We can currently observe trend of gathering vast amounts of data about systems and users behaviour. Gathered data is analysed to get insight about behaviour of users and then to detect traits of users. Currently many different methods are used to analyse data and there is still no one best method for analysing different parameters of computersystems. We use non-linear methods to analyse gathered data because we assume that computer system is the non-linear one because of inter-program dependencies in current multi-program, multi-user operatingsystems. To best describe behaviour of entire system we choose number of interrupts per second as analysed variable because this value shows overall state of activity of programs being run on the system. We show that using recurrence plot can show some similarities in behaviour of system, and therefore can be used to detect similarities and differences in users behaviour.

The overall objective of the XtreemOS project is the design, implementation, evaluation and distribution of an open source Grid operating system (named XtreemOS) with native support for virtual organizations (VO) and capable of running on a wide range of underlying platforms, from clusters to mobiles. The approach we propose is to investigate the design of a Grid OS, XtreemOS, based on the Linux existing general purpose OS. A set of system services, extending those found in the traditional Linux, will provide users with all the Grid capabilities associated with current Grid middleware, but fully integrated into the OS. The underlying Linux will be extended as needed to support VOs spanning across many machines and to provide appropriate interfaces to the Grid OS services. Installed on each participating machine, the XtreemOS system will provide for the Grid what an operating system offers for a single computer: abstraction from the hardware, and secure resource sharing between different users. It would thus considerably ease the work, of users belonging to VOs by giving them (as far as possible) the illusion of using a traditional computer, and releasing them from dealing with the complex resource management issues of a Grid environment. By integrating Grid capabilities into the kernel, XtreemOS will also provide a robust, secure and easy to manage infrastructure for system administrators.

Studies focusing on Unix have shown that the vast majority of workstations and desktop computers remain idle for most of the time. In this paper we quantify the usage of main resources (CPU, main memory, disk space and network bandwidth) of Windows 2000 machines from classroom laboratories. For that purpose, 169 machines of 11 classroom laboratories were monitored over 77 consecutive days. Samples were collected from all machines every 15 minutes for a total of 583653 samples. Besides evaluating availability of machines (uptime and downtime) and usage habits of users, the paper assesses usage of main resources, focusing on the impact of interactive login sessions over resource consumptions. Also, resorting to Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) parameters of hard disks, the study estimates the average uptime per hard drive power cycle for the whole life of monitored computers. Our results show that resources idleness in classroom computers is very high, with an average CPU idleness of 97.9%, unused memory averaging 42.1% and unused disk space of the order of gigabytes per machine. Moreover, this study confirms the 2:1 equivalence rule found out by similar works, with N non-dedicated resources delivering an average CPU computing power roughly similar to N/2 dedicated machines. These results confirm the potentiality of these systems for resource harvesting, especially for grid desktop computing schemes.

The Time Warp operating System (TWOS) is a special purpose operating system that supports parallel discrete event simulations. Warpnet is a distributed network simulation designed for the purpose of benchmarking TWOS and providing data on the dynamics of information flow within a computer network. Preliminary benchmarking of Warpnet using a 32-node JPL/Caltech Mark III hypercube indicates of maximum speedup of 16.2 on 32 nodes. The data suggests that speedup would increase with diminishing returns up to some maximum speedup as the number of processors increased.

RENCO is a reconfigurable network computer based;on a Motorola 68360 processor for the conventional part, and four Altera Flex 10K130 or 10K250 FPGAs for the reconfigurable part. Therefore, the user has at his/her disposal up to one million programmable logic gates for executing his/her applications in a custom-made processor. RENCO runs a real-time operating system and a Java virtual machine.

New radar deployment or changes in existing posts dislocation may disturb the operation of radio communication systems in a given area. Thus, a decision on stations dislocation cannot be based solely on an analysis of the needs and advantages resulting from these dislocations but it should also contain an analysis of their negative impact on the existing electromagnetic environment. This paper presents a concept of applying specialized computer software to support radiolocation stations deployment on a territory radio communication systems are already operating.

The integration of drive-by-wire systems into the future generations of vehicles requires a reliable and safe processing of the driver's input requests. Many approaches presented in the last years apply specialised control units as well as communication systems not available in high quantities. This results in cost-intensive systems and increasing developmental periods, which proves to be harmful in the highly competitive automotive sector. Therefore, this article describes a safety relevant controller composed of commercial-off-the-shelf components designed for automotive applications. The article explains the hardware structure consisting of four electronic control units (ECU), connected via the controller area network, constituting a duo duplex system. To stop the communication of faulty ECUs an additional hardware unit is included in the controller system-the so-called BUSPWR block. Beside the hardware a detailed description of the redundancy management is given, which is the software operating the redundant controller. Safety relevant software components have to meet requirements of high software quality standards. For this reason the last part of the article concentrates on the software development process and its supporting tool chain. The application of automated code generation for safety relevant drive-by-wire systems is discussed in detail. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes NSF-supported work in parallelized computer system simulators being done in the Electrical and computer Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Our work is currently following two paths: (i) the FAST simulation methodology[9, 11, 10] that is capable of simulating complex systems accurately and quickly (currently about 1.2MIPS executing the x86 ISA, modeling an out-of-order superscalar processor and booting Windows XP and Linux) and (ii) the RAMP-White (White)[1, 22] platform that will soon be capable of simulating very large systems of around 1000 cores. We plan to combine the projects to provide fast and accurate simulation of multicore systems.
At the beginning of their studies the majority of freshmen are overcharged in the transition from high school to academic education. The biggest continual problems appear in mathematics for engineering students or nat...
