In the universities where undergraduate computer engineering (CE) and computer Science (CS) programs are offered, people often wrongly argue that the CE program should be offered under College of engineering instead of under the college where CS program is offered, this is mostly because they think CE program has "engineering" word in it. This school of thought does not realize that by this, it will take CE program apart from CS program, which will break the natural alliance of both of these programs. In this paper, this natural alliance of CE and CS programs is discussed, which gives strong argument that both CE and CS programs should be put together under the same college. To further support these arguments of putting CE and CS programs together, the best practices adopted in this regards by the top 10 universities in KSA, USA, UK and other European Universities are studied and results are provided to prove that CE and CS programs should be put together under the same college. Since, this is the current debate at AlBaha University in Saudi Arabia (KSA), therefore the case of AlBaha University is presented to settle the argument.

Making curricular decisions about critical content is fundamental to the operation of any academic unit in an institution with teaching responsibilities. The literature provides a wealth of information about how instructors plan for instruction and assessment but does not detail how instructors identify core concepts. This work in progress explores curricular decision-making from the instructor's perspective within the context of large-scale programmatic change in an Electrical and computer engineering department. We thematically analyzed existing data from a Content Representation (CoRe) instrument used to capture instructor pedagogical content knowledge and teaching strategies for big ideas in a curriculum. The emergent themes for teaching the big ideas concerning the faculty member's perceptions of student attitudes were: instructors valuing systems thinking (but not seeing it in students) and appreciating versatility/adaptability, as well as seeing students struggling with the value of concrete vs. abstract, and having a low tolerance for ambiguity. Teaching strategies were dominantly instructor-centered. This work in progress builds upon what is known about curricular decision-making while offering insights about faculty perceptions of content knowledge and strategies for teaching it.

While cornerstone and capstone courses teach "design" at the beginning and end of many computer engineering programs, a design gap is left in the sophomore and junior years. This paper describes the development and experiences of teaching five semesters of a specialized design course for a computer engineering program taught in the junior year. The course includes topics in software design patterns, multi-threaded applications, rudimentary user-interface design, embedded programming including sensor building and processing, and Zigbee-based wireless communications. The course is 2 semester credits (1-2-3), and includes a comprehensive project that requires students to build a tangible game or a game-like entertainment system. One key component of the course is the use of an open-source hardware platform called Arduino. The results are that students enjoy the course and are able to build integrated systems that incorporate design patterns, multi-threading, embedded programming and wireless communication in an effective manner within one semester.

In higher education, and particularly in the computer engineering disciplines, enhancing the learner's autonomy has become essential to meet the needs of the industry. This article reports the results of a research study that was conducted at the Universidad Nacional of Costa Rica with the aim to produce a curriculum shift from teacher-centered approaches towards student-centered approaches. The paper explores the readiness and willingness of students to have a level of control on their learning and the readiness of teachers to share control with them. Results about student participation in setting learning activities, in collaborative learning, and in self-and peer-assessment are discussed as fundamental aspects of learners' autonomy. The results highlight the importance of guiding students and faculty in the transition to an educational model that promotes the autonomy of students.

Given its pervasive use, and being a clear example of a computing system integrating hardware and software, Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is an important discipline in computer engineering undergraduate curricula. This paper presents a DSP course that, in addition to traditional lectures and exercises, uses Matlab to provide a limited level of laboratorytype practice. Also, the use of demonstrations during lectures is presented. The presentations help the students relate the theoretical concepts presented in class with the technical area of expertise they are most comfortable with, that of hardware, software and their integration. The demonstrations are implemented using a portable laboratory with a DSP board and a small oscilloscope. Presented results show how the use of demonstrations has increased the overall rating for the course and how stimulating it is found.

The so-called STEM subjects constitute a huge focus of interest from the academic world and from institutions, especially if we look at a gender perspective. If the case of computer engineering is analyzed, the results obtained are enormously surprising. In the 2018-19 academic year, female enrollments in computer engineering were only 1.08% of new female enrollments (in the case of Spain). And from this date it seems that the trend continues and even worsens. In the same way it happens in the countries around us. In this work we try to collect data, make a reflection and give some guidelines that help change the trend, starting from the scarce bibliography that is available in this regard.
