Energy efficiency of GPU architectures has emerged as an important aspect of computer system design. In this paper, we explore the energy benefits of reducing the GPU chip's voltage to the safe limit, i.e. V-min point. We perform such a study on several commercial off-the-shelf GPU cards. We find that there exists about 20% voltage guardband on those GPUs spanning two architectural generations, which, if "eliminated" completely, can result in up to 25% energy savings on one of the studied GPU cards. The exact improvement magnitude depends on the program's available guardband, because our measurement results unveil a program dependent Vmin behavior across the studied programs. We make fundamental observations about the program-dependent V-min behavior. We experimentally determine that the voltage noise has a larger impact on Vmin compared to the process and temperature variation, and the activities during the kernel execution cause large voltage droops. From these findings, we show how to use a kernel's microarchitectural performance counters to predict its V-min value accurately. The average and maximum prediction errors are 0.5% and 3%, respectively. The accurate V-min prediction opens up new possibilities of a cross-layer dynamic guardbanding scheme for GPUs, in which software predicts and manages the voltage guardband, while the functional correctness is ensured by a hardware safety net mechanism.

This study examines how design characteristics in digital simulation-based learning environments moderate self-efficacy and transfer of learning. Drawing on social cognitive theory and the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, the meta-analysis psychometrically cumulated k=15 studies of 25 years of research with a total sample size of N=2274 learners. The findings indicate that high levels of user control result in higher estimates of self-efficacy and transfer. Offering assessment feedback after rather than during training led to higher efficacy beliefs and transfer. Effects of social, narrative and multimedia characteristics were nonsignificant. Implications for computer-based instructional design and directions for future research associated with motivational outcomes in technology-enhanced learning are discussed.

The power envelope has become a major issue for the design of computer systems. One way of reducing energy consumption is to downscale the voltage of microprocessors. However, this does not come without costs. By decreasing the voltage, the likelihood of failures increases drastically and without mechanisms for reliability, the systems would not operate any more. For reliability we need (1) error detection and (2) error recovery mechanisms. We provide in this paper a first study investigating the combination of different error detection mechanisms with transactional memory, with the objective to improve energy efficiency. According to our evaluation, using reliability schemes combined with transactional memory for error recovery reduces energy by 54 % while providing a reliability level of 100 %.

On the development and assessment of a computer-based learning and assessment environment for the transition from lower to upper secondary chemistry education

This paper describes the development and assessment of a learning environment to support the transition of students from lower to upper secondary chemistry education in Germany. The learning environment centers on reviewing and expanding learners' prior chemistry knowledge in heterogeneous learning groups upon entering upper secondary education. The different learning materials are integrated in a computer-based learning environment, which offers a set of different learning stages which sequentially build upon each other. Another central element of the learning environment is an integrated test platform, which provides assessment and instant feedback to the students after completing each of the learning stages. This paper reports on the development of the learning environment by a group of teachers following the model of Participatory Action Research. Four schools and 81 students were involved in the implementation of the learning environment. Data sources used to reflect the learning environment were classroom observations, analysis of teacher feedback during monthly discussions, and a student survey. The study describes potential uses and reflects the benefits of using computer-based assessment within this learning environment from the viewpoint of the teachers and the students.

User Interface Preferences in the design of a Camera-Based Navigation and Wayfinding Aid

Introduction: Development of a sensing device that can provide a sufficient perceptual substrate for persons with visual impairments to orient themselves and travel confidently has been a persistent rehabilitation technology goal, with the user interface posing a significant challenge. In the study presented here, we enlist the advice and ideas of individuals who are blind with respect to this challenge, for an envisioned camera-based aid to navigation and wayfinding. Methods: We administered a short questionnaire about user preferences and needs for such a device to a sample of 10 well-educated, employed (or retired) visually impaired participants with light perception or less, who were familiar and comfortable with assistive technology. Generally, the items were rankings of relative priority. Results: Participants preferred speech as a communications medium for navigating the environment;preferred controlling the auditory display by querying the system rather than interacting via a menu or receiving a stream of continuous speech;and preferred providing input to the system through a keypad rather than through a voice recognition system. Architectural features such as doors and stairs were ranked the most important environmental objects to be located with such a device (over furniture, persons, personal items, and even text signs). Discussion: Our sample reported a desire for devices that can guide them to architectural features of their environment. They appear to prefer device interfaces that give them control, and would rather query a system than interact with a menu. They prefer unobtrusive input on a device via keypad rather than through voice recognition.

Social and mobile technologies offer users unprecedented opportunities for communicating, interacting, sharing, meaning-making, content and context generation. And, these affordances are in constant flux driven by a powerful interplay between technological innovation and emerging cultural practices. Significantly, also, they are starting to transcend the everyday life worlds of users and permeate the workplace and its practices. However, given the emergent nature of this area, the literature on the use of social and mobile technologies in workplace practices is still small. Indeed, social media are increasingly being accessed via mobile devices. Our main focus, therefore, here is on the question of what, if any, potential there is for the use of social media in informal, professional, work-based learning. The paper provides a critical overview of key issues from the literature on work-based learning, face-to-face and technology-supported, as well as social (mobile) networking services, with particular attention being paid to people tagging. It then introduces an initial typology of informal workplace learning in order to provide a frame for understanding social (mobile) network(ing) services in work-based learning. Finally, a case study (taken from the literature) of People Tagging tool use in digital social networks in the European Commission-funded MATURE project is used to illustrate aspects of our typology.
