Concurrent partially parallel syndrome computation reduces complexity but incurs increased error rates due to the hard decision flipping (HDF) problem. Proposed is a low-complexity iteration control algorithm (LC-ICA) that eliminates BER degradation. The HDF rate is also used to terminate undecodable blocks to further save iterations. The algorithm works over multiple code rates. The implementation results show that a six-rate LC-ICA requires only 23.32% of a single-rate fully-parallel syndrome hardware.

Joint channel and control information estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing depends strongly on the properties of the pilot sequences used, particularly the maximum difference, autocorrelation and cross-correlation coefficients. Presented is a practical algorithm for generating near-optimal sequences which can achieve excellent performance even in the low SNR region.

The design is reported of a digital pre-distortion (DPD) architecture based on the affine projection algorithm (AP) for RF power amplifiers operating in 900 MHz band. The linearity of the RF power amplifier with an OFDM signal is significantly improved by employing the proposed DPD system, where the look-up table method is used with nonlinear indexing. The proposed DPD with the AP algorithm is compared with that of the normalised least mean square algorithm, when applied to RF power amplifiers. Measurement shows improvement of the adjacent channel leakage ratio by 21 dB.

A novel classifier based on feature line, called the nearest feature centre (NFC) classifier, is proposed for face recognition. NFC uses the new metric, called the feature centre metric, which is different from the classical feature line metric of the nearest feature line (NFL). We consider illumination rendering with distributed control of a lighting system with an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). As low-cost microprocessors become standard components in LED drivers, distributing the computation of the control signals to individual LED drivers becomes attractive. Common distributed control algorithms require each individual controller to exchange information with all the others and process it. This incurs too large a communication and processing overhead for a low-cost local controller. In this Letter, we propose a distributed control algorithm for achieving global illumination rendering, wherein a controller only needs to communicate within a selected neighborhood. We present design criteria for defining the communication neighborhood and study its impact on rendering performance. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Numerical models produce output with a large number of variables, grid cells and time steps. The same applies to algorithms that produce gridded datasets from sparse or abundant raw data. Further use of the resulting data products has been challenging, especially for dissemination outside the institute of origin. Due to the gradually increasing size of data products, simply downloading copies of them is becoming impossible. A gradual transition from traditional download methods to web services is therefore observed. Web services allow for on-the-fly access to subsets of data that were hitherto considered as indivisible granules. Here we compare the most mature candidates to serve gridded data through the web: the Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) protocols. In the framework of the new Dutch National Model and Data Centre (***) a distributed data storage has been created by coupling OPeNDAP servers. A WCS service layer is provided for the same data. This allows us to compare OPeNDAP and WCS. Using several use cases, we compare the usability, performance and features of the two protocols.
