Rare genetic diseases: update on diagnosis, treatment and online resources

Rare genetic diseases collectively impact a significant portion of the world's population. For many diseases there is limited information available, and clinicians can find difficulty in differentiating between clinically similar conditions. This leads to problems in genetic counseling and patient treatment. The biomedical market is affected because pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries do not see advantages in addressing rare disease treatments, or because the cost of the treatments is too high. By contrast, technological advances including DNA sequencing and analysis, together with computer aided tools and online resources, are allowing a more thorough understanding of rare disorders. Here, we discuss how the collection of various types of information together with the use of new technologies is facilitating diagnosis and, consequently, treatment of rare diseases.

Management of System Complexity in HAZOP for the Oil &Gas Industry

The paper gives an insight in how to deal with system complexity from a HAZOP study perspective. The research enlightens the importance of understanding system complexity in oil and gas industry and thereby gradually to change old-fashioned HAZOP industrial practice and improve safety performance in oil and gas industry. Methods and computer aided tools mentioned in the paper can improve HAZOP quality and efficiency with low manpower cost and support brainstorm section in HAZOP studies. The oil and gas industry can implement the method for HAZOP study on real plants to test its usefulness. © 2018

An analysis of present-day computer-aided tools for molecular systems engineering and the possibility of their use for developing the texture of new nanomaterials is performed. A wavelet-morphometric algorithm for a computer-aided analysis of the texture of nanomaterials using the original photomicrographs is proposed that includes the following main stages: the decomposition of the original photomicrographs into low-frequency and high-frequency components using a discrete wavelet transform, the calculation of energymechanical characteristics for the identified images of the texture elements of the high-frequency component, and further binary decomposition and calculation of morphometric parameters for the created images of energy-mechanical characteristics (parameters of texture elements). A system of energy-mechanical and morphometric parameters of the elements of the texture of nanocomposites is proposed that is based on the use of binary decomposition filtration of textural photomicrographs and the morphometric parameters of the identified images of clusters in the binarization sections.

Automatic detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) from speech is a basic step towards computer-aided tools supporting the diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Although several methods have been proposed, their applicability to real-world situations is still unclear. In particular, the effect of acoustic conditions is not well understood. In this paper, the effects on the accuracy of five different methods to detect PD from speech are evaluated. Among the considered conditions, background noise produces the worst effect, while dynamic compression or some speech codecs can even have a marginal positive impact. We also consider, for the first time in this context, the problem of mismatches, i.e., when train/test acoustic conditions are different, and observe a high negative impact on all considered methods. Overall, this study is a step forward in performing a continuous monitoring of the neurological state of the patients in non-controlled acoustic conditions.

Writing evidence documents for evaluation and certification processes according to the Common Criteria security standard is a very difficult, time-consuming and complex task Nowadays there are only a few, limited solutions based on templates and software tools which can efficiently support developers in preparing evaluation deliverables. This paper describes the results of an R&D project whose aim was to work out a computer-aided tool with built-in design patterns. Firstly, according to all security assurance requirements the design patterns in a paper version were prepared. Secondly, they were verified and validated by the developers in order to make some amendments and improvements. The conclusions were used as the source of functional requirements for a computer-aided tool. As a result a complete computer system was designed which implements the design patterns, knowledge base, evaluation methodology, and additional external supporting software. That solution facilitates and speeds up the development of the evidence documentation.

The paper concludes the author's works on the IT security development framework compliant with the Common Criteria standard. Two basic issues were solved to make this development easier and more effective: the entire development process was better formalized using the UML/OCL approach, and the set of specification means was extended (by defining enhanced generics) thus now the set covers all development stages and is more precise. Moreover, the set of relationships between specification elements was predefined to help developers solve typical security issues. The computer-aided tool, implementing this methodology, has the following elements built in: the simple risk analysis tool, design self- evaluator, reporting and documentation management facilities. The paper presents the volume of works, gives some examples, summarizes the results and gained experiences, and defines the plans of future works.

This paper presents the development of an educational computer-aided design tool for the shell and tube heat exchanger. The software integrates the thermohydraulics analysis based on Kern method with the mechanical design based on Tubular Exchanger Manufacturing Association (TEMA) Class "C" standard. The software allows the user to experiment with different design specifications and visualize the solutions in the form of performance data and engineering drawings. Technical drawings on the parts of the heat exchanger, like the shell, tube, front and rear header, tube sheet and baffle plate, are produced by the software to assist the user in appreciating issues relating to practical fabrication and costing. Through the correlation of the thermo-hydraulic performance, configurations and dimensions with respect to the technical specifications, it is hoped that the user could better appreciate the fundamentals of heat exchanger design. Material flow analysis and integration of watersheds and drain systems: II. Integration and solution strategies with application to ammonium management in Bahr El-Baqar drain system

The objective of this paper is to develop a systematic methodology for mass integration in drain systems and watersheds. Mass integration is a holistic approach to the tracking, transformation, and allocation of species and streams. The watershed and drain system is first discretized into reaches. The MFA model developed in part I of this work (Simulation and Application to Ammonium Management in Bahr El-Baqar Drain System) is used to describe the environmental phenomena that affect the fate and transport of targeted species and the operators that characterize the system inputs and outputs as they relate to the surroundings. Next, we develop an integration framework which encompasses sources, sinks, and interception technologies to aid in the development for nitrogen-management strategies. The simulation model was transformed into a synthesis model by introducing optimization variables and including models for the potential management strategies. The problem of minimizing negative environmental impact subject to technical, social, economic, and regulatory constraints was posed as a nonlinear optimization program whose solution identified and synthesized the most effective solution strategies. These mathematical models and management strategies were coded into a computer-aided tool using LINGO programming platform. The program can be readily modified to address a variety of cases. Tradeoffs and sensitivity analysis were established using the devised model. The devised framework was applied to an Egyptian drain system (Bahr El-Baqar) along with the outfall to Lake Manzala. The results of the case study provide solution strategies for nitrogen management along with their technical, economic, and environmental implications. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

The development and maintenance of a virtual reality (VR) system requires in-depth knowledge and understanding in many different disciplines, Three major features that distinguish VR systems are real-time performance while maintaining acceptable realism and presence, objects with two clearly distinct yet inter-related aspects like geometry/structure and function/behavior, and the still experimental nature of multi-modal interact ion design, Until now, little attention has been paid to methods and tools for the structured development of VR software that addresses these features. Many VR application development projects proceed by modeling needed objects on conventional CAD systems, then programming the system using simulation packages. Usually, these activities are carried out without much planning which may be acceptable for only small-scale or noncritical demonstration systems. However, for VR to be taken seriously as a media technology, a structural approach to developing VR applications is required for the construction of large-scale VR worlds, and this will undoubtedly involve and require complex resource management, abstractions for basic system/object functionalities and interaction tasks, and integration and easy plug-ins of different input and output methods. In this paper, we assembled a comprehensive structured methodology for building VR systems, called CLEVR (Concurrent and LEvel by Level Development of VR System), which combines several conventional and new concepts. For instance, we employ concepts such as the simultaneous consideration of form, function, and behavior, hierarchical modeling and top-down creation of LODs (levels of detail), incremental execution and performance tuning, user task and interaction modeling, and compositional reuse of VR objects.
