Fry method enables rapid estimate of finite strain from deformed aggregates such as clastic grains, fossil colonies, oolitic or pisolitic aggregates, prophyroblastic minerals or phenocrysts. It has an advantage over the other methods of finite strain analysis in its very quality of enabling rapid estimation with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Details of the software to prepare a plot using Fry method are outlined. This program has an advantage over other computer based programs on the world wide web in its aesthetic getup, small size, user friendliness and a help file. A computer program was developed in a Basic (Applesoft) version for generating up to five isopotential curves from field potentials recorded in nervous structures. Voltages are fed according to a cartesian coordinate system, and an area is delineated each four points in which a certain number of intermediate voltage points are calculated, according to the required resolution. The calculated values are compared to those prefixed for each curve and, if similar, their coordinates are stored in corresponding bidimensional matrixes. A special subroutine was designed for constructing an isometric tridimensional perspective of the isopotential curve ensemble. The reliability of this program was tested in the localization of sensory representation areas on the neocortex of the South American armadillo (Chaetophractus vellerosus) studied by evoked potential mapping following visual, auditory and somatosensory stimuli. The isopotential curves traced permitted a quantitative evaluation of the cortical activated areas, and from their topographical distribution, relative unresponsive zones could be inferred where only inconspicuous responses were obtained. It is concluded that the present program provides a reliable and fast method for studying the evoked potential''s spatial distribution over the entire neocortex. In addition, it can be extended to the study of curves or contours which connect equivalent values pertaining to biophysical magnitude other than voltage data.

The commercial software program HLA SequiTyper (Amersham Pharmacia Biotech), designed originally for human leukocyte antigen typing, was adapted for rapid typing of classical swine fever (CSF) virus isolates. The program compares new sequence data with those stored in a database file and calculates the most probable assignment. For generating the CSF virus sequence database, 150 bp of the 5' nontranslated genomic region (5'-NTR) from 88 German classical swine fever virus isolates from outbreaks between 1984 and 1997 were solid-phase sequenced directly after RT-PCR amplification. Sequence alignments showed that they all belonged to the previously defined genetic group 2. Within this group, six different subgroups could be distinguished, and were designated according to the geographic location where they are either still endemic or where they appeared most commonly. The advantage of using the HLA SequiTyper program is that it reads directly the sequence files as generated by the ALF sequencer (Amersham Pharmacia Biotech), making any manipulations unnecessary. In addition, a constant quality control of the raw sequence data can be achieved, as more than one sequence from the same isolate can be evaluated at once. A Microsoft Windows-compatible computer program, referred to as "Permeation Calculator," was developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to automate and standardize permeation testing data analysis. The program imports the data file collected during a permeation test and calculates relevant permeation parameters within a few seconds, based on a series of algorithms, strategies, and automated decision-making processes. It allows calculations of all the permeation parameters related to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F 739, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 6529, and ASTMD6978 standards, including standardized breakthrough time, normalized breakthrough time, breakthrough detection time, steady-state permeation rate, cumulative permeation mass at a given elapsed time, and elapsed time at a given cumulative permeation mass for either a closed-loop or an open-loop permeation test. For open-loop permeation testing, the software also allows changing sampling flow rate and allows calculations of average permeation rate and maximum permeation rate to see if the rates ever reach the threshold maximum for decision making. On completion, the software displays all the permeation parameters together with relevant information and the permeation curve as a report file in Microsoft Excel and text file formats. This software helps industrial hygienists and researchers to avoid labor intensive hand calculations of the permeation parameters. The software also prevents experimenter bias, thus ensuring identical permeation parameters will be obtained from a given permeation testing data file. The Permeation Calculator is available either on the NIOSH website or on CD by request.

Statistically sound comparisons of natural and constructed wetlands are complicated by variability between and within wetlands. This paper demonstrates the use of a SAS(R) program that estimates sampling effort and allocates that effort among number of wetlands, number of stations within wetlands, and number of samples to be collected at each station. Estimates are based upon variances known from pre-existing data, desired statistical power and critical effect, and project budget. The program is used to generate a sampling design for comparison of chironomid populations of natural and constructed freshwater herbaceous wetlands in central Florida.

The conceptual phase of a helicopter design includes comparison of configurations which will meet the specified performance requirements. To perform this comparison, the designer must have the proper tools at hand. This thesis presents an interactive computer program for the conceptual design of tandem rotor helicopters. It is intended to complement the existing single rotor helicopter design program written for the Helicopter Design course, AE-4306, taught at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. This program manages the myriad of interrelated parameters by prompting for input, providing the opportunity for changes, and displaying the results. This relieves the (student) designer of the tedious calculations and bookkeeping, thus allowing time for a more thorough analysis of the design.

A PC-based computer program for quality assessment (QAS) of results obtained by neutron activation analysis (NAA) is described. program QAS is designed for the quality assurance system based on a routine use of certified reference materials (CRMs) with similar matrix composition as the samples analyzed together with each sample batch. The results obtained for CRMs samples are then compared with certified (true) values and with the results obtained for particular CRM in previous analysis runs. Five various tests are applied to check the quality of NAA results (for CRM and, consequently, for real samples) obtained for a particular analysis run. Control charts for elemental concentrations found in CRM and ranges of results for duplicate aliquots of CRM are displayed to visualize possible discrepancies. The program accepts files transported from a gamma-ray spectrometric system ND 683 (based on a PDP 11 computer), extracts and stores reference material results, and prepares a work spreadsheet for each set of results to avoid typist and other kinds of errors.

The LAGRAN method of Rocci and Jusko for determining the area of plasma concentration curves has been implemented in a user-friendly form. Drug concentration versus time data may be entered using the keyboard or imported in the form of simple text files from spreadsheets or other software. The MSDOS program allows prompt graphic observation of the data. The effect of selecting different fitting modes for each segment of the curve may be viewed interactively using this graphic display. Pharmacokinetic parameters that are provided by the program include mean residence time, variance of the residence time, plasma clearance, and steady-state volume of distribution.
