The paper presents an evolutionary optimization of a novel neurocontroller for the single phase sine-wave inverter. The controller is trained in online mode. The adaptation algorithm takes into account repetitiveness of the process to be controlled. The cost function evaluates performance of the controller over the whole period of the reference signal and the weights are updated only once per period of this signal. A model-free concept is implemented and hence no prior identification of the plant is needed. The controller employs the backpropagation algorithm for updating its weights in order to adapt to changing load conditions. The controller is nonlinear and the tuning procedure involves determining a good set of values for at least three parameters: a number of neurons, an error gain and an output gain. In our recent publication devoted to the development of the control algorithm we relied on guessing and checking at the tuning stage. Here the particle swarm optimizer (PSO) is used to find the optimal set of values for these parameters. The gradientless search algorithm enables a designer to work with any user-defined performance index that reflects desired system behavior. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated with the help of numerical experiments. The controller tuned by the PSO is capable to maintain a high-quality output voltage waveform in the presence of the periodic disturbance caused by nonlinear loads.

This study presents a derivative-free control algorithm called Proportional Integral Retarded (PIR) controller, and its application to second order linear systems. Using a frequency domain analysis, the stability map of the closed loop system is constructed;moreover, the exploration of the regions where stability switches occur leads to a tuning strategy assigning a triple real dominant root that corresponds to the maximum achievable exponential decay. The paper also presents an analysis of the main PIR controller properties. Finally, the proposed control law is compared to a proportional integral derivative controller using an experimental platform.

In this paper the applicability of the local voting protocol with nonvanishing step-size for decentralized stochastic network load balancing is studied under nonstationary problem formulation. The network system was considered to have a switched topology, and the control strategy uses noisy and delayed measurements. Nonvanishing (for example, constant) step-size allows to achieve the better convergence rate and copes with time-varying loads and productivities of agents (nodes). Conditions for achieving a suboptimal level of loading agents are established, and an estimate of the appropriate level of suboptimality is given depending on the step-size of the control algorithm, the structure of the averaged network and the statistical properties of noise and delays in measurements. Obtained theoretical results are illustrated by simulations of simultaneously processing of 10~6 tasks by 1024 agents with 2048 links. It is examined that the performance of the adaptive multiagent strategy with redistribution of tasks among "connected" neighbors is significantly better than the performance of the strategy without redistribution.

In this paper, we study cooperative control problems with a multi-UAV system expressed as a fourth-order system using a consensus algorithm. We first show that a linearized model of quadrotors is expressed as a fourth-order system, and then propose a formation control algorithm for the fourth-order system after formulating a problem. The proposed control law is based on a consensus algorithm and a leader-follower structure is also applied to the control law so that a leader can individually provide each of the quadrotors with information of their desired states. And then, we show that the proposed control algorithm can guarantee accurate formation keeping when fundamental assumptions about the network composed of the multiple UAVs are satisfied. Finally, the proposed approach is validated by some simulations.

This paper presents two control algorithms enabling a UAV to circumnavigate an unknown target using range and range rate (i.e., the derivative of range) measurements. Given a prescribed orbit radius, both control algorithms (i) tend to drive the UAV toward the tangent of prescribed orbit when the UAV is outside or on the orbit, and (ii) apply zero control input if the UAV is inside the desired orbit. The algorithms differ in that, the first algorithm is smooth and unsaturated while the second algorithm is non-smooth and saturated. By analyzing properties associated with the bearing angle of the UAV relative to the target and through proper design of Lyapunov functions, it is shown that both algorithms produce the desired orbit for an arbitrary initial state. Two examples are provided as a proof of concept.

Rate control is an important component of an end-to-end video communication system. Currently, there are several proposals for rate control in the upcoming High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, but none specifically for the multi-view extension of the standard. In this paper, we apply one of the HEVC single-view rate control schemes to the multi-view scenario, and propose two improvements. One improvement deals with Quantization Parameter (QP) initialization, and the other deals with interview Mean Absolute Difference (MAD) prediction. Experimental results demonstrate increased accuracy of rate control, reduced fluctuation of instantaneous bitrate, as well as a reduction in PSNR degradation compared to the existing rate control algorithm.

The massive growth in the usage of renewable, but fluctuating energy sources in connection with the energy turnaround calls for a similar growth of the integration of flexible loads. This seems to be a vital aspect to maintain the balance between production and consumption in the transportation grid as well as in the distribution grid at low voltage level. In this regard the question of how to achieve a flexible and cost efficient mass integration of low power demand facilities like domestic heat pumps is of special interest. The Center for Demand Side Integration at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg and Energie Baden-Wurttemberg (EnBW, the 3rd largest utility in Germany) developed and tested control algorithms in a simulation project in order to integrate a large number of distributed consumers (several 10.000) into an integrated system. The behaviour of the system was analysed with regard to load prediction, scheduling and shifting potentials.

A computer-aided algorithm to quantitatively predict lymph node status on MRI in rectal cancer

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the principle of supporting radiologists by using a computer algorithm to quantitatively analyse MRI morphological features used by radiologists to predict the presence or absence of metastatic disease in local lymph nodes in rectal cancer. Methods: A computer algorithm was developed to extract and quantify the following morphological features from MR images: chemical shift artefact;relative mean signal intensity;signal heterogeneity;and nodal size (volume or maximum diameter). Computed predictions on nodal involvement were generated using quantified features in isolation or in combinations. Accuracies of the predictions were assessed against a set of 43 lymph nodes, determined by radiologists as benign (20 nodes) or malignant (23 nodes). Results: Predictions using combinations of quantified features were more accurate than predictions using individual features (0.67-0.86 vs 0.58-0.77, respectively). The algorithm was more accurate when three-dimensional images were used (0.58-0.86) than when only middle image slices (two-dimensional) were used (0.47-0.72). Maximum node diameter was more accurate than node volume in representing the nodal size feature;combinations including maximum node diameter gave accuracies up to 0.91. Conclusion: We have developed a computer algorithm that can support radiologists by quantitatively analysing morphological features of lymph nodes on MRI in the context of rectal cancer nodal staging. We have shown that this algorithm can combine these quantitative indices to generate computed predictions of nodal status which closely match radiological assessment. This study provides support for the feasibility of computer-assisted reading in nodal staging, but requires further refinement and validation with larger data sets.

This paper presents a smooth robust controller for anti-angiogenic treatment of a tumor growth. The proposed control algorithm directly aims to drive the carrying capacity of the vascular support network to a desired trajectory that reduces overall tumor volume. For this aim, we present a closed-loop smooth robust controller that ensures the asymptotic tracking of a time-varying carrying capacity profile, despite the model uncertainties. A Lyapunov-based analysis approach is used to determine stability and performance results. Numerical simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance and feasibility of the proposed approach. Simulation studies also examine some practical issues regarding the clinical application of the proposed dosing algorithm. Finally, the paper provides some basics for real-time implementation of the overall system.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) aim to monitor and control complex real-world phenomena where the computational cost and real-time constraints could be a major challenge. Many-core hardware accelerators such as graphics processing units (GPUs) promise to enhancing computation, leveraging the data parallelism often found in real-world scenarios of CPS, but performance is limited by the overhead of the data transfer between the host and the device memory. For example, plasma control in the HBT-EP Tokamak device at Columbia University [11, 18] must execute the control algorithm in a few microseconds, but may take tens of microseconds to copy the data set between the host and the device memory. This paper presents a zero-copy I/O processing scheme that maps the I/O address space of the system to the virtual address space of the compute device, allowing sensors and actuators to transfer data to and from the compute device directly. Experiments using the plasma control system show a 33% reduction in computational cost, and microbenchmarks with more generic matrix operations show a 34% reduction, while in both cases, effective data throughput remains at least as good as the current best performers.
