Mispronunciation detection is an important component in computer assisted language learning (CALL) system. In this work, we introduce an efficient GLDS-SVM based detection method, which is successfully used in language and speaker identification systems, and combine it with traditional methods. The main ideas include: extended MFCC features with normalized formant trajectory information, and then propose a novel multi-model strategy for model training to make full use of samples and solve the problem of data unbalance, finally combine GLDS-SVM method with UBM-GMM system to further improve the performance. Experiments show that GLDS-SVM is highly efficient than traditional RBF-SVM, and the fused system can achieve a significant relative improvement of 17.5% in EER reduction, compared with the baseline UBM-GMM system.

In today's globalized world being able to communicate in English is crucial to many people. computer assisted pronunciation training (CAPT) systems can help students achieve English proficiency by providing an accessible way to practice, offering personalized feedback. However, phone-level pronunciation scoring is still a very challenging task, with performance far from that of human annotators. In this paper we compare and present results on the Spanish subset of the L2-ARCTIC corpus and the new Epa-DB database, both containing non-native English speech by native Spanish speakers and intended for the development of pronunciation scoring systems. We show the most frequent errors in each database and compare performance of a state-of-the-art goodness of pronunciation (GOP) system. Results show that both databases have similar error patterns and that performance is similar for most phones, despite differences in recording conditions. For the EpaDB database we also present an analysis of the errors per target phone. This study validates the EpaDB collection and annotations, providing initial results and contributing to the advancement of a challenging low-resource task.

In this paper we describe the research that was carried out and the resources that were developed within the DISCO (Development and Integration of Speech technology into COurseware for language learning) project. This project aimed at developing an ASR-based CALL system that automatically detects pronunciation and grammar errors in Dutch L2 speaking and generates appropriate, detailed feedback on the errors detected. We briefly introduce the DISCO system and present its design, architecture and speech recognition modules. We then describe a first evaluation of the complete DISCO system and present some results. The resources generated through DISCO are subsequently described together with possible ways of efficiently generating additional resources in the future.

Dialectal Arabic (DA) poses serious challenges for Natural language Processing (NLP). The number and sophistication of tools and datasets in DA are very limited in comparison to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and other languages. MSA tools do not effectively model DA which makes the direct use of MSA NLP tools for handling dialects impractical. This is particularly a challenge for the creation of tools to support learning Arabic as a living language on the web, where authentic material can be found in both MSA and DA. In this paper, we present the Dialectal Arabic Linguistic learning Assistant (DALILA), a Chrome extension that utilizes cutting-edge Arabic dialect NLP research to assist learners and non-native speakers in understanding text written in either MSA or DA. DALILA provides dialectal word analysis and English gloss corresponding to each word.

Indigenous language revitalization, promotion, and education: function of digital technology

Within the last two decades, there has been increased interest in how technology supports Indigenous language revitalization and reclamation efforts. This paper considers the effect technology has on Indigenous language learning and teaching, while conceptualizing how language educators, speakers, learners, and technology users holistically understand, skillfully apply and communicate creative and balanced technological solutions that are based on understanding of contextual factors. A total of 80 participants representing at least 47 Indigenous languages completed a survey in 2009 representing individuals, organizations, and institutions that serve one or more Indigenous language communities across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Guatemala, Peru, Greenland, Mexico, Bolivia, French Polynesia (Marquesas Islands and Tuamotu Islands), and Russia. The data reveal the functions digital technology has in Indigenous language revitalization, which include (1) positive and supportive roles (2) concerns, constraints, and tensions, and (3) Indigenous language education. Regardless of the size of the community, opportunities for using technology in Indigenous language revitalization efforts are shaped by linguistic, cultural, social, economic, environmental, and technological factors as expressed in the technacy framework for language revitalization. Findings indicate that technology has wide and mostly positive applications in language learning and teaching, that the benefits of those applications remain consistent across communities regardless of size and geographic location, and that new and innovative uses of technology are being adopted to support language revitalization efforts. Overall, the study underscores the importance of context in making grounded decisions about technology as a component of contemporary language revitalization efforts.

English listening comprehension is always bewildering for language learners. English language students are generally not taught to recognize English in reduced forms (contractions) in verbal exchanges;they also lack opportunities for practicing listening exercises in reduced forms of English vocabulary. This study developed a film based vocal language learning system working with English reduced forms, thus enabling students to learn English in reduced forms. The film includes an abundance of learning situations, which are easily learned from. Within this system, the learner can import subtitles from English films by themselves. The system also automatically marks reduced English forms in verbal conversations, and offers many example sentences for listening exercises. The system uses subtitles as the source of examinations for students after completing course sections. The system can generate items from movie subtitles automatically, as well as evaluating learner performance. This study probes the effectiveness of the aforementioned learning system as well as the user's attitude and satisfaction with the system. The results show that the learning system of English reduced forms in verbal conversations had a positive effect on the experimental group's learning which was significantly better than traditional film systems without English reduced form subtitles used by the control group. Hence this system benefits students learning English contractions. In English listening tests, the results of experimental group were significantly higher than the control group. The results of post-course survey showed positive satisfaction by system users. All students using the system reported a positive attitude after using the system. The system can be improved by enhancing the interfaces which broadcast the films and subtitles as well as increasing the course and experimental time periods.

There has been an increasing interest in language Massive Open Online Courses (LMOOCs) in terms of research and number of courses offered, shown by the monographic volumes and systematic reviews that have been published so far. This study aims to consolidate this emerging field by exploring research from 2019 to 2021. The origin of scientific contributions, methodologies used, and the most discussed topics have been considered. Results show that the distribution of papers remain concentrated in a few countries and universities -such as Spain, UK and China, which are producing progressively more high-impact research. Also, the consistent use of mixed methods has implied the optimisation of available data and allowed for more fine-grained conclusions. Lastly, it has been proved that LMOOC publications are evolving to a more mature phase, with an increase of conceptual papers that has contributed to consolidate core theoretical foundations. It can be then said that LMOOC research has reached its coming of age and is now considered a well-established sub-field of computer assisted language learning, with substantial practice and high-quality scholarly publications.

A mobile-assisted synchronously collaborative translation-annotation system for English as a foreign language (EFL) reading comprehension

This research introduced mobile devices into an intensive reading course and allowed functions that are usually found only in the language laboratory to be easily and flexibly utilized in the general classroom. To enhance and improve the reading comprehension of English as a foreign language (EFL) readers, a computer-assisted-language-learning (CALL) system for use on PDAs, integrating an instant translation mode, an instant translation annotation mode, and an instant multi-users shared translation annotation function was developed to support a synchronously intensive reading course in the normal classroom. Experiments were conducted to analyze the usage of the system, including the attitude and satisfaction of users. Moreover, the study determined the optimum number of users in each group for the system to work most efficiently, and for students to improve their reading comprehension. Experimental results indicated that those students who were grouped into twos, threes, and fours had significantly higher levels of comprehension than individual students, but those grouped into fives did not. Overall, on average around 70% of the students agreed that the system was useful, 75% of the students agreed that the system was easy to use, and 66% of the students perceived satisfaction with the system. The user intentions were also further analyzed in light of a path analysis method.
