Emulation, the modification of one computer system so that it can execute programs originally written for another system, has become an increasingly important part of conversions since the mid-1960s. In this survey, emulation is placed in its technical and historical contexts. The emulation of central processor instructions and of input/output operations are considered,noting that I/O emulation usually presents more technical difficulties than does the central processor area. Integrated emulation, emulator performance, and other considerations in the use of an emulator are also discussed.

Collection of 26 papers by various authors. The purpose of the symposium was threefold: to facilitate the design and improvement of computing systems and software by the use of statistics;to facilitate the implementation of statistical methods by making the most efficient use of computation machinery;to enhance the combined uses of statistics and computation as adjuncts to the basic and applied sciences.
