Data on genetic diversity and differentiation, as well as kinship between individuals, are important for the conservation of animal and plant genetic resources. Often genetic assignment is part of law enforcement of protected endangered species. The software GDA-NT 2021 is a new, freely available user-friendly Windows program that can be used to compute various measures of genetic diversity and population genetic differentiation. It further allows genetic assignment of individuals to populations and enables the calculation of kinship-coefficients and genetic distances among pairs of individuals within populations. GDA-NT 2021 specifically computes the alternative measures for population differentiation D-j and the standardized F-ST of Hedrick. It has more options to compute exclusion-probabilities in assignment tests, enables self-assignment tests for variable groups of individuals, and allows for information on geographic positions to be accounted for while using permutation tests to assess statistical significance.

A computer program which enables detection of segmental abnormalities of the left ventricular contraction was developed using the principles of Leighton et al. [Circulation 50 (1974) 121–127]. A film projector, a digitizer a graphic display and a mini-computer are used. The end-diastolic (ED) and end-systolic (ES) left ventricular silhouettes are traced from 30° right anterior oblique cineangiograms projected on a screen of the film projector. The program determines semi-automatically both apexes and longitudinal axes of the left ventricle. Lines [( N − 1) ≤ 60] are drawn perpendicular to longitudinal axes, dividing longitudinal axes into equal N segments, respectively. These perpendicular lines are extended to intersect ED and ES silhouettes at 2( N − 1) points, respectively. The distances along each of 2( N − 1) hemiaxes are defined as short axes [S-ED i and S-ES i , i = 1 ∼ 2( N − 1)]. Segmental wall contractions are expressed as a percentage of the distance from S-ED i to S-ED i , and displayed as a graph with normal values (mean ± 2 SD). The presence and extent of segmental contraction abnormalities can be evaluated quantitatively by observing a percentage of segmental wall contractions. This program greatly facilitates a correct diagnosis in clinical use.

The interpretation pediatric electrocardiograms (ECGs) is complicated because of the strong age-dependency of the diagnostic criteria. We wanted to develop and evaluate a computer program for the interpretation of pediatric 12-lead ECGs. Continuous age-dependent normal limits were established based on ECGs from 1,912 healthy Dutch children. Additionally, a reference interpretation was obtained for 1,718 ECGs recorded at the Sophia Children's Hospital. The total set of ECGs was divided in a training set of 1076 ECGs and a test set of 642 ECGs. All ECGs were recorded at a sampling rate of 1,200 Hz. Based on the normal limits and the training set, diagnostic rules were formalized in an iterative process by using expert interviews and automatic rule induction. The resultant rules were evaluated on the test set. The performance of the program, on our study population, appears to justify its use in a clinical setting. Preferably, the program should also be evaluated in other clinical centers.

We have designed a single program, for use with a direct-reading spectrometer, to include the following functions for a variety of sample types, excitation methods, and analytical concentration ranges: (1) Background correction by linear relation of background at analytical lines to background at other wavelengths; (2) Use of background, internal standard and analytical channels interchangeably; (3) Use of either standard dilution or variable composition standards; (4) Standard curve fitting by least squares regression. Curves as high as 6th order can be fitted in order to utilize shoulder and toe areas of these analytical curves without distorting straight-line segments.

In this study, a new computer program developed to determine the colour properties of natural stone products is introduced. The program can scan any digitalised picture of natural stone products and produce several statistical results such as mean, variance, minimum and maximum colour values, skewness and kurtosis values of the colour histogram, energy, contrast, entropy and homogeneity values of the data which may be used to classify the typology and/or quality of natural stone products. As a case study, Orosei limestones (Sardegna, Italy) were used. There are several typologies of Orosei limestones such as Nuvolato (Cloudy), Venato chiaro (Light Veined), Venato medio (Medium Veined), Venato scuro (Dark Veined), Perlato chiaro (Light Pearled), Perlato medio (Medium Pearled) and Perlato scuro (Dark Pearled). Considers the use of computer programs for analysis and evaluation of data from field observations on the conditions of earth dams. These programs are currently under development. They all, however, have the same structure. The paper describes how the programs should be developed for handling remotely installed instrumentation. A software package has been developed which can be used for any earth dam with little modification. Appropriate database organisation is required. Similar programs can also be developed for concrete dams.
