A new technique for the optimisation of microwave transistor amplifiers has been developed, whereby the computer program removes components or adds new components and nodes to the circuit, in a systematic but apparently random manner, in order to approach specified performance targets. Although the assessment of a large number of possible alternative circuits consumes a large amount of computer time, two examples show that acceptable circuits are produced with very little operator interaction. The program optimises for gain, noise figure, input and output VSWR and stability. It is suitable for integrated circuit design. Examples are given of a single-stage amplifier with feedback and a two-stage amplifier with lossy matching networks but without feedback operating over the frequency band 8–12 GHz.

A computer program that will simultaneously solve five of the major intraocular lens (IOL) equations predicting the primary implant power required for emmetropia or ametropia is presented. The program can, alternatively, predict the degree of ametropia given the power of an IOL. The resultant predictions are analyzed usig weighted and unweighted statistics, predicting a mean and a standard deviation. the results are displayed in a table which lists the prediction and the percent deviation from the weighted mean for each equation. The program features automatic averaging of keratometer readings, ultrasound axial length corrections, and an algorithm for estimating postoperative anteiror chamber depth.

The bicinchoninic acid protein assay was scaled down to operate in the wells of microtiter plates. The total volume of the assay was reduced to 210 .mu.l and required only 10 .mu.l of sample per assay. The assay can be rapidly performed and then read with a plate reader. The analysis of the data was performed with a microcomputer interfaced with the reader. A computer program was developed to analyze the data from the bicinchoninic acid assay as well as the dye-binding assay at either the high or low protein concentration ranges. Based upon the absorbance values of the standards, the program computed a linear regression formula which was then used to calculate the concentrations of the sample proteins. A series of assays performed using bovine serum albumin, .alpha.-chymotrypsin and gamma globulin demonstrated that the scaled down bicinchoninic acid assay produced linear absorption versus concentration data with average correlation coefficients between 0.9967 and 0.9940 at the high and low concentration ranges, respectively. The protein-to-protein variation and proper selection of either protein assay based upon the presence of interfering materials was considered.

A computer program, written in BASIC, has been developed to assign treatments strictly at random to the wells of a microtiter plate. A hard copy is printed of the treatment numbers with their assigned wells, followed by an 8 .times. 12 matrix of the treatment numbers. When a microtiter plate is placed over the matrix these numbers may be viewed directly through the wells. A program listing is reproduced. The effects of randomization on within-place variation have been investigated and compared with two systematic methods of assignment.

The table is presented to assist the clinician in performing IOL power estimates and as an independent source for checking preoperative IOL power calculations. A new computer program is described which calculates titers and antibody concentrations from ELISA data. Optical densities are measured in 96-well microtiter plates using an automated colorimeter and simultaneously fed into a microcomputer. The data can then be arranged and printed in an 8 .times. 12 format corresponding to the format of a 96-well microtiter plate. The computer program can also compute the titers of samples if the samples are arranged and titrated in one of the suggested formats. In addition, the titers of unknown samples can be automatically compared with the titer of a standard to obtain concentrations. An ELISA designed to measure the concentration of murine antibodies to the cell wall polysaccharide extracted from Streptococcus pneumoniae was performed to document the use of the program.
