Enriching adaptation in e-learning systems through a situation-aware ontology network

Purpose - The broader adoption of the internet along with web-based systems has defined a new way of exchanging information. That advance added by the multiplication of mobile devices has required systems to be even more flexible and personalized. Maybe because of that, the traditional teaching-controlled learning style has given up space to a new way of learning, which is more flexible and adequate to the learners needs. The purpose of this research is to go further into the semantic modeling of adaptive web based learning systems. Particularly, the paper focuses on those learning systems that consider in their definition the awareness of student's context in order to properly react to the student needs. Design/methodology/approach - In this paper the authors introduce a semantic model of the student context in terms of an ontology network. This semantic model is explored in order to detect the "current situation" of students when they are navigating into e-learning environments. The final objective is to enrich the adaptation functionality of e-learning environments, being able to evaluate context data from personal profile, learning domain and technological situation. Findings - In order to evaluate the semantic model defined, examples of detected situations are shown in accordance to specific e-learning scenarios. Originality/value - The paper covers definition of a flexible and modularized model by using ontology networks, which can be easily modified to incorporate new knowledge data, aiding the modeling of concepts from different learning environments.

Management education through e-learning in India: An empirical study

Purpose: E-learning is emerging as a potential delivery medium for education and training. This is evident from the increasing number of educational institutions and organizations adopting e-learning. In India, there has been an upsurge in the number of students going for management education. But, before management institutes embark on this e-learning journey, it is important to assess student readiness for this medium. The purpose of this paper is to examine the awareness levels, degree of familiarity and readiness to accept e-learning environment. Design/methodology/approach: Exploratory study and personal interviews were conducted to design the instrument which was administered to 240 students pursuing management education at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), which is a premier business school in India. A total of 154 duly filled questionnaires were used for data analysis. Factor analysis, cluster analysis and chi-square test were carried out to meet the objectives of the study. Findings: Factor analysis resulted in identification of five factors which were given names. Further, two clusters were identified among the respondents. To examine if the cluster profile varied in demographic variables, a chi-square test showed that none of the demographic variables are statistically related to the clusters. Research limitations/implications: The sample was comprised of students of a business school and therefore it may not be representative of all students studying business management. Second, since the sample comprised only 17 female students, generalization of results is difficult. Practical implications: The research holds relevance, as an assessment of prior exposure to technology and comfort level, attitude, behavior and motivation may determine the e-learners' readiness to adopt or not adopt this medium. Purpose - Electronic learning (e-learning) has gradually become an important part of university education. There is a trend among universities in Taiwan to offer more and more e-learning courses. The effectiveness of teaching or learning in an e-learning system can be quantified by multi-criteria measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching or learning in an e-learning system measures in linguistic preferences. Design/methodology/approach - A generalized quantitative evaluation model that considers both the interdependence among measures and the fuzziness of subjective perception is currently lacking in the literature. The results indicated that the fuzzy analytical network process is a simple, suitable, and effective method of identifying the primary measures that influence the effectiveness of e-learning, specifically in the context of interdependent measures and varying linguistic preferences. Findings - The most significant measures of e-learning effectiveness were the quality of the e-learning system and learner attractiveness. Enhanced usage of multimedia features can attract learner attention and may eventually increase learner attractiveness. Reducing the waiting time for learning materials to load may improve the quality of the system. Furthermore, the management should actively maintain and improve the responsiveness of instructors to learner inquiries. Originality/value - The main contributions of this study are twofold. First, the evaluation can be considered as a complex-dependence, hierarchical decision-making problem. This study contains a review of the literature and identifies 21 criteria and five aspects to measure e-learning system effectiveness. Second, this study integrates fuzzy set theory and the ANP to develop an evaluation model that prioritizes the relative weights of the proposed measures. The subject librarian and the virtual learning environment A study of UK universities

Purpose - The prevalence of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in higher education is well documented and has been promoted in the UK by government funded projects, but there has been little empirical research on the level of involvement of subject librarians with VLEs. A survey was designed to investigate how VLEs are affecting the work of subject librarians and to examine factors influencing their use in providing electronic information resources and developing information skills. The aim of this paper is to document the results Design/methodology/approach - A questionnaire was distributed electronically to a purposive sample of 132 subject librarians at seven UK universities. The instrument contained mainly closed specified response questions with a few open questions and a response rate of 43 per cent (n = 57) was achieved. Findings - Use of VLEs by subject librarians varies both between and within institutions. Factors affecting this include the subject area, co-operation of academic staff and attitudes of librarians towards technology-based teaching. JISC-funded projects have enabled better use of VLEs through the creation of re-usable learning objects and development of pedagogical understanding and skills. Recognition by academic staff of the teaching role of subject librarians has a critical impact on their involvement with VLEs. Research limitations/implications - The timeframe limited the scale of the study and size of the sample. The mainly quantitative approach limited the detail and depth of responses, but sufficient data were collected to establish broad trends, illuminate important factors and identify key issues. Originality/value - The paper provides empirical evidence of how VLEs are affecting the day-to-day activities of subject librarians and suggests areas where further research would be valuable.

Designing online problem representation engine for conceptual change

Purpose: This paper aims to describe the web-based scaffold dynamic simulation system (PRES-on) designed for pre-service teachers. Design/methodology/approach: The paper describes the initial design of a web-based scaffold dynamic simulation system (PRES-on) as a cognitive tool for learners to represent problems. For the widespread use of the PRES-on, the authors adopt the design experiment methodology to advance pre-service teachers' pedagogical applications of such engine for effective teaching and learning through the integration of PRES-on into the existing pre-service course. Findings: A proto-type of the system has been completed and the authors are in the process of enhancing its features. Ultimately, they will build in all the features stated in the literature review and integrate it into pre-service teachers' curriculum where the aim is to seek to understand its pedagogical applications. The current design only incorporated a quantitative component. The authors are in the process of embedding features that will allow users to build in qualitative representation and different level of question prompts that will facilitate users' cognitive processes. Originality/value: This study contributes to the growing interests among researchers and educators in using web-based technologies to foster deep learning. Being one of the first initiatives to develop a web-based scaffold dynamic simulation system for problem solving purpose, PRES-on will inform the understanding on how new technological developments could enhance learning in environments that involve multidisciplinary problem solving. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Nikon focuses e-learning on camera retailers: Cost-effective way of reaching large number of employees

Purpose: This paper aims to describe how highly visual and interactive e-learning, which demonstrates the features and benefits of Nikon cameras, is being used to train the employees of such major retailers as Jessops, Comet, Currys and Dixons. Design/methodology/approach: The paper explains the reasons for the training, the form it takes and the results it has achieved. Findings: The paper details how Nikon teamed up with e-learning specialist Kineo to design the training, which includes modules on: basic photography, including the use of cameras and the different types of picture people can take;the different camera ranges offered by Nikon, including a knowledge-checking quiz to reinforce the learning;and the Nikon range of lenses. Practical implications: The paper explains that a quiz, the Nikon product challenge, complements the e-learning, in which store staff can pit their Nikon camera knowledge against that of their colleagues and other staff throughout the UK. Social implications: The paper highlights the benefits of e-learning in the current economic climate, especially in the retail industry where releasing staff for traditional training is becoming increasingly difficult. Originality/value: The paper reveals how being able to provide an online training facility to the distribution channel, without the need to take staff out of the workplace, offers the chance of competitive advantage. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

computer-based learning enhanced by surprise: An evolutionary psychological model

Purpose The purpose of this research is to discuss a variety of empirical findings suggesting that surprise is positively related with enhanced memory recall. This opens the door for the assumption that surprising stimuli can be used in a controlled way to enhance learning. Design/methodology/approach A predictive model based on a Darwinian interpretation of this phenomenon is proposed. The model is coined CLEBS, which stands for “computer-based learning enhanced by surprise”. Findings A discussion on how the model can be tested is provided in the context of a finance-oriented Web-based learning task, where subjects learn about investment instruments such as stocks and bonds. Originality/value Important implications are discussed, including possible applications in a variety of areas of interest to organizations in general. © 2007, Emerald Group Publishing Limited

Gold online learning shines at Glasgow Council: Program cuts costs and improves efficiency

Purpose – This paper aims to describe a new e‐learning service for Glasgow City Council's 37,000 staff. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explains the reasons for the new e‐learning service, the form it takes and the advantages it has brought. Findings – The paper reveals that more than 17,000 courses have been implemented and that 26 generic e‐learning courses are available under the headings of communication and life skills, leadership, team development and personal development. Practical implications – The paper highlights how IT training, which cost £200 per head when delivered face to face, can now be completed at a desk with courses built internally at a cost per head of £2.20. Social implications – The paper details a 6 percent improvement in customer service since the introduction of Glasgow Cares, the city council's first internally built course. Originality/value – The paper reveals that the new e‐learning service is enabling the council to take more control of its training needs in‐house.
