A five-year series of studies, which ended in 1982 and which was supported in part by NASA and in part by Burroughs Corporation, led to the systemdesign of a very large, very high-speed multiprocessor. This system was intended to solve large scientific problems, especially modeling problems such as those in computational aerodynamics. The performance objective was to sustain execution rates up to one billion floating-point operations per second with problems requiring 40 million words of main memory. The viability of this design depended on an in-depth understanding of the projected applications of the system. An overview of the project objectives and the resulting 128 processor design will be presented showing the local private memories available to each processor, the 64 million word shared memory, the dual-omega interconnection network, and the important programming concepts. During the design of the system, studies were conducted which determined the number of processors (a tradeoff with individual processor speed), the memory organization (program and data, private and shared), and the structure of the networks used to interconnect the processor and memory resources. These studies and the important application-related considerations are presented. Although this system was never constructed and tested, it was extensively simulated and the design was completed to sufficient detail to develop a reasonably accurate parts list and implementation plan.

This paper reports findings from an exploratory study investigating working notes created during encoding and external storage (EES) processes, by human search intermediates using a Boolean information retrieval (IR) system. EES processes have been an important area of research in educational contexts where students create and use notes to facilitate learning. In the context of interactive IR, encoding can be conceptualized as the process of creating working notes to help in the understanding and translating a user's information problem into a search strategy suitable for use with an IR system. External storage is the process of using working notes to facilitate interaction with IR systems. Analysis of 221 sets of working notes created by human search intermediaries revealed extensive use of EES processes and the creation of working notes of textual, numerical and graphical entities. Nearly 70% of recorded working notes were textual/numerical entities, nearly 30% were graphical entities and 0.73% were indiscernible. Segmentation devices were also used in 48% of the working notes. The creation of working notes during EES processes was a fundamental element within the mediated, interactive IR process. Implications for the design of IR interfaces to support users' EES processes and further research is discussed. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd

This article describes the design of a prototype multiauthor multimedia document production (MAMMDP) system. In particular, the article concentrates on how the system's tasks were analyzed and represented during the early stages of the design. The aim of the article is to relate our ideas and experiences from the analysis and design work, in the hope that some of them may prove useful to others concerned with MAMMDP. We believe that both the processes and the products of our analysis and design work can be informative about the development of MAMMDP systems.

The Alexandria Digital Library (ADL) is one of the six digital library projects funded by NSF, DARPA, and NASA. ADL's collection and services focus on information containing georeferences: maps, images, data sets, text, and other information sources with links to geographic locations. During this study period, three different user interfaces were developed and tested by user groups. User feedback was collected through various formal and informal approaches and the results fed back into the design and implementation cycle. This article describes the evolution of the ADL system and the effect of user evaluation on that evolution. ADL is an ongoing project;user feedback and evaluation plans for the remainder of the project are described.

The perinatal record system was introduced as an example of a summary system which is operational as a subsystem of a highly comprehensive hospital information system. Inclusion of such summary records in the hospital information system was very important;it provided a supporting system for the more intensive care of patients while at the same time allowing the automatic collection of certain items in the records. systematic accumulation of the summary records was also obtained through the operation of the hospital. The on-line segment of the summary system of this type should be so designed as to offer various utilities for supporting daily patient care. Any detailed analysis of the accumulated records could be done by a batch system of sufficient usefulness.

This paper describes the design, use and evaluation of a computer assisted learning package for first year university programming. The system, called CLEM, provides a resource rich, 'guided discovery' learning environment. It was developed by extending the CORE design approach, with a particular emphasis placed on enhanced interactivity and flexibility. CLEM was implemented using the hypertext tool, Guide, and delivered in a lab of 32 PCs running under Windows 3. It was used by over 200 students following four different course streams. The CAL system was the predominant method used by these students for learning Modula-2, the first year programming language. The students' reactions were assessed through observation, discussion and a formal questionnaire. The system was rated highly on ease of use, ease of learning and as a preferred method of learning. The main design features of the system were individually rated very highly. Performance on the programming module was compared with a baseline period prior to the introduction of the CAL system. Marked reductions in failure rate were achieved on the full time courses. The results provide strong support for the effectiveness of properly implemented computer assisted learning in higher education.

The advent of large area, low cost Multi-Chip Modules (MCM) will lead to a new class of optimal systemdesigns. This paper explores the early analysis of the impact of packaging technology on this design process. Our goal is to develop a suite of tools to evaluate computing system architectures under the constraints of various technologies.
