Traditional creativity-enhancement ideas and modern data handling by computing machines can be merged to create programs that make optimal suggestions to the designer. These suggestions are most useful during the design concept phase where a synthesis is attempted. The appropriate structuring of such programs is generally data- or problem-specific. From the study of specific applications general rules may emerge. This article demonstrates that approach with an application to the data contained in charts proposed by Boothroyd as guides to design for assembly.

The article provides information about evidence-based cost estimation for better quality of software. Accurate cost estimates are important in order to avoid the cost or quality death spiral. Software professionals resist the use of formal cost estimation methods because the mental methods they employ and the sequence of steps they use are closely related to reasoning approach. Cost estimation in computer software industry centers around parametric regression-based techniques such as COCOMO, PRICE-S, SEER-SEM, and SLIM. COSEEKMO, a work-bench for repeatable cost estimation experiment, can derive and evaluate numerous cost estimation tools.

ReMark is a fully automatic tool for clustering orthologs by combining a Recursive and a Markov clustering (MCL) algorithms. The ReMark detects and recursively clusters ortholog pairs through reciprocal BLAST best hits between multiple genomes running software program (***) in the first step. Then, it employs MCL algorithm to compute the clusters ( score matrices generated from the previous step) and refines the clusters by adjusting an inflation factor running software program (***). This method has two key features. One utilizes, to get more reliable results, the diagonal scores in the matrix of the initial ortholog clusters. Another clusters orthologs flexibly through being controlled naturally by MCL with a selected inflation factor. Users can therefore select the fitting state of orthologous protein clusters by regulating the inflation factor according to their research interests.

FOCUS is a number system and supporting software especially useful for microcomputer control and other signal processing applications. FOCUS has the wide ranging character of floating-point numbers with a uniformity of state distributions that give FOCUS approximately a fourfold accuracy advantage over an equal length floating-point system. FOCUS computations are typically five times faster than equal word length single precision fixed-point or integer arithmetic for a mixture of operations, comparable with hardware arithmetic in speed for many applications. Algorithms for 8-bit and two versions of 16-bit FOCUS are included. With FOCUS, an 8080A can perform the equivalent of over 20,000 18-bit floating-point additions, subtractions, multiplications, and divisions in one second, and store the results in 16-bit words. FOCUS is more than a theory, it is a completed system providing near hardware speed, 18-bit accuracy, floating-point range, and 8-bit cost.
