The state of Virginia requires science Standards of learning tests to be conducted as a graduation requirement as well as a measure of teacher performance. In an attempt to increase graduation rates, the state has adopted an expedited retake policy allowing certain students to retest if their scores were close to passing but fell short. No requirement, however, was given as to the means of remediation that the students must attend in order to retest. This quantitative study examined the effectiveness of three instructional strategies in improving student performance during the retest. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was used to examine two variables-inquiry-based instruction and computer-based instruction-and their effectiveness in raising SOL scores for students in the remediation program compared to the traditional method of direct instruction utilized in an urban southeastern Virginia public school district.

computer based learning (CBL) has proven to be an efficient method of delivering engineering courses contents. One major merit of CBL techniques is their adequacy for remote learning. Another advantage is achieved when CBL is employed to deliver practical knowledge. The work presented in this paper attempts to combine the aforementioned advantages. Control systems courses pose a challenge to engineering instructors and students. The main challenge is the lack of practical sense within the plethora of mathematical equations and techniques used to explain a given system model and its controller design. Thus far, a remote CBL system has been designed and developed for an undergraduate control systems course laboratory. The CBL system is based on teaching the principles of PID controller tuning of a naturally unstable system;Inverted Pendulum. A cart-inverted-pendulum has been designed and developed with two feedbacks and PID controllers. The first feedback provides linear position control of the cart, while, the second feedback provides angular position control of the pendulum. The system also consists of a LabVIEW code developed on a local PC to control the experimental hardware. LabVIEW web publishing tool and web server were used to allow and manage remote access of students wishing to perform the experiment via the Internet. The GUI presents the theoretical concepts to students supplemented by graphical plots of the system response. The experimental hardware is an embedded system developed using Arduino UNO to control the inverted pendulum and a web camera allowing the students to watch a video stream of the process in real-time. The developed system allowed for local and remote access and control of the inverted pendulum using the Internet.

Role of personality in computer based learning

With the rapid growth of technology enhanced learning, new mediums for learning have emerged. One of these mediums is computer based learning where the main concern is how to design a computer based learning system which takes into consideration the learners' differences. Personality is considered as one of the most critical sources of individual differences. This study investigates how personality differences-within learners can affect computer based learning, through a comprehensive review of the literature. The highlighted results from the obtained nineteen studies are: (a) the most referred to personality model in computer based learning is MBTI;(b) personality traits affect how learners prefer learning content and learning approach like collecting information, communicating with instructor and peer, study behavior, acting and performing;(c) a new model of personality variables should be considered in computer based learning by taking all interested researchers and practitioners into accounts;and (d) the traditional questionnaire approach which is still the pre-dominant method to identify the learner's personality;and this needs to be changed with new potential of big data and learning analytics. Furthermore, this study presents a new implicit approach using learning analytics instead of questionnaire-based approach to identify the learner's personality. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a computer-based module for wrist arthroscopy to which a group of experts could consent. The need for such a module was assessed with members of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (EWAS). The computer-based module was developed through several rounds of consulting experts on the content. The module's learning enhancement was tested in a randomized controlled trial with 28 medical students who were assigned to the computer-based module group or lecture group. The design process led to a useful tool, which is supported by a panel of experts. Although the computer based module did not enhance learning, the participants did find the module more pleasant to use. Developing learning tools such as this computer-based module can improve the teaching of wrist arthroscopy skills. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.

How's the Air Out There? Using a National Air Quality Database to Introduce First Year Students to the Fundamentals of Data Analysis

Chemistry is increasingly data centric and the undergraduatecurriculumneeds to adjust to keep up. To address this, we created the Air Quality Activity, a new first-year undergraduate activitywhere students use Microsoft Excel to analyze a unique subset of atmosphericozone (O-3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measurementsfrom the Canadian National Air Pollution Surveillance (NAPS) *** this activity students develop their numeracy, graphicacy,and proficiency with Excel. Moreover, students are equipped with afoundational approach to data analysis they can leverage throughouttheir studies. To make this activity possible, we developed an open-sourcewebbook detailing pertinent Excel operations for first-year students,and an interactive web-app for the generation, distribution, and explorationof NAPS data. Students were excited by the analysis of real-worldchemical phenomena in comparison to traditional first-year lab exercisesand appreciated their acquired Excel skills. The Air QualityActivity is readily adaptable for both virtual and in-personimplementation, entirely open-source, and readily deployable at anyinstitution wishing to teach data analysis in a chemistry context.

Solution equilibria diagrams are excellent tools for understanding chemical speciation in multireaction chemical systems. They are usually plotted using software packages that efficiently perform advanced calculations, giving the possibility to graphically visualize thermodynamic and composition information. However, this approach frequently leaves the students with a poor understanding of the underlying theory. In this work, a simple method that uses extended Ringbom's side reaction coefficients, named the Method of Extended Ringbom's Coefficients (MERC), is proposed for plotting distribution and predominance diagrams using Excel, such that when the formation of mixed ligand and polynuclear species is considered, the mass balance equation is solved by applying a simple numerical recipe based on Newton-Raphson's technique using circular references. If precipitation reactions are considered, then a corrected conditional solubility is used to study chemical equilibria in saturated or unsaturated solutions, by simply using the IF conditional function of Excel. The wide scope of this methodology is shown by studying the speciation and analysis of the redox properties of the Cu-(II)/Cu-(I)/Cu system in aqueous media in the presence of ammonia, thiosulfate ions, and EDTA under different multibuffered conditions. Also, the learning achievements of two examples of the application of MERC in the classroom are discussed.

Characterization of Chromatographic Peaks with Excel

A Spreadsheet Excel application for chromato-graphic peak characterization is described in this article. Data are exported from HPLC specific program to an Excel file with macros to perform basic calculations as retention time, height, and area of the peaks. From these values, peak resolution, asymmetry, or theoretical plates are calculated and presented in a clear and direct mode. The application may be used as a teaching tool of chromatographic concepts when no HPLC equipment is available. Besides the education purpose, the application may be used for accurate measurement of peak resolution or theoretical plate number by non-usual methods when these features are not included in commercial peak integration software

A study was conducted using the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) intelligent tutoring system (ITS) software and an Army Schoolhouse course. Existing materials were provided and used to create 9 computer-based GIFT lessons that included adaptive tutoring versions of the materials. These lessons included a Pre-Test, 7 content lessons (on the areas of Detect, Engage, and Assess), and a Post-Test. Six participants completed the Pre-Test, Post-Test, and all lessons. Overall Post-Test scores were significantly higher than Pre-Test scores, and remediation also had a positive impact on PostTest scores. This study demonstrates that completing self-paced ITS lessons prior to initial class instruction can lead to positive learning impacts prior to the start of a class. © 2023 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Drawing on research conducted by Mayer (2020), this article examines evidence-based principles for how to design effective instructional videos and shows how they are grounded in cognitive theories of learning and instruction. Principles include multimedia (present words and graphics), coherence (avoid extraneous material in slides and script), signaling (highlight key material), redundancy (do not add captions that repeat the spoken words), spatial contiguity (place printed text next to corresponding part of graphic), temporal contiguity (present corresponding visual and verbal material at the same time), segmenting (break a complex slide into progressively presented parts), pre-training (provide pre-training in the names and characteristics of key concepts), modality (present words as spoken text). personalization (use conversational language), voice (use appealing human voice), image (do not display static image of instructor's face), embodiment (display gesturing instructor), and generative activity (add prompts for generative learning activity).
