A computer program that automatically classifies and clusters structural fragments extracted from mining the Cambridge Structural Database is described. The methodology is based on cluster analysis and multivariate data processing of distance matrix information describing the extracted fragments. Coupled with the calculations is a set of visualization tools that enable the user to view and verify the proposed classification scheme, and further explore it in varying levels of detail. Two examples are presented: the first is based on a simple difluoroalkene fragment and the second, more complex, on a chiral vicinal dialcohol, R-1(OH) CHCH( OH) R-2.

Drilling bit optimization is one of the key concepts in drilling engineering. It is considered as one of the economical factors in an overall well budget. computers are strictly used as decision-making systems in the optimization calculations. Formation parameters are easily processed according to drilling bit selection criteria by the help of computer programs. Although the computer program is an interface by which the user makes the computer do some jobs, the database is another important part of this decision-making systems. Data is stored and can be modified in the database. Also, necessary calculations can be accomplished by the database so that results of these calculations and data can be reached by the computer programs. In this study, a database holding field data is designed and a computer program calculating necessary parameters and related excel file holding output are prepared. Although mostly lowest cost per foot is preferred and there isn't an absolute method for choosing optimum drill bit, this design can be helpful in the selection period.

Swarm intelligence deals with the behavior of natural or artificial swarms. Swarms are systems that consist of many individuals that are organized and coordinated by principles of decentralized control, indirect communication, and self-organization. Examples of natural swarms are social insect colonies, flocks of birds, schools of fish, or herds of land animals. Examples of artificial swarms include groups of robots, intelligent mobile devices that can communicate with each other, or virtual swarms in form of a computer program. An interesting phenomenon of swarms is that collective swarm behavior can emerge on a global scale even when all individuals have only a restricted view of the system and interactions between individuals and their environment occur only on a local scale. Examples for such collective behavior are the nest building of ants and termites or the coordinated movement of a fish school in reaction to the occurrence of prey. In this article we focus on the optimization methods that have been developed in the field of swarm intelligence.

A feedforward internal model control (IMC) structure for controlling and maintaining the outlet charging temperature of a thermal energy storage (TES) system of a solar cooker is presented. The TES system consists of a packed pebble bed in thermal contact with a heat transfer oil contained in a storage tank. An electrical hot plate simulates the collector/concentrator which heats up the oil circulating in a hollow copper spiral coil thus charging the storage. A model for the collector/concentrator system is developed to enable simulation of the feedforward IMC structure. Using a Simulink block model, the simulation results reveal that a feedforward IMC structure performs better than a feedforward structure. The feedforward IMC structure is tested experimentally and the performance of the control structure is acceptable within a few degrees of the set temperatures. Experimental results are also compared with the simulation results. The simulated responses are found to relate closely to the experimental ones and any discrepancies between the two are discussed. Furthermore, the feedforward IMC structure is also compared experimentally with a combined feedforward and PID feedback structure. Results of the comparison indicate that the feedforward IMC structure performs better than the combined feedforward and PID feedback structure. The thermal profile of the storage during the charging experiment with the feedforward IMC structure is also presented and the results obtained from the storage profile indicate that the storage tank is thermally stratified. A computer program, QtUCP, has been developed based on several well-established algorithms using GCC 4.0 and Qt (R) 4.0 (Open Source Edition) under Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r0. it can determine the unit-cell parameters from an electron diffraction tilt series obtained from both double-tilt and rotation-tilt holders. In this approach, two or more primitive cells of the reciprocal lattice are determined from experimental data, in the meantime, the measurement errors of the tilt angles are checked and minimized. Subsequently, the derived primitive cells are converted into the reduced form and then transformed into the reduced direct primitive cell. Finally all the patterns are indexed and the least-squares refinement is employed to obtain the optimized results of the lattice parameters. Finally, two examples are given to show the application of the program, one is based on the experiment, the other is from the simulation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a model to predict the influence of fire induced restraints on the fire resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is presented. The three stages, associated with the fire growth, thermal and structural analysis, for the calculation of fire resistance of the RC beams are explained. A simplified approach to account for spalling under fire conditions is incorporated into the model. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparing the predictions from the computer program with results from full-scale fire resistance tests. The program is used to conduct two case studies to investigate the influence of both the rotational and the axial restraint on the fire response of the RC beams. Through these case studies, it is shown that the restraint, both rotational and axial, has significant influence on the fire resistance of the RC beams. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An ActiveX component, QrtzGeotherm, to calculate temperature and vapor fraction in a geothermal reservoir using quartz Solubility geothermometry was written in Visual Basic 6.0. Four quartz solubility equations along the liquid-vapor saturation curve: (i) a quadratic equation of 1/T and pressure, (ii) a linear equation relating logSiO(2) to the inverse of absolute temperature (T), (iii) a polynomial of T including logarithmic terms and (iv) temperature as a polynomial of SiO(2) including logarithmic terms are programmed. The QrtzGeotherm has input parameters: (j) HRes-the reservoir enthalpy (kj/kg), (ii) SiO2TD-silica concentration in total discharge (ppm), (iii) GeoEq-number of quartz solubility equation and (iv) TempGuess-a guess value of the reservoir temperature (degrees C). The reservoir enthalpy H(res) is assumed to be the same as the total discharge enthalpy H(R). The output parameters are (i) TempRes-reservoir temperature (degrees C) and (ii) VapRes-reservoir vapor fraction. The first step is to calculate the total discharge concentration of silica SiO2TD from the concentration of silica SiO2Col of separated water, sampled after N-separations of vapor and water. To use QrtzGeotherm in MS-Excel, three functions SiO2TD, GeoResTemp and GeoResVap for an N-stage separation of geothermal reservoir fluid are written in Visual Basic for Application (VBA). The computer program Hyp Delta H is a general-purpose Windows (R) application designed to derive equilibrium constants and/or formation enthalpies of complexes from solution calorimetric data. Least-squares minimization is used with the analytically determined derivatives. The efficacy of the program is demonstrated by application to the calculation of formation constants and enthalpies for the formation of AgPy+ and AgPy2+, and also of CH(3)HgGly(+), CH(3)HgGlyH and (CH3Hg)(2)Gly(2+). The results are compared with published data.
