In this paper, a cascaded model predictive control algorithm is applied to a grid connected voltage source inverter with LCL filter. The cascaded approach allows the use of one switched and one linear model, hence simplifying the implementation of the model predictive control algorithms. By using a detailed model of the inverter, active damping is achieved without any additional active damping algorithms. The control algorithm is verified by simulations in an ideal case and a realistic case where computational delays are considered.

This paper presents the average power balancing (APB) control method for the modular multilevel cascaded converter (MMCC) based on single-star bridge cells (SSBC) in the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) applications. The proposed APB control accomplishes both the reactive power injection and all the dc voltage balancing control at the same time. These functionalities also work even as grid voltage sag occurs. The control algorithm is verified with a 220-V 1kVA STATCOM based on MMCC-SSBC, and the test results show that all the dc voltages are still regulated at the commanded value even in the unbalanced grid voltages.

This article analyzes the mechanisms of TCP Veno algorithm with its existing problems, the reasons of packet transmission loss cannot be distinguished accurately, and proposes a novel end-to-end congestion control algorithm called TCP Eveno. The TCP Eveno improves the congestion status differentiation mechanism and congestion control mechanism, in order to distinguish the cause of the transmission loss more accurately, and achieve higher network resources utilization. Experiments have been conducted to compare Eveno algorithm with Reno and Veno algorithm in NS-2 simulation environment, when the packet loss rate is higher (0.01, 0.1), throughput of Eveno algorithm remains at a higher level than Veno and Reno.

A self-powered piezoelectric vibration control system is proposed and investigated for flexible structures in this paper. The objective of the system is to minimize the vibration of the flexible structure and at the same time to harvest energy for the self-powered control implementation. The whole system is comprised of four parts, i.e., flexible-beam mechanism, H_2 control algorithm, switch pre-charged inductor (SPCI) based control implementation, and energy storage unit. A cantilever beam with a tip mass, which is a typical type of flexible structures, is partly covered by a PZT film at the fixed end. The output feedback H_2 control algorithm produces desired values of control voltage. The circuit part uses a novel SPCI technique to realize the desired control voltage. The energy storage unit has both functions of accumulating energy and providing electricity needed in the control. Theoretical analysis and simulation are carried out. The simulation results show that the vibration of the cantilever beam can be effectively reduced under white-noise random excitation. It also indicates that the accumulated harvested energy is more than the consumed energy in the system.

Linear rolling and plain bearings are established and proven in Mechanical Engineering. However, for highest requirements concerning stiffness, dynamics and durability, as well as in dust-free and vacuum rooms, usage of magnetically levitated linear bearings can be economically worthwhile. Existent magnetic levitation systems are designed in greater dimensions, especially for purposes of passenger transportation like the German Transrapid and for usage in machine tools [2] [1]. Furthermore, they are mostly based on electromagnets, what is firstly attended by damping effects due to eddy currents and hysteresis losses and secondly attended by need for complex closed-loop control algorithms. In this paper an innovative magnetic levitation system for linear direct drives is presented, that is exclusively based on Lorentz forces and which is designed in dimensions for application in precision engineering systems [3]. Permanent magnets are arranged similar to a Halbach array within the guideway and thereby establish a magnetic field for the levitation and guidance coils. The comparatively low weight of the moving part and its lack of eddy currents allow for highest dynamics. Moreover, easy and efficient closed-loop algorithms can be implemented because of the linear correlation of Lorentz force and current. Finally, the performance of the levitation system is shown using the example of an existing prototype.

Model-free approaches such as Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Controllers are widely used in the control of Antilock Braking System (ABS) due to its strongly nonlinear structure and uncertainties involved. In this paper the design of a Spiking Neural Network (SNN) controller is considered for the regulation of the wheel slip value at its optimum value. For the training of the network a gradient descent based approach is followed. To formulate the generation of a new spike train from the incoming spikes, the Spike Response Model (SRM) is used. Delay coding is utilized to convert real numbers into spike times. The control algorithm is applied to a quarter vehicle model, and it is verified through simulations indicating fast convergence and good performance of the designed controller.

Current off-the-shelf underwater gliders (UGs) are large, heavy, expensive, and difficult to modify, both in hardware and software, which limits their use for multivehicle coordination experiments and deployment in high-risk environments. To address these challenges, the Nonlinear and Autonomous Systems Laboratory (NAS Lab) at Michigan Tech has designed two types of UGs for concept development, testing, and problem solving, and additionally, for scaffolding advanced interest and education in engineering. The first, a Glider for Underwater Presentation and Promoting Interest in Engineering (GUPPIE), nationally targets high school students and undergraduates to provide these students a UG platform for hands-on experience in concept development, testing, and problem solving. The second platform is a Glider for Autonomous Littoral Underwater Research (GALUR). At 10% of the cost of current models, the GALUR was designed to serve as a low cost multivehicle control testbed for disparate research groups who need to test and validate control algorithms. Still a highly-maneuverable UG, the GALUR allows researchers to address underwater communication issues by implementing control strategies for individual and multiple vehicle underwater data collection and mapping. Through the process of developing and testing these two UGs, the research team is ultimately working toward their long term goal of developing a fleet of low cost highly maneuverable underwater gliders. This paper details the challenges and milestones of the development process, and outlines the future research trajectory and goals.

Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) is a layer-based manufacturing process in which a laser and powdered metal are used to create a molten bead that is then traced along a path to create functional parts. The properties of the structure, including shape and material microstructure, are the result of complex interactions between the laser, the powder, the part substrate and other factors. Thus, a control algorithm is needed to accurately produce the designed part. However, feedback control of the process can create phase lag in the resulting control structure, which in turn can create dimensional instability. Additionally, the LMD process has been shown to change with part height or layer number. Taking these issues into account, a feed-forward, adaptive-type controller that changes with each fabricated layer, should be used. This paper first presents a dynamic model for the LMD process that incorporates the dependency of the process on part height. Then, an optimal Iterative Learning Process Control algorithm is presented to regulate the melt pool morphology of a deposited part using layer number as the iteration axis. A simulation study on the LMD process using the designed process controller shows that it is able to achieve good tracking performance.

This paper presents a disturbance observer for the sigma.7 haptic device. External torques on the haptic device links are observed to distinguish between intended user interaction and accidental collisions of the links. Collisions can be unintentional contact of the human operator, e.g. with his knee, other people accidentally getting in contact with the haptic device or objects falling on it. The observer is based on the dynamic model of the device and sensor measurements from the joint's position sensors and an integrated force/torque sensor. Is is implemented concurrently with a control algorithm that uses the force/torque sensor to effectively reduce the inertia and friction of the sigma.7. Furthermore, forces and torques applied on the grasping unit by the human operator are observed. Experiments are done with the sigma.7 customized for the German Aerospace Center (DLR) by Force Dimension.

the authors introduce a multifunctional control research test bench and its data management and interface system. They implemented a building monitoring, control, and interface system (MCIS) used for evaluation of complex building energy systems, for optimization of such energy systems and for carrying out control research experiments. In this paper they explain the MCIS' architecture and functionality, they present its research potential and three different control research use cases for building energy systems and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems;model-assisted control parameter fine tuning, model-based predictive control, and demonstration of adaptive control algorithms. The authors outline prerequisites for implementation, demonstration, and evaluation of new developed control algorithms and strategies. These prerequisites are fulfilled via system expansions providing a flexible demonstration bench.
