form a bitmap, and its Gabor feature was extracted to represent the formant trajectory. The feature was then classified by using GMM model and the classification posterior probability was mapped to pronunciation quality grade. The experiments of comparing the Gabor transformation based formant trajectory feature with several other kinds of traditionally used features show that with this method, a human-machine scoring correlation coefficient （CC） of 0.842 can be achieved, which is better than the result of 0.832 by traditional speech recognition techniques. At the same time, considering that the long-term information of formant classification and the short-term information of speech recognition technique are complementary to each other, it is investigated to combine their results with linear or nonlinear methods to further improve the evaluation performance. As a result, experiments on PSK show that the best CC of 0.913, which is very close to the correlation of inter-human rating of 0.94, is gotten by using neural network.

Blending foreign language learning with key competences. Does e-learning do the trick?

Numerous benefits and advantages of different forms of CALL, blended learning in particular, offer a considerable boost for academic foreign language teaching with competences treated as essential learning outcomes measured by means of such indicators as the growth of the level of mastery of language skills (in particular listening, reading and writing), which make up the ability to communicate in a foreign language (the Council of Europe's second key competence). Research shows e-learning considerably improves the effectiveness of competence-oriented educational efforts. To this end the author devised an e-learning course English for Law and incorporated it in his English teaching practice at university. The e-course integrated with traditional classes allowed to achieve some promising teaching results especially as they went beyond developing only a foreign language competence. With the holistic approach taken, the results corresponded with the development of other key competences, especially learning to learn.

A statistical-based decision for arabic pronunciation assessment

The aim of a computer assisted language learning (CALL) system is to improve the language skills of learners. Such systems often include, grammar and vocabulary components, while the pronunciation learning seems to be the hardest step in language learning process. Little attention has been paid to this aspect among the required ones in CALL systems. In pronunciation learning context, the learner would like to know if its pronunciation is good or bad. In the case where the pronunciation is bad, it will be suitable if some advices are given to him. The goal of this work is an early detection of pupils with reading difficulties and in the issue of decision whether their pronunciation is good or not is our particular interest. For this purpose, we consider the answer to this question as a classification problem and we use a statistical approach to make a decision;this approach allows us to pursue the investigation concerning the pronunciation of every phoneme in the word or in the sentence.
