learning is a family affair at ICI: Chemical giant expands computer-based courses

Purpose Describes how chemical company ICI has expanded the scope and coverage of e‐learning, to open up learning opportunities to more of its 34,000 employees and their families worldwide. Design/methodology/approach Sketches the history of e‐learning at ICI and describes some of the options currently available. Highlights the value of Search Now, a learn‐on‐demand system that enables learners to type in a training query and receive an instant learning activity. Findings Shows that there are still only 4,700 registered e‐learning users at ICI, although the number is steadily expanding. Emphasises the importance of e‐learning in preparing employees for instructor‐led training. Practical implications Provides companies with ideas for gaining extra value from their e‐learning systems. Originality/value Cites e‐learning in the context of family‐friendly policies and of learning‐on‐demand.

Online learning dialogues in learning through work

Purpose - The aim of this paper is to describe a study of online, asynchronous dialogues between tutors and nine work-based postgraduate learners on learning through work (LtW) programmes. Design/methodology/approach - Adopting a constructivist perspective and using a qualitative approach, 670 messages were segmented into semantic units and categorised by activity and content. Analysis borrowed from content and discourse approaches and categories were grounded in the data. Findings - Online exchanges were found to mirror those of effective face-to-face learning encounters. Learners asked questions, reported on their progress and plans, sought and gave feedback, and disclosed personal information and feelings. Tutors gave direct answers, advised and made suggestions, explained and elaborated, offered signposting and referral and provided feedback. Dialogue content was categorised as administrative/organisational, technical, affective, social, academic or relating to programme design. Research limitations/implications - Learners embarking on undergraduate level study may raise different issues from those working at postgraduate level. Practical implications - The individual categories and the framework as a whole may help new online tutors to anticipate and prepare for their role. Originality/value - The study is unusual in focusing on one-to-one online dialogues between university tutors and work-based learners. The unique contribution is a hierarchical analytical framework of dialogue topics in which "hard" and "soft" topics underpin academic dialogue.

Department for work and pensions gets leaner, fitter and more focussed HR: Shared-service centers, self-serve and HR business partners (HRBPs) among major changes

Purpose – Describes how HR at the British Government's Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) became leaner, fitter and more focused after the department was required to reduce employee numbers from 131,000 in 2003 to 101,000 in 2008, with a further 10,000 being moved to front‐line services. Design/methodology/approach – Explains that the 50,000 line managers in the businesses were required to be more involved with HR issues and decisions, and required the skills and information to be able to do this effectively. A need to review the overall learning and development (L&D) strategy to meet this scale of change became evident. Traditional classroom‐based training methods would not enable the DWP to achieve what was required flexibly, efficiently or cost‐effectively. Findings – Shows how the DWP embraced technology to deliver self‐managed learning to 50,000 line managers, 120 HR business partners and 2,500 L&D specialists. The organization dramatically changed HR delivery in four months (from brief to launch date) for 50,000 line manager and eight months for the 2,500 strong L&D community. DWP expanded its skill set by sharing this vision and working with an external partner that could help it to deliver what it wanted, rather than what its internal tools allowed. With Academee's knowledge and expertise in learning portals, the DWP delivered the project on time and to budget. Practical implications – Investing in technology to streamline and standardize L&D across three core areas, along with breaking programmes down into modules for flexible learning, has enabled the L&D offering to be tailored to each individual. Originality/value – Gives a clear exposition of the benefits for HR and for the organization as a whole.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to recognize that individual learning styles must be taken into account in the instructional design template used in online education. The paper argues that when students' learning styles are identified, it is possible to define an appropriate context of learning. Design/methodology/approach - The paper identifies a set of instructional principles for online learning environments that are derived from multiple theories of learning with a consideration of different learning styles. The VARK questionnaire was used to determine learning styles of students who participated in two online courses. The VARK instrument identifies four distinct learning styles: visual (V);aural (A);reading/writing (R) and kinesthetic (K). These four dimensions are used to analyze the appropriateness of online learning structures. Findings - The paper identifies teaching strategies in online courses while recognizing the four learning styles. The paper concludes that the achievement of online learning can be improved by providing instruction in a manner consistent with each student's learning style. However, it is important to keep in mind that, even if a specific student learns best in a certain way, he or she should be exposed to a variety of learning experiences to become a more versatile online learner. Originality/value - The new result indicates that students with the auditory learning preference do not select online education as their first choice for learning. The combination of different techniques can make it possible for students with all types of learning styles to be successful in an online course. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Hilton highlights link between staff loyalty and e-learning

Purpose – The paper aims to examine an anonymous employee survey conducted by SkillSoft's client, Hilton International, in the summer of 2005. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents the results of the annual survey, which is part of an ongoing program to establish how Hilton's online learning portal, Hilton University, is being used and to find out how employees are applying the learning at work. Another important reason for the survey is to discover whether there is indeed a link between development opportunities and staff loyalty and retention. Findings – The paper demonstrates that 90 percent of respondents said they found Hilton University learning activities easily accessible, with almost three‐quarters of the opinion that learning opportunities specific to their needs could be located quickly. Around 85 percent ranked Hilton University as either good or very good and 90 percent of respondents were convinced that the resources they accessed through Hilton University helped them with their professional development. Some 74 percent agreed that management supported them through the learning process. From a management perspective, 64 percent of managers found it straightforward to monitor and support the learning process of individuals in their teams. Around 95 percent of respondents said they appreciated the opportunity Hilton was giving them to develop their knowledge. This figure gives credence to the theory that training benefits company‐employee relations: 98 percent went on to say that they would recommend Hilton University to colleagues. Practical implications – The paper backs the view that continuous professional development is an important factor in staff retention. Originality/value – The paper reports that 37 percent of respondents said that being offered development opportunities was “the most important” factor in them deciding to continue their career with Hilton. E-learning: The best training option?

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine e‐learning as a training option. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a review of an article on e‐learning which had feedback from 204 interviews with employees of various organizations. Findings – The paper finds that A total of 47 percent of the 204 people interviewed about e‐learning said they thought it suffered from an image problem and 50 per cent agreed that it would probably take up too much precious time. On the whole, the data suggest that e‐learning is an affordable and accessible option for training and development teams to consider, with almost all respondents saying they would recommend it. Originality/value – This paper is useful to those interested in implementing e‐learning as a training option.

Virtual learning communities as a vehicle for workforce development: a case study

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits and challenges of using a virtual learning community (VLC) as a vehicle for workforce development. This paper argues that VLCs provide a flexible vehicle for workforce development. However, workplace realities may lead to unexpected challenges for participants wanting exploit the flexibility of e-learning technologies. Design/methodology/approach - The case study is located in a strategic healthcare organisation in the UK. The study used a multi-method approach to develop a rich picture of the VLC. Data were collected from a variety of sources (programme evaluation questionnaires, learning logs, discussion group messages and VLE tracking system) and analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Findings - The findings indicate that while membership of a VLC offers new opportunities for collaboration, learning and working at a time and place that suits individuals it also offers many challenges. The following issues were identified as having an impact on effective participation in the VLC: motivation;time management;public/private boundaries;work/life balance;and access to ICT. Research limitations/implications - There are limitations in generalising from a particular case study. The use of a case study provides a depth to the study that helps to illuminate the experiences of individual e-learners. Practical implications - The findings have strategic implications for organisations planning to use VLCs to support workforce development. The study indicates the need for facilitators to enable participants to explore time and work/life balance issues. It highlights the importance of involving the managers of e-learners in the negotiations involved in establishing a VLC. Finally, the study identified that employers need to provide protected time for e-learners and that access to technology is an issue. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses three case studies to present experiences and lessons learned. Findings – The paper finds that if cultural and technological foundations are not in place, the e‐learning strategy will not succeed. Practical implications – The paper offers organizations wanting to adopt an e‐learning strategy first‐hand advice and guidance by demonstrating the lessons learned by early adopters. E-learner experiences: A lesson on in-house branding

Purpose - The purpose of this article is to highlight the importance of marketing an e-learning provision in-house in order that it should succeed. Design/methodology/approach - The study was based on 29 research case studies. Findings - E-learning itself has a somewhat negative image with a lot of people, and hence some companies have rebranded and renamed their e-learning provision to "disguise" it as something else for uptake to increase. Money invested in the technology and design will not correlate with success unless implementation includes substantial effort in marketing. Even then it is unlikely to be successful without top level support on an ongoing basis. Practical implications - It is important to promote the value of e-learning at the early stages and on a regular basis thereafter. Originality/value - Reflections of early adopters of e-learning highlight areas of success and difficulty in order to help other organizations to avoid the same pitfalls. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Understanding and combating the digital divide for single mother college students: A case study

Purpose – This case study examines the ways in which single mother college students experience the digital divide. It begins by identifying the primary challenges they face as they pursue a postsecondary degree in post‐welfare reform America. It also demonstrates how one program, computer access promoting retention and achievement (CAPRA), has helped bridge the digital divide for this particular student population. Design/methodology/approach – Data were drawn from a 2‐year ethnographic study that sought to examine the experiences of single mother college students in post‐welfare reform America. Research methods included in‐depth, semi‐structured interviews as well as participant observation. Findings – Single mother college students identified four primary challenges they encounter as they pursue a college degree: time constraints, child care, economics, and institutional climate. These challenges intersect with one another in ways that hinder single mother students’ access to the computing technologies that are central to their academic success. The CAPRA program has attempted to bridge the digital divide for this particular student population by developing a program that makes computers for long‐term loan. The development of the CAPRA program is discussed as well as its strengths and limitations. Originality/value – This case study attends to the experiences of an understudied population: single mother college students. It demonstrates the importance of attending to the social context when examining the digital divide. Only in doing so can we hope to bridge that divide in ways which are meaningful and appropriate to diverse populations.
