Internet advertising is a relatively new area where feedback control has become critically important for scalable optimization. But using feedback control presents new challenges, one being the discontinuous nature of the input-output relationship of the plant to control. In this paper we propose an actuator and control algorithm for the specific objective of scalable event rate control in online advertising. The actuator makes the input-output relationship of the plant effectively continuous and with adjustable plant gain, and the feedback controller implements a PI controller to regulate the campaign-level event rate to stay at or above a reference value.

Automated material handling systems are widely used in industry due to high throughputs and good process quality. In order to fully utilize their potential, these systems have to be custom-built, requiring individually created control software. The engineering process of the control software includes extensive manual programming, because a modular structure of the control algorithm with predefined modules is often not available. We describe one such modular control algorithm, based upon a two-layer architecture that separates the hardware control from the material flow control. Our modular control algorithm allows predefined modules for both the conveyor hardware and material flow elements to be created and then assembled in the needed configuration. As a result, the control software for a custom-built material handling system can be created by arranging predefined modules and setting their parameters, thus without manual programming. The proper functionality of our control algorithm is demonstrated by a simulation example using emulated hardware.

The paper presents a novel method of profiling the phase currents to minimize the torque ripple of a switched reluctance machine (SRM). The method is a combination of machine design and control algorithm. The minimization is accomplished through three steps. The first step is to design a machine which has symmetric torque characteristics with a maximum flat portion. The second step is to find the required current profile through simulation. The third step is fine tuning the profile through coupled simulation of the machine in the finite element and the dynamic controller in the Matlab/Simulink environments. The coupled simulation takes into consideration of the nonlinearities, electrical loss, magnetic loss, and mutual coupling.

Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) allow an opportunistic access of the unused spectrum to the unlicensed secondary users (SUs) provided that the interference generated by the SUs does not exceed the acceptable interference levels (predefined system threshold) to primary users (PUs). This paper deals with the maximization of transmission range of SUs considering Multi-hop cognitive radio cellular networks (CogCells), where SUs communicate with the Base Station(BS) over multiple hops. The SUs with low transmission power communicate with the BS through other secondary systems(SS) which act as a router to forward packets. The multi-hop transmissions generate more number of scheduled users as compared to Single-hop transmissions. In this paper, a greedy heuristic approximation algorithm (GHAA) is discussed for coverage optimization with the power control algorithms. The simulation results show that the number of scheduled users increase in multi-hop scenario with and without the application of power control algorithms.

This paper develops a nonlinear model predictive controller for constrained attitude maneuvering of spacecraft actuated by a reaction wheel assembly. In the proposed control algorithm, a Lie group variational integrator is implemented for the prediction of discrete-time dynamics. The model predictive control problem is defined on SO(3) and converted to an optimal control problem over the prediction horizon. The numerical solver for this optimal control problem is implemented. The developed solver utilizes the Indirect Single Shooting Method to find a solution to the necessary conditions for optimality. The control constraints and exclusion zone constraints are handled using a penalty function approach. Simulation results on a spacecraft model are presented.

This paper presents a hybrid AC/DC micro grid concept to directly integrate DC/AC renewable sources and loads to DC/AC links respectively. The hybrid grid eliminates multiple DC-AC-DC&AC-DC-AC conversions in an individual AC&DC grid. The hybrid grid increases system efficiency, eliminates the embedded AC/DC and DC/DC converters in various home, office and industry facilities which can reduce size and cost of those facilities. The basic architecture of the hybrid grid is introduced in this paper. Different operation modes of the hybrid grid are discussed. The various control algorithms are investigated and proposed to harness the maximum power from various renewable sources, to store energy surplus during low peak loads, to eliminate unbalance problem in AC link, to maintain voltage stability and smooth power transfer between AC and DC links under various generation and load conditions. A prototype of the hybrid grid under construction is presented. Some simulation and test results are presented.
