The commercial software program HLA SequiTyper (Amersham Pharmacia Biotech), designed originally for human leukocyte antigen typing, was adapted for rapid typing of classical swine fever (CSF) virus isolates. The program compares new sequence data with those stored in a database file and calculates the most probable assignment. For generating the CSF virus sequence database, 150 bp of the 5' nontranslated genomic region (5'-NTR) from 88 German classical swine fever virus isolates from outbreaks between 1984 and 1997 were solid-phase sequenced directly after RT-PCR amplification. Sequence alignments showed that they all belonged to the previously defined genetic group 2. Within this group, six different subgroups could be distinguished, and were designated according to the geographic location where they are either still endemic or where they appeared most commonly. The advantage of using the HLA SequiTyper program is that it reads directly the sequence files as generated by the ALF sequencer (Amersham Pharmacia Biotech), making any manipulations unnecessary. In addition, a constant quality control of the raw sequence data can be achieved, as more than one sequence from the same isolate can be evaluated at once. Considers the use of computer programs for analysis and evaluation of data from field observations on the conditions of earth dams. These programs are currently under development. They all, however, have the same structure. The paper describes how the programs should be developed for handling remotely installed instrumentation. A software package has been developed which can be used for any earth dam with little modification. Appropriate database organisation is required. Similar programs can also be developed for concrete dams.

The objective of the present study is to evaluate the use of multimedia technology to simplify study of the brachial plexus. A combination of newly-rendered illustrations, animations, explanatory text, and a set of printable sample questions were combined into a program to provide a tutorial for the brachial plexus. One aspect of the program is an animation showing the development of the brachial plexus from its developmental origins that illustrates limb rotation and the resulting adult anatomy and dermatomal arrangement. The cross-platform program requires Quicktime 3.0 and is packaged on CD-ROM. Student evaluation of the program highlights its ease of use and intuitive navigation. User evaluation provides validation that the use of illustrations and animations is beneficial to user's understanding and retention of the material. Future plans involve incorporation of pathologic images in order to enhance the clinical relevance of the product.

The patentability of computer program has been discussed because of its deviation from the traditional definition of a patent. The relativities of computer programs to hardware are classified to measure the relative patentability of computer programs in this paper. It can be seen through the patentability analysis that the change in patentability basically follows an exponential function of the hardware character of the software, and the coefficient of an exponent part of the function is a damping factor that determines a patentability degree or trend. The basic patentability of computer programs is revealed when the damping factor value is 1, and a statistical patentability trend is derived. In drafting a patent specification, an appropriate expression of applicability and substantiality of computer programs is needed to acquire a patent right.

Information about the activity of the autonomic nervous system can be derived by analysis of keg. physiological signals, including ECG and blood pressure, on a beat-to-beat basis. Due to the large amount of data and mathematical processing involved, analysis by hand is prohibitive. The solution developed facilitates this procedure by performing the processing on a PC-based instrument incorporating existing medical equipment, a data acquisition board and a computer program to acquire and process the physiological signals. The automated virtual instrument was written using LabVIEW(C) as the main platform. The techniques implemented include impedance cardiography. time- and frequency-domain analysis, invasive and non-invasive baroreflex sensitivity assessment, and forearm blood flow measurements. The system was designed to study patients suffering vasovagal blackouts. where the changes that occur in the heart and circulation during an attack could increase understanding of the physiological processes that underlie their blackouts.

The wastewater treatment systems of a city in Turkey differ from each other depending on various factors such as population, economy, wastewater characteristics, topography, climatic conditions, urbanisation and cost of land. The construction and operation of the stabilisation ponds in all cities of Turkey are very easy due to the cheaper cost of the land and hot and mild climates. In this study, a computer model based on the Wehner-Wilhelm equation, developed by Thirumurthi, is used and for this application;first-order reaction rate (k(p)) and dimensionless dispersion coefficient (D) must be determined. Also, some parameters such as temperature, solar radiation, organic loading, altitude, turbidity. and hydraulic retention time are also required. The BOD, removal in the winter for 2m of pond depth was found 50%, and 52%, in the southern region (Sanliurfa), the northern region (Samsun), and the western region (Balikesir), respectively. No result could be given for the eastern region (Erzurum) in Winter, since wastewater in the pond was frozen. Generally, the BOD, removal was found to be 90-92% in the Summer for all provinces, and also 55-70% in the southern region, and 40-55% in the northern region in Winter during the 20 days of retention time when dimensionless dispersion coefficient and oxygenation factor are 0.2 and 1.5, respectively. The optimum effluent quality of the pond was obtained as 15-25 days of the retention time, 1-2 m of pond depth, and 0.2 dimensionless dispersion coefficient.

The technique of Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) can measure in situ fluxes of trace metals in sediments. Interpretation of these measurements requires a numerical model of trace metal reaction and transport in sediments. The DIFS (DGT Induced Fluxes in Sediments) model has permitted quantitative interpretation of DGT measurements in terms of fundamental kinetic and equilibrium resupply parameters. DIFS is here further refined and developed into a software tool which both simulates temporal and spatial changes in concentrations of trace metals in solid and solution phases in sediments during in situ DGT deployments, and estimates resupply parameters from experimental data. The basis of the DIFS model is a pair of linked parabolic PDEs describing dissolved and sorbed trace metal concentrations in the sediment and DGT device. These are solved by the Method of Lines using standard ODE solvers. The solutions are processed to obtain the DGT response. The use of the software, in particular the format of the text file containing input parameters, is described. Illustrative examples of the type of behaviour predicted for DGT by DIFS are provided.
