At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the computer engineering curriculum is offered by the large, research-oriented Department of Electrical and computer engineering. The curriculum features a strong foundation in electrical engineering, an appropriate balance of computer hardware and software topics, a sequence of increasingly sophisticated design experiences, and a wide variety of electives. During the 20 years of its existence, the curriculum has undergone numerous minor changes, and further continual improvements are expected.

We determine the principal regularities of the stressed state of the surface layer of Al2O3-TiC ground ceramics under the action of combined loads. It is discovered that the force load compensates the thermal elastic strains but, at the same time, complicates the stressed state as compared with the action of loads of the same type. We clarify the role of combinations of structural elements, which form the surface of Al2O3-TiC ceramics, in the formation of unfavorable microstructural stress concentrators.

The regularities of the behavior of the intensity of stresses in the surface layer of ground Al2O3-TiC ceramics under the action of force loads are established on the basis of the main concepts of computer engineering. The formation of microstructural stress concentrators on the interface of the plastically deformed layer with the original ceramics is discovered. These concentrators may serve as causes of the initiation of in-service defects followed by the structural degradation of the ceramics.

And that is one of main aspects of a new research project called computer engineering Online. Within this joint project of five German universities an innovative study program for bachelor and master degrees will be implemented. This paper describes the conception for a technical architecture as well as the organizational challenges that come with shared responsibilities and combined expertise. Furthermore, methods of related projects at the University of Rostock are highlighted within the context of Lifelong Learning initiatives. Finally the potential of this project is discussed.

The goal is to develop and to publish an eLearning online study program for computer engineering in winter 2012. Referred to the blended learning strategy, the bigger part of the study program is offered by an online portal, which also provides the content for mobile devices (mLearning). In early 2011, the ACM and the IEEE computer Society (IEEE/CS) created the CE2004 Review Task Force (RTF) and charged it with the task of reviewing and determining the extent to which the document "Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in computer engineering," produced 2004 December 12 and known as CE2004 [1] required revisions. The RTF submitted a report to both societies in July of 2011. The report summarized a survey of academic and industry constituents conducted by the RTF. It recommended keeping the structure and the vast majority of the content of the original CE2004 document. However, it also recommended that contemporary topics should be strengthened or added while de-emphasizing other topics that appeared to be waning from the curricular mainstream of computer engineering. Additionally, the RTF recommended that the two societies form a joint special-purpose committee to update and edit the earlier document and to seek input and review from the computer engineering industrial and academic communities through presentations and workshops co-located at major conferences. The presenters of this special session were members of the 2011 RTF and two presenters were members of the original curricular task force from 2004. The presentation will provide insights in the RTF findings and thoughts on how a future computer engineering report might evolve.

In this paper we present an approach to teaching an introductory course in electrical and computer engineering to freshmen engineering students. The primary distinguishing characteristics of our approach include: providing information in an experiential context or "teaching-in-context": focusing on "black-box"-based hierarchical decomposition as an approach to understanding complex systems;and using piece-wise linear models for nonlinear elements as a way to develop intuition and understanding about the workings of circuits. The experiential context is provided by having students carry out series of laboratory exercises involving an exciting real-world electronic system. To date, we have developed laboratory exercises around a programmable robot and a Global Positioning System receiver. The greatest challenges in teaching an intellectually substantive course to entering freshmen are their lack, on average, of the mathematics and physics background that is taken for granted in most electrical and computer engineering courses. In this paper we demonstrate that by appropriate choice of material and presentation methods this challenge can be overcome.
