This volume contains 15 papers from research areas where Japanese theoretical computer science is particularly strong. Many are about logic, and its realization and applications to computer science; others concern synthesis, transformation and implementation of programming languages, and complexity and coding theory. Not coincidentally, all the authors are either former students or close colleagues of Satoru Takasu, professor and director at the Research Institute of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Kyoto. The purpose of this volume is to celebrate Professor Takasu's influence on theoretical computer science in Japan and worldwide by his research, his philosophy, and his advising of students. The breadth, depth and quality of the papers are characteristic of his interests and activities.

This book constitutes selected papers presented at the First International Workshop on Deceptive AI, DeceptECAI 2020, held in conjunction with the 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2020, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in August 2020, and Second International Workshop on Deceptive AI, DeceptAI 2021, held in conjunction with the 30th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, IJCAI 2021, in Montreal, Canada, in August 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic both conferences were held in a virtual mode.;The 12 papers presented were thoroughly reviewed and selected from the 16 submissions. They present recent developments in the growing area of research in the interface between deception and AI.

The collection of papers published in this book was initially presented at the Workshop on Software Factories and Ada, held on Capri, May 26-30, 1986. The subject of the book is software development environments. Software development is treated from three viewpoints: methodologies, language issues and mechanisms. Of particular interest are the discussions of automation of the development process and the formalization of software development specifications. Several new methodologies are described, many of which are available on the commercial market. New is in particular the formalization of the design and development process. Interesting ideas are presented on planning the design process and on supporting project management by formal tools. The reader will find a variety of interesting methodologies and mechanisms that are operational. The book is suitable for readers interested in knowing in which direction programming environment research is moving.

Next-generation distributed applications and systems are increasingly developed using middleware. This dependency poses hard R&D challenges, including - tency hiding, masking partial failure, information assurance and security, legacy integration, dynamic service partitioning and load balancing, and end-to-end quality of service speci?cation and enforcement. To address these challenges, researchers and practitioners must discover and validate techniques, patterns, and optimizations for middleware frameworks, multi-level distributed resource management, and adaptive and re?ective middleware architectures. Following the success of the past IFIP/ACM Middleware conferences (Lake District/UK, Palisades/USA, and Heidelberg/Germany) and building upon the success of past USENIX COOTS conferences, the Middleware 2003 conference is the premier international event for middleware research and technology. The scope of the conference is the design, implementation, deployment, and eval- tion of distributed system platforms, architectures, and applications for future computing and communication environments. This year, we had a record of 158 submissions, among which the top 25 - pers were selected for inclusion in the technical program of the conference. All papers were evaluated by at least three reviewers with respect to their origin- ity, technicalmerit, presentationquality, andrelevancetotheconferencethemes. The selected papers present the latest results and breakthroughs on middleware research in areas including peer-to-peer computing, publish-subscriber archit- tures, component- and Web-based middleware, mobile systems, and adaptive computing.

Since the first PARLE conference, PARLE '87, attracted more than 300 participants, it was considered a useful and successful forum and encouraged the organization of this second issue known as PARLE '89. The initiative for these conferences was taken by project 415 of ESPRIT (the European Strategic Programme for Research and Development in Information Technology of the Commission of the European Communities). Their scope covers central themes in the area of parallel architectures and languages, including such topics as concurrent, object-oriented, logic and functional programming; MIMD, dataflow, inference and reduction machines; design and verification of parallel systems; VLSI, WSI and RISC architectures; performance evaluation, memory management, systolic arrays, applications and special purpose architectures. The four invited lectures present the state of the art and advanced developments in major research areas related to the topics of the conference. Of the more than 150 submitted papers 45 were selected for presentation. Furthermore the program of PARLE '89 comprises presentations on the subprojects which together constitute ESPRIT project 415. Parallel architectures based on a variety of programming styles (object-oriented, logic, functional, dataflow) are represented in these overviews.
