Results are presented in the areas of the use of development methodology and CASE-tools within software development and maintenance, from a survey investigation performed in Norwegian organizations. The results are based on responses from 52 Norwegian organizations. The investigation indicates a larger proportion of new systems being developed as customized systems in larger organizations. The presence of a comprehensive development methodology and the use of CASE-tools are also more prominent in larger organizations, which also use statistically significant less of their time on functional maintenance. Even so, the impact of CASE-tools on the information systems portfolios of Norwegian organizations is not yet large. A notably different perception of the benefits of CASE-technology was observed between users and non-users of CASE, even if it was not statistically significant.< >

We present an overview of a novel customer support system developed at QUIQ between 1999 and 2003. The application was perhaps the first systematic use of mass collaboration, which builds on the observation that large communities of users can be effectively leveraged to help each other, and to advance the interests of the community as a whole. In recent years, mass collaboration has been proposed for uses such as information integration and even program debugging, and shows much promise. In this paper, we outline the main ideas and technical challenges, and describe the QUIQ architecture. Technically, the main achievements include a novel DB-IR engine; a scalable notification engine for a rich class of user-specified alerts; a powerful access control mechanism with support for roles, dynamic groups, and field-level access control; and techniques for editing navigation hierarchies in dynamic sites.

A hydraulic actuated inverted pendulum with controller is designed, built, and tested. There are several objectives behind the device development. The first objective is to create an apparatus that can be used for class exercises for upper level control courses. Specifically, the device can be used to illustrate the complete control design process from plant modeling and identification to controller selection, design, and implementation, The next objective is to create a test bed for control theory investigations. The last objective is to choose an important means of actuation that does not receive significant coverage in the controls literature. We present details of the pendulum construction, its dynamic model, and controller design. The steps taken to model the plant and actuator together with the identification procedure present a useful example for control students regarding other aspects of control design which are not often covered in control texts.

The author applies an ecological perspective, focusing on the humans, tools, values, and objectives involved in publications activities to three case studies. These case studies provide insight into the development, integration, and remediation of information ecologies. Presents an approach based on the concept of "use case" to support the requirements engineering process. The proposed approach assists the analyst in producing dynamic object-oriented requirements specifications. The approach is "domain expert-oriented" in the sense that the domain expert can actively participate during the requirements acquisition activity by identifying and by describing the use cases. A formal technique using Petri nets is also proposed during the requirements acquisition activity in order to make the domain expert's requirements as complete and as unambiguous as possible. During the requirements conceptualization activity, the explanation of how some parts of dynamic requirements specifications can be produced from the formalized use cases is presented.

In this paper, we address multi-robot target monitoring and patrolling tasks via distributed feedback optimization. In particular, we design a distributed policy to steer a network of peer-to-peer robots toward a configuration minimizing a comprehensive index cost taking into account three different goals. First, the robots aim at disposing in a formation enclosing a given target. Second, each single robot aims at placing itself as close as possible to a specific point of interest. Third, the robots need to avoid dangerous locations modeled according to a suitable potential. To model this overall task, we resort to the formalism of aggregative feedback optimization, a recently emerged framework in which the goal is to minimize the sum of local functions each depending on both local (e.g., the position of a robot) and global variables (e.g., the barycenter of a team of robots) while concurrently taking into account also the robots’ nonlinear dynamics. We test our distributed strategy via realistic Webots simulations of a team of Crazyflie nano-quadrotors in a ROS 2 framework.

The database analyzer and predictor (DBAP) is a CASE (computer-aidedsoftwareengineering) tool supporting the design and tuning of IDMS (integrated data-management system) DB/DC applications. It is an interactive system, completely integrated with the IDMS online environment and providing the database designer with a comprehensive set of performance analysis models evaluating principal aspects of the database system performance. Close coupling of the workload analysis models with the computer system model provides a means for predicting the response-time behavior of the modeled database system. The performance-oriented database methodology, supported by a menu-driven user interface, guides the users through the database design, as well as existing database system tuning and capacity-planning projects.< >

The turn of the 21/sup st/ century brought with it demands for transforming the way the Department of Defense does business. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld challenged the DoD's senior leaders to nurture within the department a culture of creative and intelligent risk taking, where managers think less like bureaucrats and more like venture capitalists. An environment where managers foresee requirements rather than react to requirements; then field solutions quickly using tools such as innovative contracting strategies, system integrators, and industry partnering. The Air Force Chief of Staff has made transformation of the entire acquisition process, to include sustainment, a top priority for the service. He has acknowledged in his report to the 107/sup th/ Congress, 2/sup nd/ Session, that while the Air Force has a strong record of individual successes in acquisition reform, broad-based changes are still needed. He stressed that acquisition transformation is the number one goal of the Air Force's acquisition leadership.

The national electronics product stewardship initiative (NEPSI) was established by the US EPA to examine issues associated with electronics recycling, engage in discussions to build consensus among all stakeholder groups, and recommend a strategy for developing a national electronics recycling program. One of the outcomes of this effort was a set of guidelines describing a base level of service for collection and recycling which would apply across the country. Fundamental to the concept of base level of service is sustainability - the need to balance societal concerns for end-of-life product management with system cost effectiveness and environmentally-sound operational strategies. the sustainability target method (STM), developed in close collaboration between Lucent Bell Labs and the Multi-lifecycle engineering Research Center at NJIT, is used to evaluate various alternative collection scenarios. The key and unique feature of the STM is that it links the economic value of a system with its environmental impact by defining the relative indicator resource productivity (RP) for impact and the absolute indicator eco-efficiency (EE) for sustainability, thereby providing practical sustainability criteria for evaluation.

The paper addresses the problem of convergence time reduction for the line echo cancellation problem in the context of VoIP applications. Training signals can be used for this purpose. Intuitively speaking, any decorrelated signal, such as white noise, can be used as a training signal. C. Antweiler and H.-G. Symanzik (see Proc. ICASSP-1995, p.3031-4, 1995) have shown that a certain signal, called perfect sequence, can be such a training signal. The method for generating such signals is not easy to use, neither can it be extended to arbitrary lengths. The authors propose another candidate signal, called maximum length pseudo random binary sequence (mlPRBS), to be a perfect sequence. The conditions on such a signal are further analyzed and highlighted. It is shown that the proposed training signal fulfils such requirements. The claims are backed by simulation results. The simulation elements used are available in the public domain.
