Radial sinusoids (blurry spoke patterns) appear dramatically saturated toward the brighter regions. The saturation is not perceptually logarithmic but exhibits a hyperbolic (Naka-Rushton) compression behavior at normal indoor luminance levels. The object interpretation of the spoke patterns was not consistent with the default assumption of any unidirectional light source, but implied a diffuse illumination (as if the object were looming out of a fog). The depth interpretation was consistent with the hypothesis that the compressed brightness profile provided the neural signal for perceived shape, as an approximation to computing the diffuse Lambertian illumination function for this surface. The surface material of the images was perceived as non-Lambertian to varying degrees, ranging from a chalky matte to a lustrous metallic.

Ken will talk about his experiences as an end user of technology. Even moderate technological progress in the field of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence can be, often suprisingly, of great help to the Blind. An example is the providing of portable bar code scanners so that a blind person knows what he is buying and what color it is. In this age of microprocessors controlling everything, how can a blind person find out what his VCR is doing? Is there some technique that will allow a blind musician to convert print music into midi files to drive a synthesizer? Can computer vision help the blind cross a road including predictions of where oncoming traffic will be located? Can computer vision technology provide spoken description of scenes so a blind person can figure out where doors and entrances are located, and what the signage on the building says? He asks ''can computer vision help me flip a pancake?'' His challenge to those in the computer vision field is ''where can we go from here?''

In this paper, we propose a randomized algorithm to estimate the planar motion parameters of a finite closed set. By randomly searching points on two shapes measured at different times, we determine the centroids and translation of the planar shapes. Taking these centroids as reference points, the algorithm proceeds to determine the point-to- point correspondences by randomly searching three points on each shape that form congruent triangles. After the point correspondences have been determined, the rotation is estimated by solving the rigid motion equation.

Image indexing, namely, the problem of retrieving content information from images in response to queries. is a key problem underlying several operations in image databases. Indexing for object queries, in particular, is a difficult problem, as it requires localizing an unanticipated object in unsegmented images. This inevitably involves search, a computationally intensive operation when based entirely on image features. It is desirable to have efficient data structures that avoid the need for sequential search through images and their features for query localization, Conventional data structures used for database organization are not adequate for image indexing where the object query has to be located in images depicting changed imaging conditions that include pose changes and occlusions. In this paper: we explore the use of a geometric hash table as a suitable data structure for fast image indexing. The technique of geometric hashing has been used in computer vision for indexing a library of models to find candidate model objects for recognition in the isolated image region. Here, however, we use geometric hashing as a technique of fast query localization in unsegmented images of a database. Specifically we show that by using three consecutive features along a curve as basis points for affine invariance. a hash table can be constructed for images that is quadratic in the number of features. The resulting indexing method is also quadratic in the number of features. The query localization by geometric hashing is demonstrated for the problem of indexing of handwritten documents based on handwriting pattern queries.

A complex problem in computer vision systems is the incorrect description of objects due to dropouts along their contour. These dropouts can be caused by three factors: noise, or contrast problems; occluding shapes; perceived contour. A widely used shape representation technique is to represent the contour of an image as a sequence of parametric splines. In this paper we present one such technique, parametric spiral arcs, and argue that it displays properties desirable for vision systems and in particular, the spline-based contour representation aids contour completion. We present an algorithm which analyzes the dropout due to noise or occlusion and suggests likely connections, using information contained in the contour of a shape, and using perceptive properties of contour.

It has been shown that digital algebraic surfaces can be characterized by inequality conditions that follow from Helly's Theorem on convex sets. As a result, we can recognize digital algebraic surfaces by examining the validity of large collections of inequalities. These inequality conditions can be regarded as a natural extension of the chord property which has been proved by Rosenfeld for digital straight lines. In this paper we show that these inequalities can also be used to measure an absolute value distance. They can be used for example, to measure how far a digital set is from being digitally straight. Since the collection of measurements that must be performed to measure the absolute value distance can be very large, it makes sense to study the mathematical structure of such a collection. We show that it has the structure of a polynomial ideal. For digital straight lines this ideal is generated by a single polynomial.

A discrete biorthogonal wavelet transform is used to extract water regions from radar imagery. A family of discrete scaling vectors and wavelets are formulated by direct construction and used to create a multiresolution image pyramid from an input radar image. The scaling vectors and wavelets each have eight nonzero elements. A second set of vectors is used to perform the inverse transform and obtain an image. Various sections of the pyramid are used to reconstruct images which resemble the original image except at reduced resolution. In this way a small image `cube' is built up. Feature vectors are formed from the image cube such that the dimension of each feature vector is equal to the number of images in the cube. These feature vectors serve as input data to two standard clustering routines. The clustering routines are the minimax and the K-means. These clustering routines are used to place each pixel of the original image into one of two classes: water or land. Finally a simple routine is performed to try and correct any obviously misclassified pixels. This technique was applied to synthetic aperture radar images. It was found that when the image cube was calculated from sections of the wavelet transform high up in the pyramid the shadow regions on land blended in with the rest of the terrain but large water bodies could still be extracted intact. The results of applying this procedure to two synthetic aperture radar images are shown.

One of the central problems of computer vision is segmentation of images into salient features such as edges and surfaces. Different kinds of similarity criteria can be used to group related pixels together. One such criterion is the curvature of surfaces in an image of a multiobject scene that contains several objects with different shapes. In practice, however, curvature is difficult to calculate because small amount of noise can cause large amounts of errors in calculations of first and second derivatives. In this paper, we use a discrete approximation of Gaussian curvature that is efficient to compute. The approximation is used to segment the image into individual surfaces. Both synthetic and real images have been tested. Results appear quite encouraging.

A new encoding scheme for motion and approximate scene segmentation in video sequences is described. The proposed segmentation partitions the scene into variable size rectangles that can be encoded efficiently in a data structure known as `a slicing floorplan tree' in VLSI design. The motion in each rectangle is represented by size parameters. We describe experiments comparing the compactness of this encoding to motion encoding in MPEG-1, and its quality to motion estimates obtained by standard computer vision techniques. These experiments establish two facts. (1) The proposed representation is flexible enough to describe motion as accurately as the output produced by the best motion algorithms developed by computer vision researchers. (2) The proposed representation is much more compact than the representation of motion in MPEG-1.
