Representation and comparison of shapes is a problem with many applications in computer vision and imaging, including object recognition and medical diagnosis. We will discuss some constructions from the theory of conformal mapping which provide ways to represent and compare planar shapes. It is a remarkable fact that conformal maps from the unit disk to a planar domain encode the geometry of the domain in useful and tangible ways. Two examples of the relationship between conformal mapping and geometry are provided by the medial axis and the boundary curvature of a planar domain. Both the medial axis and the boundary curvature can be used in applications to compare and describe shapes and both appear clearly in the conformal structure. Here we introduce some results demonstrating how conformal mapping encodes the geometry of a planar domain.

Simple representation of complex 3D data sets is a fundamental problem in computer vision. From a quality control perspective, it is crucial to use efficient and simple techniques do define a reference model for further recognition or comparison tasks. In this paper, we focus on reverse engineering 3D data sets by recovering rational supershapes to build an implicit function to represent mechanical parts. We derive existing techniques for superquadrics recovery to the supershapes and we adapt the concepts introduced for the ratioquadrics to introduce the rational supershapes. The main advantage of rational supershapes over standard supershapes is that the radius is now expressed as a rational fraction instead of sums and compositions of powers of sines and cosines, which allows simpler and faster computations during the optimization process. We present reconstruction results of complex 3D data sets that are represented by an implicit equation with a small number of parameters that can be used to build an error measure.

Combining different modalities for pattern recognition task is a very promising field. Basically, human always fuse information from different modalities to recognize object and perform inference, etc. Audio-Visual gender recognition is one of the most common task in human social communication. Human can identify the gender by facial appearance, by speech and also by body gait. Indeed, human gender recognition is a multi-modal data acquisition and processing procedure. However, computational multimodal gender recognition has not been extensively investigated in the literature. In this paper, speech and facial image are fused to perform a mutli-modal gender recognition for exploring the improvement of combining different modalities.

This paper presents a tangible mixed reality desktop that supports cresture-oriented interactions in 3D space. The system is based on computer vision techniques for hand and finger detection, without the need for attaching any devices to the user. The system consists of a pair of stereo cameras that point to a planar surface as the work bench. Using stereo triangulation, the 3D locations and directions of the user's fingers are detected and tracked in the space on and above the surface. Based on our 3D finger tracking technique, we design a few simple multi-finger gestural interactions for digital media management. The system provides a convenient and user-friendly way of manipulating virtual objects in 3D space and supports seamless interactions with physical objects.

Intel Performance Primitives (IPP) is a low-level signal and image processing library developed by Intel Corporation to optimize code on Intel processors. Open computer vision library (OpenCV) is a high-level library dedicated to computer vision tasks. This article describes the use of both libraries to build flexible and efficient signal and image processing applications.

Exact wave theories of specular reflectance from rough surfaces are computationally intractable thus motivating the practical need for geometric reflectance models which treat only the geometric ray nature of light reflection. The cornerstone of geometric reflectance modeling from rough surfaces in computer vision and computer graphics over the past two decades has been the Torrance-Sparrow model. This model has worked well as an intuitive description of rough surfaces as a collection of planar Fresnel reflectors called microfacets together with the concept of geometric attenuation for light which is obscured during reflection under an assumed rough surface geometry. Experimental data and analysis show that the current conceptualization of how specularly reflected light rays geometrically interact with rough surfaces needs to be seriously revised. The Torrance-Sparrow model while in qualitative agreement with specular reflection from rough surfaces is seen to be quantitatively inaccurate. Furthermore there are conceptual inconsistencies upon which derivation of this reflectance model is based. We show how significant quantitative improvement can be achieved for a geometric reflectance model by making some fundamental revisions to notions of microfacet probability distributions and geometric attenuation. Work is currently undergoing, to relate physical surface reconstructions from Atomic Force Microscope data to reflectance data from these same surfaces.

The system adopts advanced virtual instrument concept and technology, applies computer vision technology and digital image processing technology and realizes the monitoring of tested objects untouchably in real time. The paper adopts light reflection method to capture images, analyzes and compares several kinds of thresholding selection methods and finally adopts optimized one-dimensional maximum-entropy method. The method increases the computation speed of image segmentation. The system adopts closing operation with all structuring elements I to modify image distortion resulting in CCD's scanning granules in an interleaved mode without altering areas and shapes of granules. This system has such characteristics as strong function, quick response speed, high sensitivity, good stability, strong interference rejection and meets users' needs completely.

Image segmentation and its performance evaluation are very difficult but important problems in computer vision. A major challenge in segmentation evaluation comes from the fundamental conflict between generality and objectivity: For general-purpose segmentation, the ground truth and segmentation accuracy may not be well defined, while embedding the evaluation in a specific application, the evaluation results may not be extensible to other applications. We present a new benchmark to evaluate five different image segmentation methods according to their capability to separate a perceptually salient structure from the background with a relatively small number of segments. This way, we not only find a large variety of images that satisfy the requirement of good generality, but also construct ground-truth segmentations to achieve good objectivity. We also present a special strategy to address two important issues underlying this benchmark: (1) most image-segmentation methods are not developed to directly extract a single salient structure;(2) many real images have multiple salient structures. We apply this benchmark to evaluate and compare the performance of several state-of-the-art image segmentation methods, including the normalized-cut method, the watershed method, the efficient graph-based method, the mean-shift method, and the ratio-cut method. Matching geometric objects is a fundamental problem in computational geometry with applications in many other areas, such as computer vision, biology, and archaelog. In this paper, we study an important partial matching problem motivated from applications in several such areas. The input is in the form of sets of under-sampled slices of one (or more) unknown 3D objects, possibly generated by slicing planes of arbitrary orientations, the question we are interested in is whether it is 'possible, that two under-sampled sets have been taken from the same object. Alternatively, can we determine with 'certainty' that the given input samples cannot be from the same object. We present efficient algorithms for addressing these questions. Our algorithms are based on interesting geometric techniques and enables answering these queries either as plausible or a certain negative.
