Design quality in building behavioral intention through affective and cognitive involvement for e-learning on smartphones

Purpose This study examines the effect of design quality (i.e. appearance, navigation, information and interactivity) on cognitive and affective involvement leading to continued intention to use the online learning application. Design/methodology/approach We assume that design quality potentially contributes to enhance the individual's involvement and excitement. An experimental prototype is developed for collecting data used to verify and validate the proposed research model and hypotheses. A partial-least-squares approach is used to analyze the data collected from the participants (n = 662). Findings Communication, aesthetic and information quality revealed to be strong determinants of both cognitive and affective involvement. However, font quality and user control positively influence cognitive involvement, while navigation quality and responsiveness were observed as significant indicators of affective involvement. Lastly, cognitive and affective involvement equally contribute to determining the continued intention to use. Research limitations/implications This study will draw the attention of designers and practitioners towards the perception of users for providing appropriate and engaging learning resources. Originality/value Prevalent research in the online context is focused primarily on cognitive and utilization behavior. However, these works overlook the implication of design quality on cognitive and affective involvement.

computer based learning (CBL) in teaching and learning process is becoming a phenomenon in the educational field. CBL serves to establish more effective learning situations than traditional teaching methods. However, research studies show that most teachers do not make use of CBL to contribute and further improve the quality of learning environments. This paper discusses the potential of CBL and its’ constrain regarding this issue which is focusing on the barriers of integrating the technology in the teaching and learning process among the Malaysian teachers and also in learning Mathematics.

Does Providing a Personalized Educational Game based on Personality Matter? A Case Study

While researchers have highlighted the importance of considering learner's personality as a personalization parameter in computer based learning, very few studies have really addressed this parameter in educational games. Therefore, this paper presents an educational game which models learner's personality, specifically introvert/extrovert dimension, to serve as a personalized game learning environment. Fifty one learners were randomly assigned to a control and an experimental group which learned with a non-personalized and a personalized version of the game respectively. The experimental results show that the personalized educational game did not have a significant impact on learners' motivation, while it did significantly decrease learners' cognitive load. Besides, the learners who learned with the personalized version of the game revealed a significant higher degree of perceived usefulness and intention to use the game than those who learned with the non-personalized version of the game. The findings of this study can be used by educators and game designers to adopt and develop personalized game learning environments based on learner's personality.

Communications between team members sent as messages about collaboration strategies during online game development were analysed to extract contributions to the discussion of their online activity and their reflections. The task was the collaborative development of online games by a team of university students. Their social media communications were classified into four functions: Proposal, Permission, Encouragement, and Acknowledgement based on the participant's frequency of contribution of reflections and the frequency of their communication activity. In the results, some significant relationships between participant's reflections and communication frequencies of the four categories were extracted in the later discussion cycles. Also, the appearance probabilities of communication activity in each of the four categories were calculated using Bayesian networks and the scores of participant's characteristics, such as personality and information literacy.

There is scientific evidence confirming the effectiveness of e-learning within resuscitation, however, there is not enough research on modern examination techniques within the scope. The aim of the pilot research is to compare the exam results in the field of Advanced Life Support in a traditional (paper) and interactive (computer) form as well as to evaluate satisfaction of the participants. A survey was conducted which meant to evaluate satisfaction of exam participants. Statistical analysis of the collected data was conducted at a significance level of a = 0.05 using STATISTICS v. 12. Final results of the traditional exam (67.5% +/- 15.8%) differed significantly (p < 0.001) from the results of the interactive exam (53.3% +/- 13.7%). However, comparing the number of students who did not pass the exam (passing point at 51%), no significant differences (p = 0.13) were observed between the two types exams. The feedback accuracy as well as the presence of well-prepared interactive questions could influence the evaluation of satisfaction of taking part in the electronic test. Significant differences between the results of a traditional test and the one supported by computer based learning system showed the possibility of achieving a more detailed competence verification in the field of resuscitation thanks to interactive solutions. Innovations aimed at eliminating mathematics-related bottlenecks in STEM curricula have received significant attention in the literature. Of these efforts, approaches offering alternative pathways through the developmental and pre-calculus course sequences are especially promising for improving access for underprepared students. The research described herein describes the integration of an Intelligent Tutoring Software (ALEKS Prep for Calculus) within a discipline-specific accelerated remedial mathematics course taught in the College of Engineering and computer Science at Wright State University. Namely, comparative outcomes from a controlled analysis involving two sections of the course differing only in the utilization of the ALEKS software module are described herein. Students in the experimental group experienced an average ALEKS placement score improvement of 27.00%, compared to 19.07% in the control group. This effect was especially pronounced for students entering the course at the developmental mathematics level.

Accelerated pre-matriculation mathematics remediation programs are a popular strategy for improving the placement levels of underprepared students. Although limited assessments of such programs have been reported in the literature, most work is focused either on immediate placement level improvement or longitudinal indicators of student success. While valuable, both techniques offer no insight regarding the learning progression of students while participating in the program, which is of tremendous value in optimizing program policy, such as determining the ideal number of contact hours. The research described herein proposes a first-order dynamic learning model for describing students' content acquisition process within accelerated remediation programs. Details regarding model formulation are presented within this work-in-progress paper. A brief evaluation of model efficacy is also conducted using data gathered from daily ALEKS learning assessments employed within a one-week remediation program for intending engineering students.

Exploring virtual mental practice in maintenance task training

Purpose - This paper aims to contribute to a general understanding of mental practice by investigating the utility of and participant reaction to a virtual reality maintenance training among underground coal mine first responders. Design/methodology/approach - Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) developed software to provide opportunities for mine rescue team members to learn to inspect, assemble and test their closed-circuit breathing apparatus and to practice those skills. In total, 31 mine rescue team members utilized OMSHR's BG 4 Benching Trainer software and provided feedback to the development team. After training, participants completed a brief post-training questionnaire, which included demographics, perceived training climate and general training evaluation items. Findings - The results overall indicate a generally positive reaction to and high perceived utility of the BG 4 benching software. In addition, the perceived training climate appears to have an effect on the perceived utility of the mental practice virtual reality game, with benchmen from mines with more positive training climates reporting greater perceived efficacy in the training's ability to prepare trainees for real emergencies. Originality/value - This paper helps to broaden current applications of mental practice and is one of the few empirical investigations into a non-rehabilitation virtual reality extension of mental practice. This paper also contributes to the growing literature advocating for greater usage of accurate and well-informed mental practice techniques, tools and methodologies, especially for occupational populations with limitations on exposure to hands-on training.

Research Administration has always been an important part of research organization, as it has the authority to boost research activities in selected fields. One of the challenges is, to identify those directions of research and those spontaneously popping up findings as early as possible, which will become of high importance for economy and research in the nearer or more distant future. Without good and well tested technical aids, this task may be impossible to meet. For many years, bibliometry was the method of first choice, to identify persons and groups of high impact (=quality?) research. The problem with using bibliometry is, that publishing is a slow process, resulting in measuring the quality and impact of those activities years back. It also results in support for those groups and individuals, who already had been supported for a long time, moving those researchers out of focus, who may come up with new, innovative findings. This paper gives an overview of research activities for measuring research quality beyond the bibliometric paradigm, but making use of big data, research data and computer based learning in Germany. It also gives some short but generally understandable introduction into the used technologies to enable the audience to discuss on the shown methodologies and techniques.

It is compulsory for first year biological science students at Queens University Belfast to complete a range of assessed, laboratory-based practicals in various scientific procedures including dissection. This study investigates student performance and attitudes when they have to complete a traditional dissection and a computer based learning (CBL) package (virtual dissection). One group of students had to complete the traditional dissection followed by a brief class test then the virtual dissection and the same test with the questions reordered. The second group of students were subjected to the same conditions the only difference being the order of the practicals, the virtual dissection first, followed by the traditional dissection. Test results showed that students performed better directly following the traditional practical approach in both groups despite pre-exposure to the CBL simulation in the second group. Student comments indicated that they preferred the traditional dissection and that it should not be replaced by the virtual practical. However, they also indicated that they enjoyed the different type of interactivity offered by the CBL package and would like to see both approaches used together to complement one another and reinforce their biological knowledge.
