A computer program for calculating required amounts of reagents for making up chemical solutions is presented. The program also maintains a custom list of available reagents. use of the interactive mode guides the novice in entering the required information. The program is written in the BASIC programming language for IBM compatible microcomputers. It is available without cost from the author.

The program is a tool for accelerating analysis of tissue components (profiles) as seen in micrographs, including electron micrographs with immunoreactive substances labelled with gold particles. Required equipment is a computer with digitizer and printer. From coordinates sampled around the profiles, area, perimeter and form factor are calculated;particles in profiles, when wanted, are counted to obtain particle densities. MORFOREL permits basic statistical calculations on primary data or on composite expressions based on them. Expressions can be saved on disk and retrieved. Primary and calculated data are readily output in a format readable by common commercial packages.

The microcomputer is an invaluable aid in the management of diabetes mellitus because of its ability to manipulate, summarise, and produce graphical displays from blood glucose data in such a way that new trends, or the effects of changes in therapy, are more readily apparent to the clinician. Currently available software however, while adequate for most purposes, has not been written to cope with the unique problems presented by diabetic pregnancy in which large amounts of data are generated over short periods of time, insulin requirements may change rapidly, and blood glucose control must be extremely tight. We have produced a new program, GLUCOPAGE, specifically for use in the management of diabetic pregnancy. GLUCOPAGE operates in conjunction with the Ames Memory Glucometer, from which it can download data either directly or telemetrically via a modem into the host IBM PC or compatible microcomputer. Large amounts of data can be summarised in various tabular and graphical formats on screen or in printed form. A single A4-size printout, the Glucopage, provides tubular and graphical summaries of a full week''s blood glucose data. Copies of the Glucopage may conveniently be filed in the case notes, given to the patient or distributed to other medical staff.
An accurate numerical Laplace inversion algorithm is presented. In comparison with original multi-step inversion method, some improvements are made. The concrete Turbo Pascal routines are introduced.

We developed a simple and precise program for the on-line judgement of the sleep stages of four rats simultaneously for an unlimited period, using a commercially available general purpose signal processor (NEC-Sanei 7T17;32-bit, 5 MHz, 4 Mbyte, 1 Mbyte 1 floppy disc drive). EEG and EMG were recorded with an 8-channel polygraph (NEC-Sanei, System 280) through electrodes chronically implanted into the brain. The signals were A/D converted every ms and integrated for 2760 ms after full-wave rectification, and the subsequent 2240 ms was used for calculation and further analysis. All data were handled with this 5000 ms as the minimum unit. Then 3 sleep stages, i.e., waking, slow-wave sleep, and REM sleep, were determined by a template matching method from the relative amplitudes and durations of the integrated EEG, EMG and EMG surge data based on algorithms of standard visual amplitude analysis criteria for the sleep-stage classification. An agreement matrix was constructed between the data scored by the visual and by the automatic analysis, and the agreement value was satisfactory, although slight variability was seen in the REM sleep-stage determination. This result indicated that EEG and EMG data analysis is appropriate for researching the circadian rhythmic mechanism of the sleep-wake cycle.

A generalized interactive computer program (CNVSPI) is presented that enables the analyst to apply several methods for multicomponent analysis using conventional absorbance as well as orthogonal polynomials coefficients. The program performs the following : (i) stores data collected from spectrophotometer ,(II) processes data already stored in a file which include convolution with orthogonal polynomials, solving simultaneous linear equations and applying the least squares principle and (iii) displays data on screen, printer and plotter. Using that program multicomponent spectrophotometric methods have been applied to assay four component mixture in different matrices.

Measurements of intracellular and extracellular ion activities with ion-selective microelectrodes generally involve calibration of the electrodes in solutions of known composition and fitting of the calibration data with a theoretical expression. The Nicolsky equation is frequently used to describe the variation of electrode potential with primary ion activity in the presence of a constant amount of interference. In this report, we review the estimation of primary ion activities in calibration solutions and discuss the practical use of the Nicolsky equation. We describe a specialized computer program, developed in this laboratory, for routine input and editing of calibration data, fitting of data with the Nicolsky equation, and calculation of experimental ion activities from the fitted curve. Earlier versions of this program have proven helpful in several investigations in this and in other laboratories.

A user friendly interactive computer program, CIRDIC, is developed which calculates the molar ellipticity and molar circular dichroic absorption coefficients from the CD spectrum. This, in combination with LOTUS 1-2-3 spread sheet, will give the spectra of above parameters vs wavelength. The code is implemented in MicroSoft FORTRAN 77 which runs on any IBM compatible PC under MSDOS environment.

A microcomputer application has been designed to assist in the construction of pole figures using a digital universal microscope stage. The software monitors the stage orientation and switch settings in real time. The trend and plunge of the microscope axis is displayed on an equal area (Schmidt) stereonet in a user-defined reference frame. Data may be recorded relative to the sides of the petrographic slide as reference frame. Alternatively, the specimen's field orientation may be restored and orientations may be calculated relative to the north-east-down geographical reference frame. The computer calculates, records, and graphically displays pole orientations. Data for different minerals may be stored in separate files and data from several thin sections may be merged in a single pole figure. Output to a dot matrix or laser printer is supported.

Common heart arrhythmia monitors are limited to the electrical activity of the ventricles. Severe cardiac malfunctions exhibit typical defects of atrioventricular conduction which often can be efficiently treated with medicine or electrotherapy. The method described here enables the detection of complete atrioventricular blocks and may be used for the improvement of arrhythmia monitoring.
