This study investigates the use of tire slip-angle feedback in the development of an adaptive control method for vehicle stability. The estimates for tire slip-angle variations are provided through a sensor fusion approach that integrates measurements from an intelligent tire system with results from a sliding mode observer. The algorithm yields to a control law in terms of an auxiliary steering angle to be added on the driver's input and a desired yaw moment implemented through a differential braking scheme. The proposed observers and control algorithms are evaluated using numerical analysis and tested under an evasive double lane change maneuver which shows successful stabilization and further improvement compared to a conventional algorithm based on yaw-rate feedback.

We propose the first online actor-critic scheme with adaptive basis to find a local optimal control policy for a Markov Decision Process (MDP) under the weighted discounted cost objective. We parameterize both the policy in the actor and the value function in the critic. The actor performs gradient search in the space of policy parameters using simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) gradient estimates. This gradient computation requires estimates of value function that are provided by the critic by minimizing a mean square Bellman error objective. In order to obtain good estimates of the value function, the critic adaptively tunes the basis functions (or the features) to obtain the best representation of the value function using gradient search in the Grassmanian of features. Our control algorithm makes use of multi-timescale stochastic approximation. The actor updates its parameters along the slowest time scale. The critic uses two time scales to estimate the value function. For any given feature value, our algorithm performs gradient search in the parameter space via a residual gradient scheme on the faster timescale and, on a medium timescale, performs gradient search in the Grassman manifold of features. We provide an outline of the proof of convergence of our control algorithm to a locally optimum policy. We show empirical results using our algorithm as well as a similar algorithm that uses temporal difference (TD) learning in place of the residual gradient scheme for the faster timescale updates.

In this article the operation of a novel, prototypical WDM-PON system with bi-directional data rates of up to 10.3 Gb/s is experimentally demonstrated. In the optical line terminal (OLT) a novel photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is deployed integrating an array of tunable lasers with Mach-Zehnder modulators and a star coupler. Wavelength control is achieved by a pilot-tone based scheme with a shared wavelength-locker (etalon). In the optical network unit (ONU) a novel Aluminium-containing laser is used, which has been specially designed for operation between 70deg C to 90deg C without requiring a thermo-electric cooler (TEC). For reduced cost and complexity the tunable laser is not equipped with an etalon. Instead it employs a generic contol algorithm, which is augmented by a pilot tone based scheme is used for centralized wavelength locking of all channels at the OLT.

This paper proposes a stochastic model of runway departures and a dynamic programming algorithm for their control at congested airports. Using a multi-variable state description that includes the capacity forecast, the runway system is modeled as a semi-Markov process. The paper then introduces a queuing system for modeling the controlled departure process that enables the efficient calculation of optimal pushback policies using decomposition techniques. The developed algorithm is simulated at Philadelphia International Airport, and compared to other potential control strategies including a threshold-policy. The algorithm is also shown to effectively adapt to changes in airport departure capacity, maintain runway utilization and efficiently manage congestion.

This work considers the tracking of the UAV (unmanned aviation vehicle) path on the basis of bearing-only observations including azimuth and elevation angles. The significance of this research becomes clear in the case when GPS either does not work at all or produce the high level of the measurement errors. It is assumed that either UAV's opto-electronic cameras or radar systems are able to capture the angular position of objects with known coordinates and to measure the azimuth and elevation angles of the sight line. Such measurements involve the real position of UAV in implicit form, and therefore some of nonlinear filters such as Extended Kalman filter (EKF) or others may be used in order to implement these measurements for UAV control. However, all such approximate nonlinear filters produce the estimations with unknown bias and quadratic errors. This peculiarity prevents the data fusion in more or less regular way. Meanwhile, there is well-known method of pseudomeasurements which reduces the estimation problem to the linear settings. In this article we develop the modified pseudomeasurement method without bias and with the possibility to evaluate the second moments of the UAV position errors which helps to realize the data fusion. On the basis of this filtering algorithm we develop the control algorithm for tracking of given reference path under external perturbation and noised angular measurements. Modelling examples show the nice performance of the control algorithm.

Adaptive controllers are often criticized for the lack of clear and easy verification procedures that relate design parameters to time domain performance especially during transients. For this reason it is a challenge to rigorously certify existing adaptive control algorithms. To that end, we propose a validation framework where stability and performance requirements are formulated in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities. This brings the advantage that adaptive controller design and verification can be analyzed and optimized via the solution of a convex optimization whose objective is to guarantee the evolution of the error components within an a-priori specified domain. This approach was cast to verify the performance of the recently introduced Frequency-limited adaptive control scheme. A detailed case study is presented to show the efficacy of the proposed verification architecture.

We present results from a week-long experimental evaluation of a scalable control algorithm for a commercial building heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. The experiments showed that the controller resulted in 37% energy savings without sacrificing indoor climate. In contrast to prior work that reports energy savings without a careful measure of the effect on indoor climate, we verify that the controller achieves the energy efficiency improvements without any adverse effect on the indoor climate compared to the building's baseline controller. This is established from measurements of a host of environmental variables and analysis of before-after occupant survey results. We present a complete system to retrofit existing buildings including the control algorithm and the supporting execution platform which includes the deployment of a wireless sensor network. Results show that there is a large variation in energy savings from zone to zone, which indicates that estimating energy savings potential of novel HVAC control systems is not trivial even from experiments-something that prior work with uniformly positive messages did not emphasize.

A performance comparison study for two proposed DC-bus voltage balancing algorithms is carried out, with a three-level NPC based permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive for the electric vehicle propulsion application. Both the control algorithms are able to keep the two DC-link capacitor voltage variation within a tolerance level with wider range of speed and torque variation of the load drive cycle. However, with the second proposed control strategy inverter total switching losses can be reduced considerably, compared to the first proposed strategy. Both the losses are then compared with a conventional two-level inverter, with a wider variation in switching frequency. Results show a significant reduction in total inverter losses at higher switching frequencies with three-level inverter. Both the two- and three-level inverter control strategies are developed using space-vector pulse width modulation (SV-PWM) scheme. The switching and conduction loss distribution in different switches and diodes for both the two- and three-level inverters are also studied. Finally the total voltage harmonic distortion (%THD_v), percentage torque ripple (%T_(rip)), and capacitor voltage fluctuation (%V_(caprip)) are also compared. Switching losses are calculated in a PLECS environment using data sheet parameters from Infineon and control logics are developed in MATLAB/Simulink. For this study a 110 kW surface-PMSM is considered. A scaled down prototype is built in laboratory for both the inverters and tested with a 6.0 kW surface-PMSM. Both the simulation and experimental results show satisfactory performance of the proposed system.

Control algorithms of networked multiagent systems are generally computed distributively without having a centralized entity monitoring the activity of agents;and therefore, adverse events such as attacks to the communication network and/or failure of agent-wise components can easily result in system instability and prohibit the accomplishment of system-level objectives. This paper studies resilient coordination of networked multiagent systems in the presence of misbehaving agents, i.e., agents that are subject to such adverse events. In particular, we consider a class of adverse conditions consisting of exogenous disturbances and interagent uncertainties, and present a distributed adaptive control architecture to retrieve the nominal networked multiagent system behavior. Departing from the existing relevant literature that make specific assumptions on the graph topology and/or the fraction of misbehaving agents, we show that the considered class of adverse conditions can be mitigated through a new adaptive control methodology that utilizes a local state emulator - even if all agents are misbehaving. A illustrative numerical example is provided to demonstrate the theoretical findings.

Recently, Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based Multi-Terminal DC (MTDC) transmission systems have gained more attention. Compared to current source converter technology, voltage source converters have several benefits including higher power quality, lower power transmission losses, and higher voltage capability. Flexibility in bidirectional power flow control is the main advantage of voltage source converters in large scale MTDC power transmission systems. However, VSC based MTDC transmission systems are vulnerable to DC side fault, and expensive DC circuit breakers are required to protect them against DC fault. This paper proposes a control method of a dc fault resilient voltage source converter that has ultra-fast electronic isolation capability following dc fault which can be protected against dc fault without using expensive DC circuit breakers. In this paper, the control scheme of MTDC grid based on droop control method with dead-band controller is proposed. The appropriate control algorithm of VSC based MTDC transmission system for DC fault operation and recovery after DC fault is also proposed. Finally, PSCAD simulation results are presented to evaluate the dynamic performance of VSC based MTDC grid with the proposed control algorithm under DC fault operating condition.
