The Nuts and Bolts section of our Journal (mirrored on the ICCNS society web site), is meant to provide a very practical way to share useful information, that goes beyond the scope of cell signaling and basic CCN protein biology. Considering the number of requests we have had for information related to protection of Intellectual Property (IP), I am pleased to initiate what will be a series of articles that will focus on various IP topics. The inaugural topic is the protection of computer programs. Some colleagues may wonder how and why the patentability of computer programs is a topic of interest for scientists working on CCN proteins... As a matter of fact, to assist us in analyzing the potential involvement of CCN3 in human genetic diseases, we considered developing a computer program designed to analyze large amounts of data. Sharing the concepts and the computer program raised concerns regarding IP and protection of the software that we would handle. We believe that many colleagues have encountered similar problems. This article provides a short focus on computer program patentability. It is aimed to provide basic legal information, and to help our readers in understanding the process. It is not intended to replace IP counselors or technology transfer departments. Future articles will address other practical aspects of IP protection.

Analysis of the time-dependent changes in displacements, internal forces, and reactions at the supports in continuous reinforced concrete structures cast, prestressed, and loaded at different stages is frequently needed in design to satisfy the serviceability requirements. The time-dependent parameters considered in the analysis are creep and shrinkage of concrete, relaxation of prestressed steel, sequence of construction, and changes in structural system and support conditions. A procedure of analysis is presented using conventional linear analysis computer programs. The analysis procedure is explained through examples to demonstrate its simplicity and applicability.

A hybrid technique combining the charge simulation and boundary element method has been employed to solve the problem in question. In this model the influence of tower frameworks and of the apparatus construction is taken into account. The basic boundary integral equations are presented and the computer program is briefly described. Selected numerical results concerning a 400 kV outdoor substation are given. The numerical technique and the computer program can be a useful aid for designers of electric power objects as well as for environmental protection authorities. In the near future the program will be applied in a commercial software package for the electric and magnetic-field computation near HV installations.

We develop and compare three different methods of phase retrieval from series of image measurements obtained at different defocus values. The first approach is an approximate solution to the transport of intensity equation (TIE) based on Fourier transforms. The second is an exact solution of the TIE, using multigrid methods. Lastly an iterative approach, using the free space propagator between image planes, is discussed. The iterative scheme is robust in the presence of discontinuities in the phase, unlike those methods based on solution of the TIE. The performance of the different methods in the presence of noise is discussed. Application of these methods to a set of experimental images taken using X-ray imaging is investigated. A computer program which can reproduce the simulations and analyse experimental image data is briefly discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
