This paper describes instructional software and their utilization for the instruction of courses in the area of real-time control and operation of power systems. The objective of these courses is to study the real-time control functions as performed by modern energy control centers. The main topics addressed are: (1) data acquisition and estimation, (2) energy management/automatic generation control, and (3) security monitoring and control. Effective instruction of these topics is performed with the use of a number of interactive computer programs. These programs assist students in studying and understanding the concepts underlying the real-time operation of power systems. An overview of the courses and computer programs utilization procedures is provided. The focus of the paper is on security control concepts and description of the computeraided approach to enhance student comprehension. Typical homework assignments are described to illustrate the procedures. Student response to this approach is excellent.

Two types of CAI systems have been developed which make it possible to provide consistent education in plant operation for personnel from novice to expert levels and on to professionals like shift supervisors. The main features are summarized as follows. (1) Realization of an attractive feature, representing the fusion of education and amusement. A two layer structure was adopted, so operators can get systematic knowledge spontaneously, while enjoying the task. In the lower layer which is hidden from the operators, an education scenario was created to provide overall knowledge for the plant operators, such as system configurations and functions, and normal and emergency operation procedures. In the upper layer which is shown to operators, an attractive story with a game feeling was constructed corresponding to the education scenario. (2) Satisfaction of intrinsic motivation, representing instruction according to the learners' level. The student model is derived from a hierarchical function model which is a goal-oriented mental model of a plant operator. It is common to both the teaching course for presenting text knowledge of emergency procedures and the indicating course for actual plant behaviour and procedures using the plant simulator. The understanding level of each node (element of a function) in the model is evaluated by personal history conditions calculated from both the tutoring record of the node and the understanding level of the connecting nodes. This paper describes a single-phase transformer design suitable for classroom use. The scope of this design is limited to the specification for the core and coils of the transformer. Both shell and core configured transformers are designed in this paper. A computer program is developed for the purpose of illustrating the design procedure and demonstrating how it works. This paper describes the joint development of a computer aided instruction tool by professors from the University of Moscow, St. John's University and Baruch College, City University of New York. The system has the following distinguishing characteristics: integrates artificial intelligence and conventional computer technologies;was used in both Moscow and the United States with both Russian and English modules integrated;focuses on management decision making learning instead of technical skills learning;focuses integratively on both competitive market (free market) and economic (controlled market) analysis;is cross-culturally useful, since the same tool with modified introductions to accommodate language differences was used in both Russia and the United States;and provides the capability to accurately measure output - the impact of the system on a student's ability to answer questions correctly.

This thesis presents evidence that computer aided instruction (CAD is effective and can improve instructional efficiency when it is properly implemented. An overview of CAI in other colleges is presented as a source of ideas. The Department of Aeronautics of the Naval Postgraduate School is used as an example of where CAI can be applied. Procedures for the proper implementation of CAI are presented! and the summary includes specific recommendations for the Aeronautics Department.

Microcomputers have had a significant effect on almost all aspects of daily life. Interestingly, one area that has not been strongly affected is the area of teaching people how to make the chips used to build the computer. ICLAB is a software package that provides useful support for computer aided instruction in the area of microelectronics manufacturing. The program was written to provide students with a simulated manufacturing laboratory which would allow them to "manufacture" a simple chip. Students use the program to carry out all of the steps needed to produce a chip in the same manner that would be used in a real laboratory except they never have to leave the computer. Processes that are used in a working laboratory are simulated in detail so the student actually processes the chip. Operations such as mask design, oxidation, diffusion, ion implantation, lithography and etching are included in the simulation.

In recent years, with the rapid development of computer technology, the concept of computer aided instruction has been proposed and widely used. However, there's no researcher combines the comprehensive education with computer aided instruction. In this paper, after the introduction of the comprehensive education model and the research development of computeraided teaching, the demand of computer aided instruction system based on the comprehensive education model was analyzed, and the computer aided instruction system based on the comprehensive education model was constructed. Then, according to take the "physical optics" teaching in colleges and universities as an example, the empirical analysis on the effect of construction system was carried out. The results showed that the system constructed in this paper could promote students' comprehensive development.
