A microcomputer program in BASIC for predicting percentage of occurrence of electroshock-induced convulsion in mice was designed. A formula published by the author to express the mathematical relationship among the drug dose, the time, and the biological response was used in this program. Analysis of the actual, and the computer-assisted predicted percentages of occurrence of convulsion has shown that the program is fairly accurate in expressing convulsion response of mice as a function of the voltage and the duration.

Earth-resistance measurement of large electrodes, carried out by the fall-of-potential method, can involve difficulties and errors. To eliminate these disadvantages, the authors have developed a systematic analysis of different grounding systems buried in nonhomogeneous soils. The analysis is made by using a computer program based both on Maxwell's subareas method and on the method of electric images; the soil is represented by a two-layer equivalent model with known parameters. This paper shows the computer program theory in full. Moreover, systematic analysis provides numerous curves allowing accurate measurements of the earth resistance of large grounding systems with often-used shape when the auxiliary current electrode is located near the grounding system under test. Finally, the authors show that the given curves can also be used for earth-resistance measurement of those systems whose shapes are different. In conclusion, this paper supports the contents of IEEE Standard 81-1983 and extends its application range.

The FORTRAN source code is given for a computer program that calculates the two-dimensional intensity distribution in convergent-beam transmission electron microdiffraction (CBED) patterns from perfect crystals. The program uses the eigenvalue or Bloch-ware method. It allows three-dimensional dynamical diffraction, and so includes all higher-order Laue zone effects without approximation. No symmetry reduction is included. The program accepts noncentrosymmetric or centrosymmetric crystal structures and allows absorption corrections to be included. It uses the “EISPACK” subroutines for the diagonalisation of a general complex matrix. Up to 100 CBED disks may be included. The code is also available via “Bitnet”.

A computer program written in Pascal for use on personal computers is described. The program performs curve fitting to a mathematical model suitable for in vitro dissolution data. The initial values for the parameters are calculated from the raw data. The time used by the program was tested with several datasets and found to be acceptable also with a minimum hardware configuration. The performance of the program was compared to the performance of a program for general non-linear regression running on a mainframe computer. There were only minor differences in the calculated parameters and standard deviations between the two systems.

A system comprising a suite of 4 computer programs has been developed for on-line rodent weight data collection and statistical analysis using an IBM personal computer. Data can be collected from up to 3 separate trials simultaneously, and can be stored for later statistical analysis. Mettler balances were used for the animal weighing. A Mettler current loop adapter and a multiplexer were used to interface the balances with the computer.

The INCA program converts Consort 30-generated fluorescence list mode data collected from Indo-1-stained cells to absolute intracellular calcium concentrations (nM Ca2+i). The calcium data are plotted vs. time, allowing the user to analyze the fractions of cells responding to a given stimulus. Converted files can be restored to disk after replacing FL1 and FL2 with time and calcium, respectively, for future analysis.
