A single computer program, for use in especially highly precise and accurate applications of the Walsh atomic absorption method, is designed to allow an analyst the freedoms (1) to determine the concentrations of up to 11 elements in an unrestricted number of samples; (2) to use up to 40 differently named standards and/or series of standards simultaneously, with or without a dilution option; (3) to fit any standard curve and associate it with either one equation or two; (4) to make the equation of all or part of any standard curve a polynomial of either first or second degree; and (5) to have standard curve equation coefficients and/or coordinates of certain points on the standard curve printed out in easily readable form. The concentration of a given element of interest, in any sample, is treated as a variable with random properties. Up to 26 estimates of this concentration can be made, and, from them, the program computes the mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and both 95 and 99% confidence limits about the mean.

This dissertation is concerned with a discussion of various aspects of traffic assignment and the writing and development of a computer programme to investigate the effects of some of the factors influencing the solutions given by certain capacity restrained assignment techniques. A short review of the planning process is followed by a survey of modern traffic assignment processes with particular reference to capacity restrained methods, and a discussion of factors affecting these solutions. A detailed discussion of the assessment of the convergence of capacity restrained methods is included. programmes are written to allow the use of three different loading methods and three different speed/flow relationships in the investigation of the approach to a solution of three different capacity restrained methods as indicated by five different measures of convergence. Suggestions are made for the development of the programmes and areas in which they may be used for further research into the functioning of capacity restrained traffic assignment techniques.

The calculation of the transient currents, voltages, torques and speeds of a group of induction motors supplied from a common transformer, following switching operations or faults, is considered. The differential equations describing the system are numerically integrated, accounting for any discrete changes in the currents caused by the switching operations. The digital computer program is capable of dealing with all the possible sequences of symmetrical switching and fault conditions in a group of up to 10 motors and it incorporates the facility for automatically plotting the main results on an incremental graph plotter. The paper indicates the theoretical approach and describes the computer program.

Evaluation of motion characteristics, structural integrity, and stability of semisubmersible drilling vessels can be done in several ways. computer programs for predicting semisubmersible motions and for evaluating semisubmersible stability have been developed. Methods for calculating the range of heave values in regular and irregular waves, and for analyzing stresses in irregular seas are ***. This paper describes methods for evaluating and comparing motion characteristics, structural integrity, and stability of semisubmersible drilling vessels. A computer program for predicting semisubmersible motion is presented, along with evidence of its validity. The range of heave values calculated for nine different rig designs is shown for both regular and irregular waves. A method for analyzing stresses in irregular seas and a computer program for evaluating semisubmersible stability is *** Considerations. Any semisubmersible drilling vessel is necessarily a compromise between many design considerations. Not everyone will agree on the best compromise among conflicting requirements, as evidenced by the fact that semisubmersibles presently under construction or built since 1972 have at least 16 significantly different *** are some of these design considerations? A major operating consideration is that the vessel have minimum motion in waves to provide a good drilling platform. Another consideration is mobility, since platform. Another consideration is mobility, since semisubmersible drilling vessels are used primarily for exploratory drilling. Factors influencing mobility are the vessel's over-all towing resistance and whether the vessel is self-propelled or assisted by propulsion. Other design considerations include load-carrying capacity, maximum deck load, and storage capacities. These items influence the operating flexibility of the vessel and the frequency with which it must be resupplied. Some rigs have had ease of fabrication a

A combined radioimmunoassay for glucagon and insulin in biological fluids is presented. It is based on the use of 131I-glucagon and 125I-insulin tracers and a charcoal-dextran separation procedure. Standard curves, sample determinations and recovery studies gave comparable results whether in the combined or individual assay for glucagon and insulin. The combined assay, especially if supported by a decoding and calculating computer program, offers the advantages that it requires a smaller volume of the material to be sampled, is more economical and less timeconsuming.

A computer program is described for calculating the acoustic velocity and related field quantities for planar multilayer structures of arbitrary anisotropy and piezoelectricity. The solution method is based on a matrix approach wherein each layer is characterised by a transfer matrix relating the mechanical and electrical variables at the boundary planes. By choosing the system variables to be those quantities which must be continuous at material interfaces, formulating boundary conditions for planar multilayers is equivalent to cascading multipart networks. Thus, the transfer matrix across a multilayer is obtained by chain-multiplying the transfer matrices of successive layers. The chain-multiplication aspect, which is a fundamental consequence of this approach, guarantees that, irrespective of the number of layers, the setting of at most a 5×5 determinant to zero is all that is required to satisfy the boundary conditions. The program also calculates the mechanical and electrical field profiles as a function of depth, and metallic shorting planes can be located at any arbitrary location in the multilayer. The main program consists of four packages: a package for reading, initiating and preparing data; a package for generating the system matrices, evaluating transfer matrices, and setting up the boundary determinant for the required problem; a co-ordinate rotation package; and a mathematical package for carrying out complex eigenanalysis and function minimisation.

Ellipsometry is commonly employed to evaluate the thicknesses and refractive indices of thin films grown on silicon. To obviate the use of relatively inaccurate graphical techniques in the calculation of film parameters from ellipsometer readings, a computer program, which solves the appropriate equations iteratively, has been written. The program, in Fortran IV, which was developed, primarily, for interactive-mode operation, makes efficient use of computer core and time, and can handle measurements taken from transparent films, comprising up to 50 layers, grown from, or deposited on, silicon substrates.

An aspect of protein nutrition that has not been resolved in a satisfactory manner is the utilizable energy equivalence of proteins. The existing methods overestimate the utilizable energy of proteins. A more accurate method fo calculating the utilizable energy of proteins is to calculate the moles of adenosine triphosphate formed during the complete oxidation of a given amount of proteins. The moles of adenosine triphosphate formed can be calculated from knowledge of the amino acid composition and knowledge of the metabolic pathway for each amino acid. A computer program is described that provides the bookkeeping required for these calculations. The available energy of a protein is calculated in this computer-based method by adjusting the energy value of the proteins so that it is equivalent to that of carbohydrates and fats in providing the energy for adenosine triphosphate formation. The computer-based method was used to calculate the available energy of a group of proteins of known amino acid composition. The available energy varied from 3.02 keal/g for colagen to 3
