Feasibility and Acceptability of Smartphones and Wearable Devices as an Intervention Tool for College-Aged African American Females in an Experimental Physical Activity Study

Objective: The current study examined the feasibility and acceptability of using the commercially available Jawbone UP accelerometer and associated smartphone application, or "app," to promote physical activity and sleep among college-aged African American females. Methods: Data were drawn from a larger randomized controlled trial, and focused on a subsample of college-aged African American females (n = 28) who were randomly assigned to receive a Jawbone UP accelerometer. A mixed-methodological research design was employed using data triangulation from quantitative data on usage, satisfaction, physical activity, and sleep patterns, which was coupled with qualitative data collected through focus groups. Results: At six weeks, retention (78.5%) and adherence (61.9%) to the smartphone app were high. Overall, 95.5% of the participants reported finding the UP Band helpful and the majority of participants agreed to strongly agreed that the physical activity (90.5%) and sleep (95.5%) features influenced awareness of such health behaviors. Qualitative data supported both the feasibility and acceptability with five main themes: ease of use, product design, self-awareness, physical activity and sleep motivation, and social desirability. Conclusion: After using the UP Band, participants in this study reported increased awareness of both their physical activity and sleep patterns. As such, the present study supports wearable technology and smartphone apps as viable and feasible interventions to promote health behaviors among college-aged African American females.

Smartphone Magnification Attachment: Microscope or Magnifying Glass

Today smartphones and tablets do not merely pervade our daily life, but also play a major role in STEM education in general, and in experimental investigations in particular. Enabling teachers and students to make use of these new techniques in physics lessons requires supplying capable and affordable applications. Our article presents the improvement of a low-cost technique turning smartphones into powerful magnifying glasses or microscopes. Adding only a 3D-printed clip attached to the smartphone’s camera and inserting a small glass bead in this clip enables smartphones to take pictures with up to 780x magnification (see Fig. 1). In addition, the construction of the smartphone attachments helps to explain and examine the differences between magnifying glasses and microscopes, and shows that the widespread term “smartphone microscope” for this technique is inaccurate from a physics educational perspective.

Mobile apps for reflection in learning: A design research in K-12 education

This study takes a design-based research approach to explore how applications designed for mobile devices could support reflection in learning in K-12 education. Use of mobile devices is increasing in schools. Most of the educational apps support single-person use of interactive learning materials, simulations and learning games. Apps designed to correspond to collaborative learning paradigms, such as collaborative progressive inquiry or project-based learning, are scarce. In these pedagogical approaches, reflection plays an important role. This paper presents a design-based research study of mobile device apps, ReFlex and TeamUp, that are specifically designed for use in student-centred and collaborative school learning, in which continuous reflection is an important part of the learning process. The design of the apps has relied on earlier research on digital tools for reflection and research about mobile devices in classroom learning. The design of the apps was accomplished as part of the qualitative design-based research conducted with a total of 165 teachers in 13 European countries. As a characteristic for a design-based research, the results of the study are twofold: practical and theoretical. The apps designed, ReFlex and TeamUp, are practical results of the qualitative research carried out in schools with teachers and students to understand the design challenges and opportunities in schools, to renew their pedagogical practices and to take new tools in use. To understand better the capacity of the apps to facilitate reflection, we analysed the apps in light of earlier studies concerning the levels of reflection that digital tools may support and categorisations of affordances that mobile device apps may provide for classroom learning. Our research indicates that there is potential for fostering the practice of reflection in classroom learning through the use of apps for audio-visual recordings.

Using computer-assisted assessment heuristics for usability evaluations

Teaching practices within educational institutions have evolved through the increased adoption of technology to deliver the curriculum and the use of computers for assessment purposes. For educational technologists, there is a vast array of commercial computer applications available for the delivery of objective tests, and in some instances, organisations have opted to develop bespoke systems to meet their individual pedagogical requirements. However, there is very little research published on the usability of these systems and on the possible usability problems that could ultimately affect users' learning or users' marks in summative tests. This paper focuses on the effectiveness of the heuristic evaluation method for the evaluation of computer-assisted assessment (CAA) systems and proposes a set of CAA heuristics for evaluating assessment tools. The results of these tests show that, with little training, novice evaluators can effectively perform an evaluation and could, using this heuristic set, identify genuine usability problems within the assessment tool. Therefore, educational technologists or software developers could use the new CAA heuristic set to aid their procurement or inform their design decisions.

A modern Galileo tale

The year 2014 marked the four-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of Galileo's birth, making it the perfect occasion to present and illustrate a GeoGebra applet which reproduces some of Galileo's celebrated experiments on the uniformly accelerated motion, as reported on in 'Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences'. Our applet is inexpensive, makes up for the lack of a fully-fledged physics lab and can be used as an accompanying activity in an (open) online course. The version we present allows for an 'empirical' test of three of the most relevant theorems in the third day of Galileo's Discourses. By three different experimental setups, students can see a ball roll down a slope, take measures and perform data analysis, following Galileo's footsteps. The applet is made freely available on the internet, so it can be downloaded and modified to cater for different students' needs. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Discovering the gas laws and understanding the kinetic theory of gases with an iPad app

Carrying out classroom experiments that demonstrate Boyle's law and Gay-Lussac's law can be challenging. Even if we are able to conduct classroom experiments using pressure gauges and syringes, the results of these experiments do little to illuminate the kinetic theory of gases. However, molecular dynamics simulations that run on computers allow us to visualise the behaviour of individual particles and to link this behaviour to the bulk properties of the gas e.g. its pressure and temperature. In this article, I describe how to carry out 'computer experiments' using a commercial molecular dynamics iPad app called Atoms in Motion [1]. Using the app, I show how to obtain data from simulations that demonstrate Boyle's law and Gay-Lussac's law, and hence also the combined gas law. © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Augmenting Classroom Practices With QR Codes

The use of mobile devices in the language classroom can help accomplish innumerable learning objectives, yet many teachers regard smartphones and tablets as obstacles to lesson goals. However, as portable technology continues to infiltrate classroom boundaries, it is becoming increasingly clear that educators should find ways to take advantage of mobile devices' enormous educative potential. Quick response (QR) codes, a type of matrix barcode, offer a simple solution to educators' concerns. By creating these scannable codes, educators allow students to quickly and easily engage with relevant online materials, including videos, podcasts, images, and more. In doing so, the separation between the classroom and the "real world" is blurred, and students become more accountable for their own learning by applying their language skills to a wide variety of English stimuli using their personal devices. After reviewing the benefits of mobile assisted language use (MALU), this article introduces practical resources for creating and scanning QR codes and outlines a multi-part lesson that incorporates QR codes. The article also presents a variety of successful, class-room-tested ideas for integrating QR codes into collaborative and communicative lessons.

The Reisman Diagnostic Creativity Assessment (RDCA) is a free online self-report creativity assessment that provides immediate feedback to the user and is diagnostic, rather than predictive, with the focus on making the user aware of creative strengths and weaknesses. Several engineering and teacher education studies have included the RDCA over a period of 3 years to refine the document items as a result of factor and statistical analyses. We acknowledge the advantages and disadvantages of self-report instruments and question the traditional use of reliability as a psychometric measure for self-report assessments. Many tools and techniques for enhancing creative factors identified by the RDCA are included.
