The programming notation Cantor is a research tool used at Caltech for ongoing experiments with fine-grain message-passing concurrent computers called multicomputers. Cantor is an actor-based language, and its semantics conform to the actor model of computation, as described by Agha. Cantor represents one set of ideas about programming multicomputers. These ideas were tested by implementing Cantor on both concurrent and sequential computers and by writing numerous Cantor programs. Essential Cantor provided a minimal platform in which the most basic operations (such as iteration) were expressed explicitly by message passing. Some negative results of Essential Cantor are discussed.

This report presents the results of some measurements which were performed on the system ESOPE, over a series of conversational sessions. These results refer to memory and CPU utilization, the distribution of time among various types of activities, the management of internal user queues, and the behavior of users (virtual storage utilization, think time). The main interest of this work is to provide numerical estimates for these various quantities, which may be used in models of systems of the same kind as the one under study.

Cogela is a set of programs supporting the connection of two computers - a Laben 70 and a GE 115 - at the computing center of the Electronics Department of the Politecnico di Milano. Its design and development allowed the experimentation of a new method for describing colloquy protocols. Its realization took one man year. Since the GE 115 was in use as a remote terminal of the Univac 1108 computer of the Politecnico di Milano, the Univac 1108/1004 protocol under the Exec 8 Operating System has been the communication protocol chosen to connect the two computers. The interlocutor has been modelled as a particular class of variable structure sequential machines. The functioning of the interlocutor is described. The paper also contains a brief description of the protocol given in the form of a directed graph in which two nodes, representing messages, are connected by an edge if and only if one is the answer to the other.

The machine vision systems described in this paper are being successfully installed with and without robots in a variety of sorting and inspection tasks. Recent applications in part sortings, assembly verification, cosmetic inspection and non-contact measurement are described. Guidelines for uses of machine vision in manufacturing are presented, including a discussion of the limitations of currently available vision systems in terms of processing speed, resolution and image contrast.
