Preparing Malaysian vocational and technology teachers to integrate computer technology in teaching vocational and technology subjects

A study was conducted in three selected states in Malaysia to determine the preparedness of vocational and technology teachers to integrate computer technology in their classrooms. The study showed that teachers did not have a high level of general knowledge about computers (mean = 6.3, sd. = 2.97). They were not very knowledgeable in some computer software. They thought that they were not skillful in using computer software such as electronic spreadsheet (57.1%), word-processing and desktop publishing (50.8%), and database management (67.9%). Almost two-thirds of the respondents cannot do programming. Realizing that they did not have the necessary knowledge and skills, the majority of the teachers would like to attend training in using computers for instruction. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Girls teach themselves, and boys too: Peer learning in a computer-based design and construction activity

In this study, we investigated the use of female students as peer experts in a workshop introducing an interactive, computer-based learning environment called LEGO/Logo. In LEGO/Logo, children design, construct and program computer-controllable machines using specialized parts such as motors, sound elements, and sensors. The eighty-five students who participated in the study attended 6th grade (age 12) at a middle-class elementary school in the United States. The LEGO/Logo workshops were approximately 15 hours each, and the students worked primarily in pairs or groups of three. The findings indicate that the students were successful in building a wide range of LEGO/Logo machines, from simple to complex models, and that the peer teachers were utilized as experts by the other students and benefited from this experience. Certain gender-related differences were observed in the students' interactions and in working with the LEGO/Logo system. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

In this article, an overview is presented of the growth of work in Human-computer interaction (HCI) over the last 40 years. Inevitably much must be omitted, hut the referenced papers may fill some of the gaps. Various formative influences and contributing disciplines are noted. Aspects of research and human factors knowledge are prominent, but attention is also given to technology, applied problems, and design for usability. Finally, after summarizing the growth in three age-group partitions, some of the major threads of development are noted under the heading of continuities from the past and perspectives into the future.

Evaluating a multimedia authoring tool

We present a detailed case study of a computer scientist learning and using the Cognitive Walkthrough (CW) technique to assess a multimedia authoring tool. We then compare the predictions produced by the analysis to the usability problems actually found in empirical usability fasts. In this case, the concepts of Cognitive Walkthrough were learnable by the analyst who had little prior training in psychology or Human-computer Interaction, flexible enough for the analyst to make reasonable modifications to the technique to fit the design situation, but disappointingly ineffective in predicting actual user problems, We present several hypotheses about the cause of low effectiveness, which suggest that additional knowledge, currently tacit in CW-experts, could be used to improve the technique, in addition, the emergent picture of the process this evaluator went through to produce his analysis sets realistic expectations for other novice analysts who contemplate learning and using Cognitive Walkthroughs.

Digital animation: New conditions for children's development in play-based setting

There is increasing recognition of digital childhoods [Danby, S., Fleer, M., Davidson, C., & Hatzigianni, M. (Eds.). (2018). Digital childhood. Amsterdam: Springer] and a corresponding body of research into young child's engagement with digital devices across a broad range of contexts [Marsh, J. A., Plowman, L., Yamada-Rice, D., Bishop, J., & Scott, F. (2016). Digital play: a new classification. Early Years, 36, 242-253. doi:10.1080/09575146.20161167675]. What is missing from the literature is an understanding of if and how these devices, when used with animation apps in play-based programs, change pre-school practices and the developmental conditions of children's play. In drawing upon Vygotsky's [(). Play and its role in the mental development of the child. Voprosy Psikhologii, 12, 62-76] conception of play as the leading motive of pre-school-aged children, the naturalistic study reported in this paper seeks to address this gap. Video observations of children (3.3-5.8 years) and teachers digitally engaged across five sites during free-play time (413.8 h of video observations) were studied using a cultural-historical conception of play [Vygotsky, L. S. (2005). Appendix: from the notes of L.S Vygotsky for lectures on the psychology of preschool children. Journal of Russian and East European Psychology, 43, 90-97]. The findings show that digital animation in a free-play program where role-play is featured can enrich the play opportunities of children which in turn promote play complexity and increase social and cognitive demands on children, which together can be theorized as a positive force for children's development. These developmental conditions emerged as a profile of five interrelated key digital practices and psychological characteristics, adding to our understandings of digital play.

Automatic classification of E-mail messages by message type

This article describes a system that automatically classifies E-mail messages in the HUMANIST electronic discussion group into one of four classes, Question, Response, Announcement, or Administrative. A total of 1,372 messages were analyzed. The automatic classification of a message was based on string matching between a message text and predefined string sets for each of the message types. The system's automated ability to accurately classify a message was compared against manually assigned codes. The Cohen's Kappa of .55 suggested that there was a statistical agreement between the automatic and manually assigned codes.

A graphical, self-organizing approach to classifying electronic meeting output

This article describes research in the application of a Kohonen Self-Organizing Map (SOM) to the problem of classification of electronic brainstorming output and an evaluation of the results. Electronic brainstorming is one of the most productive tools in the Electronic Meeting System called GroupSystems. A major step in group problem solving involves the classification of electronic brainstorming output into a manageable list of concepts, topics, or issues that can be further evaluated by the group. This step is problematic due to information overload and the cognitive demand of processing a large quantity of textual data. This research builds upon previous work in automating the meeting classification process using a Hopfield neural network. Evaluation of the Kohonen output comparing it with Hopfield and human expert output using the same set of data found that the Kohonen SOM performed as well as a human expert in representing term association in the meeting output and outperformed the Hopfield neural network algorithm. In addition, recall of consensus meeting concepts and topics using the Kohonen algorithm was equivalent to that of the human expert. However, precision of the Kohonen results was poor, The graphical representation of textual data produced by the Kohonen SOM suggests many opportunities for improving information organization of textual information. Increasing uses of electronic mail, computer-based bulletin board systems, and world-wide web services present unique challenges and opportunities for a system-aided classification approach. This research has shown that the Kohonen SOM may be used to automatically create ''a picture that can represent a thousand (or more) words.''
