We describe a completed project which, conceptually and technically, is a significant extension of IRUHS (Information Retrieval Using Heuristic Search) described in Findler (1979). SHRIF (system for Heuristic Retrieval of Information and Facts) is an information and fact retrieval system that emulates the natural strength and flexibility of humans in gathering new knowledge, grouping facts that belong together from some point of view, discovering and making use of partial similarities, handling uncertainties and incompletenesses, and making acceptable compromises when total consistency is not available. The system also exhibits user-friendliness in various ways. It receives new or modified data and queries in a high-level, English-like language. Users are not obligated to specify their information needs exactly and completely. They can express the different degrees of importance of the properties they expect the returned objects to have. They also declare their strength of belief that the named properties are indeed shared by the objects in question. The system can respond to less than complete or specific information requests. When the user is not quite satisfied with an answer, the input can be changed so that subsequent responses may be more suitable. A reasonably complex medical knowledge base was used in the development of the project.

Because of the rapid growth in the number of databases and online vendors/hosts, the task of selecting databases has become increasingly complicated, not only for end-users but also for information specialists. In addition, shortage of such experts and the cost of consultation, may act as hindrances for new users, thereby limiting the utilization of available services and discouraging many potential end-users. In this article, we discuss the design of an expert system called ONLINE-EXPERT. The system was built after acquiring knowledge from available human experts and printed documents such that users could obtain advice on the selection of appropriate databases. To further enhance the knowledge base, a multicriteria decision analysis technique called the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to construct a decision model that provided, within the framework of the expert system, the ranking of databases and hosts in order of preference.

Tutoring is assumed to be a conversational activity shared among the learner, the machine tutor and the educator/developer. The sort of student model that the machine should build, update and run simulations on, to help all three to be effective, is then derived. This derivation amounts to a demand for a new and different architecture for intelligent computer aided learning support systems. It is argued from cybernetic theory, and on the basis of empirical attribute-treatment results, that the student model must be a dynamic multi-level, and multi-personae model that also incorporates in rudimentary form the student's model of the teacher. Human tutors use multi-level models of learners' various characteristics to advantage. The promise of doing this in intelligent CAL systems is evaluated. Specific learner characteristics (including aspirations, expectations and cognitive style) are considered as elements of intelligent CAL student models. Since little is known yet about the moment-by-moment variability of many important learner characteristics, an intelligent CAL system is arguably a better laboratory for studying them. A formal connexion-matrix based language, and a fuzzy-logic based lesson planner, are advocated as a means for implementing and exploiting more adequate learner models in intelligent CAL systems.

HYPERTEXT/HYPERMEDIA systemS in the humanities have evolved significantly in the last decade and particularly since 1985. The writings of humanist scholars are important in understanding the use of this comparatively new medium for information access and use. Hypertext/hypermedia applications in the humanities show significant promise for the future but may also present libraries with special problems. This article provides historical background on hypertext/hypermedia;focuses on their use in the humanities;describes humanities projects that illustrate trends and techniques;discusses libraries' roles in hypertext/hypermedia humanities computing;and concludes with a description of challenges and opportunities as librarians implement such systems.

This article addresses several issues around successful integration of instructional science and computer science. It addresses issues of building computational models of tutoring and incorporating instructional principles into them. The first barrier to overcome in working toward this integration is development of principled programs in which cognitive principles about learning and teaching are realized at a level of granularity consistent with building computational models. Such cognitive studies would facilitate fine-grained modeling of learning and teaching. The second barrier to overcome is the gap between the two disciplines in terms of goals, motivations, literature, and even definitions of concepts. This situation suggests that effort should be concentrated on two areas: research on understanding basic principles behind learning and teaching, and the establishment of clearer lines of communication between instructional and computer scientists. This article addresses both these issues.

Since 1976 the authors have been involved in an evolving research and development program focusing on the application of computer-based simulation to diagnostic training in technical environments. Eight simulation-oriented training systems are used to the authors' understanding of and approach to student diagnosis. Each of the systems described capitalized on experimental and/or empirical findings from previous experiences. The article describes how design decisions were driven first by research findings and then by the reality of building effective computer-based training systems within the constraints of operational environments.

On-going technological advances may soon allow the development of an affordable, personal, easy-to-use, all-purpose information storage and retrieval technology similar to the Memex system described by Vannevar Bush. This paper proposes an updated design for Memex ('Memex-TV') based on high-capacity data networks, multimedia and new user interface technologies. It is argued that technology such as Memex-TV may well develop as a spin-off from advances in entertainment technology. Section 6, 'An evening with Memex-TV', illustrates the possible future interweaving of information retrieval and entertainment. Finally, it is argued that librarians need to consider entertainment technology's potential to influence the future of libraries more seriously.
